Chapter 317: Ke Zhongyu, Let's Give It a Try

~8 min read 1,573 words

Ke Fu and his wife and daughter had barely left Mujiang Tai for half an hour when Secretary Cen's call came through, saying his son had been in a car accident and was already sent to Hexin Yiyuan.

His heart suddenly tightened, and he ended the call with three words—"Understood"—then told the driver to turn the car around and head to Hexin Yiyuan.

Facing his wife's and daughter's puzzled, worried expressions, he said calmly, "Zhongyu and Jiang Lai were in a car accident. It's not too serious—they were injured and are already on their way to the hospital."

"Car accident?" Ms. Nian's expression visibly tensed.

Ke Zhongying had her worry and anxiety written all over her face: "They were perfectly fine just a moment ago. How did they get into a car accident?"

Ke Fu: "We won't know the specifics until we get there. Secretary Cen has already gone to the scene to handle the aftermath, and Secretary Guan has called together the PR Department and Legal Department people to go to the company."

Ms. Nian looked ahead and urged the driver, "If you can, drive a little faster."

The car sped all the way to Hexin Yiyuan, where the family happened to run into Chi Ce, who had also heard the news.

Mainly because Ke Zhongyu's license plate was too distinctive and eye-catching, and he was the one in power at Ke Group, the matter had already spread within a small circle—fortunately, Secretary Guan's side had promptly stopped it from escalating.

Ke Zhongyu's accident involved too wide a scope.

The four of them had no time for pleasantries—just a nod—and all rushed to the emergency room.

Ke Zhongyu was undergoing emergency wound treatment—stopping bleeding, bandaging. There were no large wounds, so no debridement or suturing was needed, but he still got a tetanus shot.

Jiang Lai just stood quietly to the side, watching President Chi disinfect and clean Ke Zhongyu's wounds, watching gauze get applied to Ke Zhongyu's forehead and his left hand wrapped in white gauze as well.

Ke Zhongyu's head was no longer so dizzy, and the ringing in his ears gradually disappeared. He looked up and saw Jiang Lai's red-rimmed eyes and anxious expression, and said calmly, "A Lai, come here."

He gestured for Jiang Lai to sit in the chair beside him.

Jiang Lai only walked over; she did not sit down.

Ke Zhongyu asked, "What are you afraid of? I'm perfectly fine."

Jiang Lai stared into the man's obsidian-like eyes, her eyes growing even redder. She turned her head and asked President Chi, "President Chi, after the bandaging is done, do we still need to do a head CT?"

President Chi nodded: "Not just that—head CT, hand X-ray, and cervical spine X-ray all need to be done."

Jiang Lai: "Okay."

Ke Zhongyu's hand had just been bandaged when his parents, younger sister, and Chi Ce also arrived.

He lifted his gaze toward the doorway. Ms. Nian's eyes were slightly red, and his sister's mouth was pursed, looking like she could burst into tears any second.

His father was still the calm one, stepping forward to look him up and down before turning to ask President Chi about the injuries. President Chi said the external wounds were no major issue, but everything else would have to wait for the test results.

Ke Fu nodded and looked at Jiang Lai: "Jiang Lai, how are you?"

"Uncle, I'm fine." Jiang Lai shook her head and told the Ke family what had happened. "A car came charging at me. Ke Zhongyu swerved the car to knock that car aside. I'm fine, but it got Ke Zhongyu injured. I'm sorry."

"As long as you're okay." Ke Fu breathed a sigh of relief. If something had happened to Jiang Lai, his son wouldn't be this calm right now. "I'll handle this matter."

Ke Zhongying went over, took Jiang Lai's hand, and hugged her: "Jiang Lai jiejie, as long as you're okay. As long as you and my brother are okay, that's all that matters. As long as you're okay."

Ms. Nian looked gently at Jiang Lai: "You must have been scared—scared by the car, and scared by Zhongyu too."

Jiang Lai received not a single word of blame, but instead one caring remark after another, and her eyes grew even redder.

Chi Ce looked Ke Zhongyu up and down: "You need to go get checked, right? Do you need someone to support you?"

Ke Zhongyu: "No need."

Chi Ce: "Still caring about face at a time like this? President Ke."

Ke Zhongyu stood up, his body swaying slightly. Everyone instinctively reached out to support him, and Jiang Lai was no exception—but Ke Zhongyu only grabbed Jiang Lai's hand.

Chi Ce: "…"

He really did seem to be fine.

Jiang Lai stepped forward and gripped Ke Zhongyu's palm in return: "I'll support you."

Ke Zhongyu had been about to say there was no need, but the moment he lowered his eyes and caught a glimpse of Jiang Lai's profile, the words "no need" were pushed back down into his stomach.

Ms. Nian noticed bloodstains on both of their clothes and spoke up: "I'll have someone bring two sets of clean clothes over. Take off the bloodstained clothes later and throw them straight into the trash can. Let's not bring bad luck home."

Ke Zhongyu nodded.

Ke Zhongying and Chi Ce, still worried, followed along to get the checkups.

It wasn't until the children had walked far away that Ms. Nian's tears finally fell: "I was scared to death."

Ke Fu put his arm around his wife's shoulders and comforted her: "It's fine. Our son looks full of vitality—he even has the mind to cling to Jiang Lai."

Ms. Nian: "How could a car come charging at Jiang Lai out of nowhere? No, I'm going to personally oversee this investigation. I want to see who's trying to harm our family."

Ke Fu felt the same way.

Ke Zhongyu dutifully went to get his checkups. Before going in for the brain CT, he stopped in his tracks, looked deeply at Jiang Lai, and raised his hand to gently smooth her disheveled hair.

"Don't worry."

Jiang Lai pressed her lips together, her heart aching and uncomfortable the whole time. Until she saw Ke Zhongyu's clean bill of health in the test report, she would not be at ease.

Ke Zhongyu knew this well, so after finishing the checkups, he said very earnestly to the doctor in charge: "If there's nothing wrong, just write the report normally. If there's any problem, make a fake report for me."

The doctor in charge of the checkups said she couldn't make that call.

Ke Zhongyu could only go tell President Chi, but his phone wasn't on him—it was in Jiang Lai's clothes pocket.

This was tricky.

After all the checkups were done, Ke Zhongyu gave Chi Ce a look, telling him to go keep an eye on the test report first.

Chi Ce understood the implication, but didn't do it.

A report could be faked, but a physical condition couldn't.

What he brought back was a genuine test report.

President Chi: "Mild concussion. Strict bed rest for three to five days, minimize walking around, don't stay up late, don't get agitated, don't do anything mentally taxing, avoid greasy and spicy food, take medicine on time, and change the dressings on the forehead and hand wounds as usual."

He looked at his son: "Remember to change the dressings."

As President Ke's personal doctor, this was indeed Chi Ce's job.

Chi Ce indicated he understood and reached out to take Ke Zhongyu's test report, reading through it carefully.

Ke Zhongying took two large bags from the driver, containing clothes, and set them in front of Ke Zhongyu and Jiang Lai.

Mom and Dad went to handle the car accident; this is the clothing just sent over—change into it at the hospital, Mom and Dad mean not to bring the blood‑stained clothes back home.

Chi Ce went to give Ke Zhongyu a hand.

Jiang Lai and Ke Zhongying went to the restroom, and the clothes they took off happened to be thrown into the trash can.

Jiang Lai wore a black form‑fitting knit long dress with a dark brown fur overcoat, while Ke Zhongyu wore a black mock‑neck sweater and suit pants.

The two stood together, a wealthy young lady and an aloof young master.

The four of them returned together to Yi Hao Bie Shu.

Ke Zhongyu sat down slowly on the sofa, Jiang Lai went to pour hot water, and Ke Zhongying and Chi Ce, having agreed similarly, went to the courtyard to greet Dade and Xiaomu.

The hot water was brought before Ke Zhongyu, and Jiang Lai said softly, "Drink slowly, don't tilt your head back too far or you might feel dizzy—do you have a straw?"

"None." Ke Zhongyu looked up at Jiang Lai standing before him, the fur already removed, the black knit long dress revealing her slender figure completely.

He had no lascivious thoughts, only knowing that this outfit had been a bit loose on Jiang Lai before, but now it fit just right.

"Finally not so thin anymore—credit goes to Aunt Mo."

It was precisely that sentence that made the string in Jiang Lai's heart, which originally had little hesitation, resonate—it was the throbbing of her wildly jumping heart.

"Ke Zhongyu."

"Hmm?"

"Let's give it a try."
