Chapter 320: Two Posts in One Night
President Chi had instructed Ke Zhongyu to strictly stay in bed for three to five days. Jiang Lai was strong-willed in execution, and with Chi Ce as his personal doctor and Ke Zhongying keeping an eye on her older brother for their parents, Ke Zhongyu was practically forced by the three of them to lie down on the bed in the master bedroom.
Ke Zhongying brought water.
Chi Ce handed over medicine.
But neither was given to Ke Zhongyu; instead, they were placed in front of Jiang Lai.
Ke Zhongying: "Sister Jiang Lai, I'm handing my brother over to you from now on. I'll sleep in the guest room. Good night."
Chi Ce: "I'll take another guest room. My phone will be on twenty-four hours. Call me if anything comes up."
As the two left, only the pair remained in the bedroom. Ke Zhongyu spoke first: "Mo Yi is on her way. She'll tidy up the second bedroom."
"Mm." Jiang Lai nodded, looking at the gauze on his forehead and the bandages wrapped around his hand, a hint of sadness in her expression. "Take your medicine and sleep early. President Chi said you can't stay up late."
Ke Zhongyu hummed in acknowledgment, his gaze slowly tracing her features as he watched her pick up the medicine and bring it to his lips. He opened his mouth and took it, and the water glass was also handed over.
Jiang Lai didn't let go of the cup, meaning she intended to help him drink.
Gulp.
One mouthful of water washed the medicine down into his stomach.
After he finished, Jiang Lai said seriously, "Ke Zhongyu, don't do anything so dangerous again."
"Scared?" Ke Zhongyu saw her brows slightly lowered.
"Mm, pretty scared." Jiang Lai's voice carried a hint of a nasal tone.
To Ke Zhongyu's ears, it sounded inexplicably soft, instantly making his heart melt into a mess. He said softly, "Give me a hug."
Jiang Lai lifted her eyes: "You're injured."
Ke Zhongyu: "A hug won't kill me."
Jiang Lai: "..."
"Ke Zhongyu, can you watch your words? Avoid taboos."
Ke Zhongyu immediately said he could, reaching out to pull Jiang Lai, who was sitting by the bed, into his arms. The crisp, clean scent unique to Jiang Lai instantly filled his nostrils.
"A Lai, don't be afraid." The man's voice was very magnetic, his warm breath like a magnetic field in his eyes, precisely drawing Jiang Lai in.
By Jiang Lai's ear was the thumping of the man's heartbeat, strong and powerful, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, as if deliberately adjusting his own breathing. She gently nodded in his arms.
After less than two minutes of hugging, Jiang Lai pulled away from his embrace and said, "You should sleep now."
Ke Zhongyu held her hand, unwilling to let go.
Jiang Lai's fingers felt hot: "I'm not leaving. Didn't you say Mo Yi is tidying the second bedroom?"
"Mm." Ke Zhongyu knew.
But having just confirmed their relationship, how could he bear to be apart? Even half a meter away made him anxious.
Jiang Lai hadn't expected Ke Zhongyu to be so clingy. His long, narrow, deep eyes made her heart race.
"You'll see me when you wake up tomorrow."
Only then did Ke Zhongyu slowly let go of her hand. As Jiang Lai stood up to leave, Ke Zhongyu asked her, "Did you bring a charger for your phone?"
Jiang Lai hadn't brought one.
"There should be one at home. Have Mo Yi find it."
Jiang Lai didn't understand why Ke Zhongyu had brought up the charger at first, until she quickly brushed her teeth and washed her face, and had just sat down on the edge of the bed in the second bedroom. Ke Zhongyu sent a message asking if she had lain down. The moment she sent the word "About to," a voice call came through.
Looking at Ke Zhongyu's name and profile picture on her phone, Jiang Lai's state of mind was completely different.
This call was from her boyfriend.
The relationship had just been confirmed tonight.
They had shared a kiss.
Her boyfriend had also posted a Moments update about them being together, on both his personal and work accounts.
Jiang Lai swiped her finger to answer.
"Lying down?" The man's voice came through the phone, as if carrying an electric current, sending a slight tingle through Jiang Lai's ear.
She lay down and pulled up the covers: "Lying down."
"Mm." Ke Zhongyu was silent for a moment. "I kind of miss you."
Jiang Lai couldn't help but smile: "I'm right next door."
Ke Zhongyu: "I know."
Even with just one wall between them, he still missed her.
Jiang Lai: "You need to sleep."
Ke Zhongyu: "I'm sleeping."
Jiang Lai: "Then should I hang up?"
Ke Zhongyu: "Can't you not hang up?"
Jiang Lai thought for a moment, her gaze falling on the charger Mo Yi had just brought her.
The white charger was plugged into the socket above the bedside table, its cord stretching toward her.
"Is this why you asked if I brought a charger?"
"Mm." Ke Zhongyu didn't deny it.
In the end, Jiang Lai didn't hang up. Before going to sleep, she asked him for the three photos from tonight.
She chose the one of Ke Zhongyu's profile, screenshotted the Moments post Ke Zhongyu had made, cropped out the name and profile picture, leaving only the caption and the image, and posted it on her own Moments.
The caption was: Mm, agreed.
She posted it and went to sleep.
Completely unaware that Ke Zhongyu in the next room saw it, got so excited he couldn't sleep all night, screenshotted Jiang Lai's Moments post, cropped out the name and profile picture the same way, and posted another one.
Ke Zhongyu usually posted on Moments maybe once a year, but this time he posted two in a row, both about the same thing.
Early in the morning, after waking up and scrolling, Secretary Cen and Secretary Guan exchanged a knowing look—who says President Ke is cold-hearted, ruthless, sharp-tongued, overbearing, and doesn't know how to win a woman's favor?
When he meets someone he likes, he's better than anyone at it.
Ke Fu, who had just left Hexin Yiyuan, told Ms. Nian, 'Jiang Lai has finally agreed to be with Ke Zhongyu; Ke Zhongyu posted two moments on social media in one night, posting from both accounts.'
Ms. Nian smiled at her husband and said, 'Congratulations to us.'
Ke Fu understood instantly and said, 'Congratulations to us.'
Congratulations, they now have a solution to that worry.
If it weren't for Jiang Lai, they'd still be worrying whether their son would end up alone for life.
The two of them went straight to Nanshan Villa Number One.
Jiang Lai had already gotten up, was tying her hair and pouring hot water; hearing footsteps, she looked up and said, 'Uncle, Aunt.'
Jiang Lai, who had been natural in front of them, now became a bit restrained because her status had changed.
But in Ke Fu and Ms. Nian's eyes, Jiang Lai's identity has always been that of their future daughter-in-law; it all depends on when their son has the ability to win her over.
'Morning, Jiang Lai.' Ms. Nian walked over and asked, 'Did you rest well last night?'
Jiang Lai nodded: 'Pretty good, Aunt.'
She just dreamed of Ke Zhongyu.
Ms. Nian: 'That's good.'
Ke Fu said, 'The black car that lost control and hit you last night was driven by Lin Shutong; we've reported it to the police, who are investigating first. If they find nothing, we'll still give you an explanation.'
Jiang Lai was surprised it was Lin Shutong, yet not surprised it was Lin Shutong.
'The matter of Ji Lao being reported isn't me.'
'We know.' Ms. Nian comforted her with a trusting look.
Ke Fu said, 'The seventy million is just a pretext; someone is taking advantage of the situation. Ji Lao has been fishing in troubled waters for years, so today's outcome is expected. Lin Shutong also knows her grandfather isn't clean, but she can't accept that Ji Lao's trouble is because of her, so she lashes out recklessly, disregarding the consequences.'
Ms. Nian wondered, 'But how did Lin Shutong insist it was you? Ke Zhongyu should also know about the seventy million, right?'
Jiang Lai nodded.
Ms. Nian said, 'Why are they coming after you? Given my son's vengeful nature, shouldn't we suspect he did it?'
Ke Fu pondered, 'It seems like someone behind the scenes is targeting you. You should pay more attention to the people around you lately—never let your guard down.'
Jiang Lai nodded again, her gaze growing more sincere; she would always be moved by the elders' genuine care.
'Is Ke Zhongyu awake?' Ms. Nian asked. After learning from Jiang Lai that her son had woken up, she and her husband went upstairs together.
Jiang Lai waited for the boiling water in the cup to cool to warm, then took the cup and medicine upstairs.
The master bedroom door stood wide open, as if they weren't worried that the family's conversation might be overheard.
From the bedroom came Ms. Nian's remark: 'Ke Yue, do you think if we gave Jiang Lai ten hundred million, she'd be less likely to break up with our son?'
