Chapter 418: One After Another, Endlessly
Ever since he waved his hand and gave Lin Shutong nine million of his personal wealth, Gu Zhiyan could no longer afford to stay in a decent hotel, and could only live in Li Dan's house nearest to Number Ten Courtyard on Yanping Road.
The nearest one was still ten kilometers away.
When Xie Yongsi learned of this, he merely gave Li Dan a deep look. Li Dan smiled, picked up his wine glass and clinked it with his, carrying a sense that everything was understood without words.
The two were quite alike in this regard, but people were ultimately not the same.
Xie Yongsi was the least regarded young master in his family; unable to touch the family business, he could only eat, drink, and play. But the situation was different now—Shen Xun had earned him no small amount of face at the Xie family, and his family had begun to look at him differently.
Though Li Dan was also a playboy second-generation rich kid, he had properly graduated from a prestigious foreign university. After returning home, while he hadn't inherited the family business, his family still waved a hand and gave him a company to build, to see whether he could make something of it.
He couldn't compare to an heir like Ke Zhongyu who held heavy authority, but after taking over a subsidiary, Li Dan developed a game that was currently booming with considerable momentum, and Li Dan's personal net worth rose along with it.
With a career established and a family to start, the Li family had already begun raising the matter of marriage, and had a suitable candidate.
Fu Youqing.
Xie Yongsi spat out a mouthful of wine: "Who did you say?"
Li Dan: "Fu Daxiaojie."
Xie Yongsi: "You two knew each other since you were in split-crotch pants. If anything was going to happen, it would've happened long ago, right?"
Li Dan smiled: "Yeah, we count as childhood sweethearts. Fu Youqing and I know each other inside out. There's nothing bad about getting married—the elders of both families would be happy, and it saves a lot of trouble. I have no objections to this marriage either way."
Whether Fu Daxiaojie had any objections, he didn't know.
The next second, Li Dan received a message from Fu Youqing, saying she wanted to meet.
Li Dan got up and left right away.
"Where are you going?" Xie Yongsi asked.
Li Dan: "To discuss things with my childhood sweetheart."
Xie Yongsi laughed and cursed: "Lucky you."
……
After Gu Zhiyan stayed in A City, his every move was within Ke Zhongyu's field of observation. When he learned that the residential complex Gu Zhiyan lived in was only a bit over ten kilometers from Number Ten Courtyard on Yanping Road, Ke Zhongyu pinched the bridge of his nose and asked Secretary Cen and Secretary Guan a question.
"Don't they have any new tricks?"
First Shen Xun moved into Nanshan Villa, then Gu Zhiyan—one after another, endlessly.
Secretary Cen said: "Being in the same cultural environment, everyone knows the principle of the pavilion closest to the water getting the moon first."
Secretary Guan smiled and said: "I remember President Ke also wanted to buy a place at Number Ten Courtyard before, but there were no vacant units so he couldn't." Otherwise, pulling some strings would have gotten him in too.
Ke Zhongyu: "……"
Secretary Cen lowered her eyes and pursed her lips, not daring to laugh—if she laughed, her job might be at risk.
But she silently gave Secretary Guan a thumbs up.
Ke Zhongyu opened his mouth to tell the two to get out. The word "get lost" had just reached the tip of his tongue when his gaze caught Jiang Lai arriving at the office doorway. He curled his tongue back and swallowed the word "get lost," saying only two words: "Step out."
Secretary Cen and Secretary Guan quickly turned around and happened to see Jiang Lai standing at the doorway, raising her hand to knock.
So it was his wife who had come—no wonder President Ke's tongue just now seemed to have been scalded; he had even become pleasant and amiable.
Jiang Lai's appearance also made the two straighten their backs, smiling as they called out to Professor Jiang.
"Professor Jiang, here to see President Ke?"
"Guan Guan, don't say President Ke this and President Ke that—that's Professor Jiang's boyfriend." Secretary Cen gave Jiang Lai a wink, her red lips curving as she walked out, and even pulled the office door shut behind her.
Jiang Lai looked at Ke Zhongyu, then looked at the two leaving, her eyes showing confusion.
Ke Zhongyu's expression was helpless.
Jiang Lai smiled silently, walked over, and said: "You can start preparing the product launch in ten days."
"Are you sure?" Ke Zhongyu stood up and pressed Jiang Lai down into his chair.
Jiang Lai sat down, now having to look up even more at him: "Sure. The crop detection system is almost ready too. The industrial robot cycle is a bit longer."
"There's a quarterly report meeting this afternoon. I'll have the launch arrangements delegated." Ke Zhongyu told her, "Secretary Guan will take you to take Subject One."
Jiang Lai declined: "No need to go to so much trouble. The exam takes two hours."
Ke Zhongyu raised an eyebrow slightly: "Should I take you?"
Jiang Lai: "You take me for Subject Three and Subject Four. No need for Subject One and Subject Two."
Ke Zhongyu reached out and touched the back of her head.
Jiang Lai was already used to his way of expressing intimacy, and said calmly: "From what Chongying said, you taught her S-curves using racing techniques? No wonder she kept failing."
Ke Zhongyu withdrew the hand resting on the back of her head.
"She insisted on learning."
"Was it that you couldn't help yourself once you got on the track, or that she insisted on learning?" Jiang Lai looked at him at her leisure.
Ke Zhongyu: "……"
Jiang Lai knew just from looking at him like this. She took the initiative to raise her hand and hook his fingers: "You teach me? My control is decent—I won't fail because of it."
Ke Zhongyu looked at her in surprise: "Racing?"
Jiang Lai nodded.
She quite liked watching Ke Zhongyu race. Compared to sitting in Ke Zhongyu's passenger seat, she preferred to race side by side with him.
"Sure." Ke Zhongyu had originally intended to teach his sister racing. Who knew Ke Zhongying would learn a botched version—she hadn't gotten the hang of AIO racing lines and trail braking, and instead kept failing her exams.
The two were still talking when a knock sounded at the office door.
Ke Zhongyu and Jiang Lai looked up.
"Come in." The man's low voice sounded. The door opened, and beside Assistant Zhou stood a smiling Ke Chi.
Ke Zhongyu said flatly: "The quarterly meeting this afternoon."
"Came early to see big brother." Ke Chi's gaze landed first on Jiang Lai's face—a woman who could sit calmly in Ke Zhongyu's seat, with Ke Zhongyu resting one hand on the back of the chair in a clear protective posture. He smiled, "And my future sister-in-law."
Jiang Lai had heard Ke Zhongying mention that the family had an older cousin, but had never met him.
She had only met one branch of the Ke Family — Ke Zhongyu's household — as well as her mentor's wife's good friend Ke Yunhui, Ke Zhongyu's biological second aunt.
She slowly rose to her feet.
Ke Zhongyu introduced: "Fourth Uncle's son, Ke Chi."
Ke Chi looked at Jiang Lai with a smile, and Jiang Lai looked at him too.
"Hello, Miss Jiang." Ke Chi extended his hand.
Jiang Lai raised her hand for a light handshake, then let go.
Ke Chi glanced at Ke Zhongyu: "I always knew Big Brother had a girlfriend, but seeing is better than hearing — a young associate professor, and this beautiful too. No wonder Big Brother likes her."
Anyone would like her.
He liked her too.
"If you don't need your eyes, you can donate them." Ke Zhongyu's icy voice pressed over heavily.
Ke Chi was slightly startled inwardly, but still wore a smile on his face, as if he hadn't heard: "I came early because I wanted to look around headquarters. I won't disturb Big Brother and Miss Jiang anymore."
Jiang Lai felt that the aura on this person was a mixed one — he had both Xie Yongsi's uninhibited Young Master energy and Assistant Zhou's fox-like sly smile. In short, if she could avoid having any dealings with him, she would.
"Looking at who?" Ke Zhongyu pinched Jiang Lai's chin, forcing her to turn her head and tilt her neck up to look at him.
Jiang Lai blinked: "Looking at you now."
Ke Zhongyu muttered softly: "Glib tongue."
Jiang Lai's expression was slightly bewildered: "?"
This degree counted too?
To Ke Zhongyu, anything that could delight him to bursting counted.
Outside the office door, Ke Chi's footsteps paused briefly. He turned back to glance at the tightly shut door, a glint of shrewdness flashing through his eyes. He was genuinely curious whether Jiang Lai's place in Ke Zhongyu's heart was truly as important as the outside rumors claimed.
