Chapter 415: You Were the Ones Who Got Sick First

~7 min read 1,346 words

Old Master Song sent all the servants out, walked over to the balcony, and said to Old Lady Song and Song Shiwei, "Come inside and explain things clearly."

Song Shiwei stood rooted to the spot, dragged inside by Old Lady Song, who was determined to make her explain clearly what had happened in G Province twenty-eight years ago.

Song Shiwei kept her mouth shut, tears streaming down in a torrent, then raised her hand to wipe them away. No matter how the two elders pressed her, they could not pry a single word from her mouth. Even when the two elders voiced all their guesses, she remained utterly silent.

"Here we go again." Old Lady Song had a terrible headache. Her daughter's state reminded her of the time after her daughter and son-in-law brought Gu Yinxue back from G Province—crying day and night, either saying nothing or lashing out in temper, and after the outburst, trembling all over by herself.

Every time she saw Gu Yinxue, she always looked terrified; when she got angry, she would pick up the child and throw her out, then scramble to gather her back, pressing her to her chest, kissing and hugging her and saying sorry.

The whole person was half mad.

So much so that in the first two years, Gu Sen hardly dared to let Shiwei have contact with the child.

She hadn't understood back then why Shiwei was like this. Even if the second child wasn't a son, it shouldn't have come to this. Besides, there was already one in front, so at worst they could just keep having more.

Now she finally understood.

So there had been an abandonment.

Old Lady Song kept poking her daughter's forehead: "What were you thinking? You were an official's wife—how dare you abandon a child at a time like that!"

Old Master Song gradually put it together: "So Gu Sen left government for business back then because of this matter, is that right?"

Back then, when Gu Sen abandoned a government career for business, the Song family was the first to find it unacceptable. Even after all these years, the matter still stuck in Old Master Song's heart—a bright future just tossed aside, who knew what wire had gotten crossed to commit such a grave mistake. It turned out the crux of the matter lay with his daughter.

Old Lady Song, slow to catch on, looked at her daughter furiously and scolded, "How could you have been so reckless back then!"

The daughter had been about to continue her silence and crying, but unexpectedly she suddenly raised her eyes and glared fiercely at the two of them, saying something utterly unfilial.

"You're the ones who taught me this!"

Song Shiwei had been on edge lately, plagued by endless nightmares, sleeping in a separate room from her husband, her mental state perpetually strained, utterly unable to withstand any shock.

She furiously fired back at them: "It's because of you! Gu Sen only came to propose marriage, and before the wedding banquet was even held, you were already in my ear every day—get pregnant right after getting married, you must have a son, you must have a son!"

"When we first got married, Gu Sen was too busy. I told you, Gu Sen was too busy, too busy, he wasn't considering having a child yet, letting a child come so quickly. What did you say about me?"

Song Shiwei looked at her mother and challenged her: "Do you remember what you said about me? You said I was incompetent—what man doesn't want children? You even questioned whether something was wrong with my body, found an excuse to call me back, took me to the hospital for tests. When the results showed no problems, you said the doctor probably wasn't competent, and you started hunting for folk remedies. How many folk remedies did you force me to take!"

Later, when Gu Sen found out that Song Shiwei was taking random medication, he took time off and brought her to the hospital for a full checkup. The doctor said her body had already been affected—if she kept taking them, let alone a son, she wouldn't be able to have any child at all.

Song Shiwei was struck as if by lightning. Fortunately, Gu Sen kept comforting her that it could be regulated back to health, telling her not to fixate on having a son—sons and daughters were the same, all their children.

Everyone else got pregnant within a year of marriage; only she didn't. The Gu family would drop pointed remarks from time to time, and every time Gu Sen told his family that his focus was on his career and he had no plans for children for now.

Later, unable to withstand the elders' overt and covert pressure and urging, Gu Sen even went so far as to ruin his own image in public, saying that he had a physical problem and the doctor said he needed a few years of treatment.

Song Shiwei looked at her husband standing before others to protect her, and that night she hid under the covers and cried silently for a long time.

She thought, she must give Gu Sen a son.

To carry on the Gu family line for Gu Sen.

To let Gu Sen recover the face he had lost.

To bring glory to Gu Sen.

……

Old Master Song and Old Lady Song looked at their daughter before them, momentarily speechless.

After a long while, Old Master Song said, "You are truly sick."

"You were the ones who got sick first!" Song Shiwei accused her parents hoarsely.

Old Master Song had been head of the household his whole life—how could he let his wife and children speak of his faults? He immediately raised his hand to slap Song Shiwei, but Old Lady Song caught his arm with both hands.

"What are you doing! How can you still hit your daughter?"

"Hit me, go on, hit me!" Song Shiwei talked back.

Old Lady Song glared at her daughter: "That's enough of that. Why must you keep provoking him!"

Song Shiwei looked at her parents furiously and stormed off toward the Gu family.

This standoff subsided briefly.

The servants who had been sent out saw Song Shiwei leave with red-rimmed eyes, bringing only the driver.

One of the servants, seeing this, clutched her phone and hid in a concealed corner to make a call.

"Miss, Madam seems to have had a dispute with Old Master Song and Old Lady Song—her eyes were red with anger, and she called the driver and went out. Miss, give Madam a call. Madam loves you the most—you were raised by Madam's own hand, no one else can compare. Madam has the final say on all matters big and small in the household, Sir dotes on Madam, and the Young Master listens to Madam too."

When Gu Yinxue received the call, she was in the office at the Gongzuoshi, mulling over how to find an excuse to go be near her parents and brother to make her presence felt—and here came the opportunity.

"Thank you, Wu Ma. I'll go check on Mom. Grandfather and Grandmother must be blaming Mom because of my matter, right?"

"I've watched the Miss grow up too, and I don't like seeing the Miss always living outside. Outside can never be as comfortable as home. If you soothe Madam, you'll be able to come back."

"Wu Ma, thank you for worrying about these things for me."

"The Miss is always very good to us too."

After hanging up, Gu Yinxue immediately dialed her mother's phone, but it rang for a long time with no answer.

Gu Yinxue frowned and called Wu Ma again, asking if she knew which car her mother had driven out.

Wu Ma gave the car model and license plate number.

Knowing these made things much easier.

B City was where she had grown up, and most of her social circle was here. Finding out where her mother's car had gone was not difficult.
