Chapter 32: She Doesn
Her thoughts returned, Jiang Lai said, "I don't really remember; during this period you didn't go back for meals, nor did you let me deliver them."
That sentence made Shen Xun fall silent.
Shen Xun himself knew that after Lin Shutong returned, he gave him a car each way every day, and they ate dinner together.
Jiang Lai: "President Shen handles countless affairs daily; he's either working overtime or attending social engagements."
Both overtime and socializing are excuses he used with Jiang Lai.
"Next time you go get it, I won't trust anyone else," Shen Xun's voice softened, "Is the master's wife feeling better? Remember to go home; tomorrow's the weekend, you don't have to work, right?"
"I won't."
"Perfect, I've prepared a gift for you; remember to come over this weekend." Shen Xun hung up after speaking.
Jiang Lai's phone received four messages in succession: a yoga class, an infant care class, a children's nutrition and health class, and a children's mental health class.
One session each on Saturday morning and afternoon, and one each on Sunday afternoon and evening.
She felt suffocated in an instant.
This is what they call a gift.
She's expected to quit her job, stay home to prepare for pregnancy, study all these courses, and from now on hold multiple roles: the Shen Family's maid, Shen Xun's cook, the child's nanny and nutritionist.
It's essentially a confinement labeled "marriage."
Jiang Lai ignored it, returned to the office, and heard Secretary Cen planning to get rid of her gym card, while Secretary Guan told her to list it on the second‑hand trading market.
"What second‑hand trading market?" Jiang Lai walked over, asking earnestly.
Secretary Guan showed her an APP, walked her through the steps, and asked, "What do you want to sell? Just write it down."
"Some courses." Jiang Lai began to work on it.
Secretary Cen glanced and saw they were all courses related to preparing for pregnancy and childbirth, a trace of worry appearing on her brow.
"Are you planning to have a child with President Shen?" her tone grew serious, "Secretary Jiang, do you want to think it over again? Once a woman has a child, she really can't get away."
Secretary Guan nodded repeatedly.
They had already seen President Shen's neglect of Secretary Jiang and his concern for another woman.
This is already a abyss; even if she doesn't plan to climb out, she must at least not fall deeper.
"That's his plan," Jiang Lai thought; Shen Xun intends to trap her completely with a child.
"But I'm not," she said, looking at the worried faces of Secretary Cen and Secretary Guan, the phone screen flashing before them, "so I plan to resell them."
The two exhaled a long breath.
Fortunately, Secretary Jiang's mind was still sharp.
Suddenly, Secretary Cen noticed the listed price and exclaimed, "0.9? You're reselling courses that cost several thousand for just 0.9?"
While speaking, Jiang Lai sent a private message backstage: "99+."
Jiang Lai then realized these courses cost tens of thousands, and Shen Xun was indeed willing to spend a fortune on her.
"You all go back first; I'll leave after I finish this."
"Alright, see you next week."
Jiang Lai sat back at her desk and began replying to private messages one by one; because the price was so low, many didn't believe it, suspecting a scam, yet it was tempting, and they kept asking if it was real.
Online, under a pseudonym, Jiang Lai stated plainly that she didn't want to have children, but didn't want her husband to know, which is why she was reselling them.
The reason for the low price is that she has requirements for buyers.
They must be similar in height and build, cannot miss a session, must wear a mask, and claim to be Mrs. Shen.
That instantly filters out most people, but new inquiries still come.
An hour later, Jiang Lai found someone who met the criteria and added a contact method.
The other party asked for a card; these courses have a dedicated card that registers class hours automatically after swiping.
Jiang Lai had to send a message to Shen Xun.
Shen Xun replied with a voice note: "It will be mailed to your home tonight."
Jiang Lai replied with a "Okay."
She had to go back tonight.
Jiang Lai dialed a number: "Uncle Deng, I'm going to Shen Xun's place tonight to pick up something; I'll be back later, you don't need to wait for me, rest early."
The master's wife and Uncle Deng are both getting old and go to bed early at night.
The other side told her that if she has any problem, just call; Uncle Deng will personally come to pick her up.
She indeed needed that, but dealing with the elderly was troublesome.
Jiang Lai could only think of Ke Zhongying, so she sent a message; Ke Zhongying replied with an "OK" gesture.
All arrangements settled, Jiang Lai stood up, and as soon as she stepped out of the office doorway she ran straight into Assistant Zhou and Ke Zhongyu.
Both fell silent.
Assistant Zhou asked, "Is Secretary Jiang still working overtime?"
"No, I was handling personal matters and got busy," Jiang Lai nodded at them and stepped aside.
Ke Zhongyu gave her a quick glance, then walked in.
Assistant Zhou followed closely, continuing, "President Shen transfers a large sum abroad every month, but it can't be traced…"
Jiang Lai's steps halted.
Ke Zhongyu has recently been covertly monitoring Star Universe Technology's activities; investigating Shen Xun was expected, and the large sum they mentioned, she happened to know about.
Jiang Lai turned back.
She knocked.
The man's deep gaze instantly locked onto her face.
"What's the matter?"
"I know where Shen Xun's money went." Jiang Lai looked at him and said, "But I have a condition."
"Why should I believe you?" Ke Zhongyu's gaze was sharp, "You are Shen Xun's legal wife."
Soon it won't be.
Jiang Lai met his scrutiny: "If you know where that money went, you'd understand. At Lin Shutong's place, Boss Ke should know her; her maternal grandfather just had someone pass a message to Boss Ke a couple days ago, asking him to promote me."
"Who said your promotion was someone else's idea?" After hearing her words, Ke Zhongyu had one question after another in his mind, "Who is Lin Shutong?"
He knew, but he couldn't show it in front of Jiang Lai that he had long ago investigated that Shen Xun had a third sister.
Jiang Lai was slightly doubtful.
Assistant Zhou explained: "Boss Ke, Lin Shutong is the one the young lady pointed at in the mall last time, calling her a typical green-tea girl."
Jiang Lai: "……"
Jiang Lai pressed her lips, wanting to laugh but had to hold back.
Assistant Zhou continued: "She is also Ji Lao's granddaughter; last year the old master held his eightieth birthday banquet at the Ke residence, Ji Lao also attended, but the Lin family was not on the invitation list."
Assistant Zhou didn't even call them the Lin family, just "those with the surname Lin."
Lin Shutong's family could only be considered upper-middle class; in the eyes of the top-tier Ke family, they were still just a grain of sand—like Shen Xun, who barely qualified as wealthy, but more accurately were just "rich people."
To call them the "Shen family" is merely everyone acknowledging Shen Xun's worth as a tech nouveau riche.
And all of that is nothing in the Ke family's eyes.
Jiang Lai asked: "My promotion wasn't arranged by Lin Shutong speaking to someone, was it?"
Ke Zhongyu: "She doesn't have that much influence."
Jiang Lai: "Okay."
Regardless of whose idea it was, when the time comes she'll leave, continue her research, and no longer need to hide.
Getting back to the point, Jiang Lai said: "Shen Xun gives Lin Shutong three million each month for research expenses; I've told you that now, and my condition is that you obtain the transaction records and give me a copy."
Ke Zhongyu sized her up again: "What do you need that for?"
To sue for divorce?
To find the third sister and reclaim marital property?
Jiang Lai: "To give away."
To give to Shen Xun's parents and sister.
