Chapter 241: Ke Zong and Dr. Jiang Are a Bit Ambiguous

~8 min read 1,597 words

After hanging up the phone, Ke Zhongyu wondered whether to tell Jiang Lai about this.

The matter had already progressed to the point of an imminent trial, and the Shen family's affairs had nothing to do with Jiang Lai.

Jiang Lai's life couldn't always revolve around the Shen family; the world is so big.

And even if he said it, Jiang Lai wouldn't feel relieved; she would only give a cold, indifferent "hmm."

Because Jiang Lai had never cared about any of the Shen family except Shen Xun.

In the end, Ke Zhongyu said nothing.

He returned to Yi Hao Bie Shu.

It was cold and desolate.

He had lived in this place for eight years and had never felt it so desolate before.

Ke Zhongyu's gaze unconsciously drifted toward the direction of Number Nine Villa.

He took off his shoes, removed his coat, but never loosened the shirt in his hand.

Walking all the way into the bedroom, then into the bathroom, after a rush of splashing water, the bathroom filled with steaming heat.

Ke Zhongyu took a hot shower.

It almost washed away the fatigue from the past few days in G Province, leaving only Jiang Lai's image in his mind.

In fact, Jiang Lai was more exhausted than he was, suffering mental and physical fatigue to the point of dozing off on the plane, her whole face flushed red from sleep.

The more he thought about it, the more Ke Zhongyu's breathing felt off.

He lowered his gaze and looked.

He turned down the water temperature.

After coming out of the bathroom half an hour later, he did not put on his usual robe but instead put on the shirt Jiang Lai had bought.

It was identical to the shirts hanging in his wardrobe, yet different in every way.

Having put on the shirt, he also needed to put on the suit pants.

Wearing slippers, he went to the dressing room, stood before the mirror, examined himself for a moment, and silently undid one shirt button.

Afterwards, Ke Zhongyu picked up his phone, clicked, took a photo, and sent it to Jiang Lai.

【Hmm, the shirt fits just right】

Having received the message, Jiang Lai had already finished her shower and was now making a video call to Dean Tang.

Dean Tang was in the hospital, Ping'an also appeared in the video, Chi Ce and Secretary Cen were also present, and they all greeted her.

When their conversation was winding down, two messages from Ke Zhongyu popped up at the top of her phone.

Jiang Lai tapped to open them.

His hair was still damp, but Ke Zhongyu wore a white shirt and suit pants.

He had no tie, no fitted vest, and no shiny leather shoes; the aloof, unapproachable aura about him had faded considerably.

However, the man's eyes remained deep and inherently intimidating.

Jiang Lai also sensed a homely feeling from the photo, as well as a relaxation she hadn't seen in him lately.

She looked at it rather seriously; Dean Tang in the video thought she had come for work-related matters, so he told her to get busy, and the call ended quickly.

Jiang Lai sent Dean Tang a good night.

Afterwards she replied to Ke Zhongyu's message.

【Just right is fine】

【Sleep early, Ke Zhongyu; I'll bring you breakfast tomorrow morning】

After sending that line, Jiang Lai first froze for a moment, and a scene from middle school flashed in her mind—girls and boys bringing breakfast to each other.

Previously obsessed with morning reading and memorization, she had never realized it before; this moment, she seemed to sense something.

Jiang Lai suddenly put down her phone.

Ke Zhongyu: 【Okay】

She stared at that word, did not reply again, and simply lay down to sleep.

That sleep was fairly sound.

The next morning she woke up at half past seven, half an hour later than usual.

After washing up, Jiang Lai went downstairs to find Aunt Mo already had breakfast ready and waiting for her.

"Good morning, Aunt Mo."

"Good morning, Miss Jiang."

"Aunt Mo, do we have fresh meat filling at home?" Jiang Lai glanced toward the kitchen.

Aunt Mo shook her head and said, "We have fresh meat but no pre-made filling; it would need to be chopped. What dish do you want to make, Jiang Lai?"

Jiang Lai picked up a boiled egg, peeled it as she walked to the kitchen, and said, "I'll make a bun."

Aunt Mo: "Buns? Then I'll have someone bring fresh meat filling over."

Jiang Lai: "No need, I'll chop it myself; I'm just making one."

Aunt Mo: "??"

"Make buns, just one?"

Aunt Mo went over and said, "The dough isn't even mixed yet! Miss Jiang, let me help you!"

"Thank you, Aunt Mo." Jiang Lai earnestly chopped the meat filling while Aunt Mo beside her kneaded the dough.

Ke Zhongying stretched lazily as she came downstairs, spotted two figures in the kitchen, and was momentarily surprised.

She walked over and asked, "Sister Jiang Lai, aren't you usually in the lab at this time?"

Jiang Lai turned her head and said, "I had something to attend to this morning, so I didn't go that early."

Ke Zhongying made an "oh oh" smell, smelled the aroma of buns, walked in to look, and indeed they were steaming buns.

"Did you eat baozi this morning, Mo Yi?"

"These baozi were made by Miss Jiang." Mo Yi said, "Miss, go wash your hands first; you'll be able to eat them right away."

"Okay." Ke Zhongying went out.

Jiang Lai was still waiting for the baozi to come out of the steamer; inside there was one big baozi plus two small ones. Although she said she would make only one, the filling and dough couldn't be that precise, so the extra happened to be enough to make two small baozi.

After they came out of the steamer, Jiang Lai put the big baozi in a bag and gave the small baozi to Mo Yi and Ke Zhongying.

"Chongying, I'm going to work; you take your time eating breakfast."

"Okay, Sister Jiang Lai, I have things to do after I finish eating."

"Okay."

Jiang Lai put on her coat and shoes, slung her large-capacity tote bag over her shoulder, wrapped a scarf around her neck, took an umbrella, and strode out.

Ke Zhongyu's car was already at the gate.

The driver opened the car door for her.

Ke Zhongyu wasn't in the car.

"Miss Jiang, President Ke has an important meeting this morning and drove to the office himself."

Jiang Lai gave an acknowledgement.

In the car she wasn't idle either; she took out a stack of documents from her bag, which was one-third of what she had taken from the blue file box, and she read, marked, and noted as she went.

Until the car stopped at the Ke Clan gate, Jiang Lai got out and walked in; the security guard at the gate greeted her.

"Good morning, Dr. Jiang."

"Morning."

The receptionist smiled and asked, "Dr. Jiang is back from her business trip."

Jiang Lai nodded: "Yeah, I'm back, good morning."

Along the way, many people greeted her.

Jiang Lai scanned her face to enter, went straight to the innermost elevator, scanned her face, and went in.

After the elevator went up, the receptionist staff immediately looked away and couldn't help whispering to a colleague: "Dr. Jiang always takes President Ke's private elevator; don't you think there's something… ambiguous between President Ke and Dr. Jiang?"

"Just sharing an elevator doesn't make it ambiguous; there are plenty of ambiguous people in the company."

"But that's President Ke's private elevator, and Dr. Jiang's status at Ke Clan has always been special, with high authority…"

"Dr. Jiang is the Party A representative."

"Alright."

"But…" the colleague suddenly turned serious, pondering: "Dr. Jiang and President Ke indeed always come and go together."

"You think so too, right? You haven't noticed? Wherever Dr. Jiang is, President Ke is sure to be! Or rather, President Ke is sure to be around!"

"Why do you look like you've gone crazy over shipping?"

Jiang Lai had no idea what the receptionist was saying; she took the elevator all the way up to the top-floor CEO's office, just in time to catch President Ke wrapping up his meeting.

The man in a suit walked in front, followed by Assistant Zhou and Secretary Guan half a step behind, and then a crowd of senior leaders.

Not only were the senior executives of Ke Clan headquarters present, but also the heads of all its subsidiaries and branches—young, middle-aged, men and women—all were there.

The moment Ke Zhongyu stopped and looked toward Jiang Lai, the people behind him also stopped and all turned to look at her.

All the senior executives of Ke Clan knew Dr. Jiang.

Jiang Lai instinctively stepped aside to make way, but Ke Zhongyu strode over to her side.

He reached out and said, "Breakfast."

Jiang Lai looked at him, then at the senior leaders still standing where they were, afraid to move.

"……" Must she really produce it here?

Ke Zhongyu: "Huh?"

Jiang Lai silently took one out of her bag, a plain big baozi in an ordinary plastic bag.

Ke Zhongyu's palm grew warm.

He curled the corner of his mouth, took a bite of the baozi, reached out to push open the office door, and signaled with his eyes for Jiang Lai to enter.

As Jiang Lai stepped inside, she felt many scorching eyes on her back staring at her.
