Chapter 483: Such a Grave Crime Cannot End with Mere Death
Chi Ce carried the medical kit aboard the yacht, and as he bent to enter the cabin, the first thing he heard was "Doctor Chi" — from Jiang Lai, her voice slightly tinged with nervousness, though her gaze seemed calm enough.
President Ke stood right beside Jiang Lai, one hand gently stroking her back, his eyes also turning toward him.
The smell of blood filled his nose.
He stepped forward for a look — the severe knife wound on the arm had already been given emergency treatment with gauze.
After removing the gauze, Chi Ce saw a long diagonal wound; the skin and subcutaneous tissue on both sides had been everted and curled up from the force of the cut, the wound surface still oozing blood that hadn't fully stopped, and the surrounding area already showing inflammatory redness and swelling.
"A knife wound, soaked by rain, secondary fever — three factors stacked together, the risk of infection is extremely high." Chi Ce said as he hastened to treat it: "This wound needs debridement and suturing, but the conditions here aren't sterile. We need to get to a hospital as quickly as possible."
Ke Zhongyu clearly felt Jiang Lai's back go tense, and immediately ordered: "Send him to the hospital right now."
The words had barely fallen when Gu Zhiyan, soaked to the bone, appeared at the cabin's inner doorway, exhausted, and quickly came to the bedside. Looking at his father — pale and unconscious — he anxiously asked Chi Ce how the situation was.
Chi Ce was Ke Zhongyu's man, always of one mind with Ke Zhongyu. Ke Zhongyu had no regard for the Gu family and no regard for Gu Zhiyan, so Chi Ce wouldn't initiate conversation with anyone, much less answer their questions.
Gu Zhiyan was frantic. Only after receiving a meaningful look from Ke Zhongyu did Chi Ce describe Gu Sen's condition, not forgetting to add: "The people your Gu clan raised — even a sickly one still has quite the nerve. Kidnapping the parents who raised her, even having someone injure her adoptive father this badly, and fleeing for her life on the open sea in a torrential downpour."
Gu Zhiyan was speechless, his lips trembling badly. He lowered his eyes — he himself was still shaken by what had happened tonight, but in that instant he bowed his head: "Doctor Chi, save my father."
Chi Ce gave a light laugh and stood up: "I'm not saving your father." It was Jiang Lai's biological father, Ke Zhongyu's father-in-law beyond any doubt.
"Alright, let's get to the hospital." Chi Ce looked at Ke Zhongyu and Jiang Lai, and on the way to taking Gu Sen to the hospital, he mentioned what he'd just seen when he came over: "Song Shiwei struck Gu Yinxue in the chest with a rock — several times. I went close to look; her clothes were worn through, there was blood, the injury was no light matter. The police have already sent her to the hospital. Even if it comes to sentencing, they'll have to wait until she makes it through the gates of death."
Ke Zhongyu's eyes darkened: "Transfer a doctor from B City to save her. She must be kept alive."
Chi Ce smiled: "Alright."
Gu Zhiyan froze for a moment, not understanding why Ke Zhongyu would want to find a doctor to save Gu Yinxue, that heartless beast, but seeing Jiang Lai's calm reaction and Chi Ce's meaningful smile, it hit him like a revelation.
Ke Zhongyu wasn't saving Gu Yinxue at all — he was torturing Gu Yinxue.
Having committed such a grave crime, how could she simply die and be done with it.
Once in the car heading to the hospital, Jiang Lai's gaze fell from time to time on the unconscious Gu Sen, and from time to time turned to the pitch-dark window outside. The heavy rain was still falling, leaving trail after trail of water streaks on the glass.
In the cold night, the only warmth Jiang Lai could feel was Ke Zhongyu, sitting pressed against her.
Ke Zhongyu held her hand the entire time, never letting go.
At the hospital, Chi Ce wheeled Gu Sen into the operating room. Jiang Lai sat on an icy chair, and only when a cup of warm water was placed in her hands did she slowly come back to her senses.
Gu Zhiyan looked at Jiang Lai, who hadn't said a word the whole way, and asked with concern: "Were you frightened?"
Ke Zhongyu said in a low voice: "No."
His A Lai wasn't frightened — she was feeling something complicated, something she couldn't express.
Gu Zhiyan was still a bit worried about Jiang Lai, even though he knew she didn't need it and didn't want it.
He sat down too, on the stool beside Jiang Lai, gathered his thoughts, and said to her: "Gu Yinxue first incited others to commit crimes, then kidnapped and assaulted police — she can't escape legal punishment. Mother can talk now, but she drifts in and out of lucidity, and it's still unclear what her condition is. I locked her in the car. Once Dad's injuries are stabilized, we'll go back together."
"The old man has already agreed to let Dad leave the Gu clan. Dad had been setting up this chess game for a long time, so there's no major financial loss. The team in A City is made of people Dad brought out from the Gu clan, carefully selected..." Gu Zhiyan trailed off and suddenly froze. He didn't know why he was telling Jiang Lai all this either — maybe he wanted to find something to talk about, maybe he wanted the father-daughter relationship to ease a little.
The mother-daughter relationship had long since shattered, the sibling relationship was still at rock bottom — at the very least, the father-daughter relationship shouldn't be this bad.
"Dad has already signed the divorce agreement. Mother hasn't signed yet, but whether she signs or not isn't her call anymore. Once we're back in B City, I'll send Mother to a care facility and have someone watch over her." Even though Gu Zhiyan detested his own mother at this moment, she was still his mother, and he had to fulfill his responsibility and duty to care for her.
Gu Zhiyan looked at Jiang Lai's profile and thought to himself — she really does look like Father.
He, on the other hand, resembled his mother more. Even after being raised by his father's side for thirty years, he hadn't learned a thing from his father's way of conducting himself. Instead, under the constraints of the family and his mother's heavy hand, he'd developed an arrogant and conceited temperament.
He wanted to apologize to Jiang Lai on his mother's behalf, but it wasn't his place to do so — whether admitting fault, apologizing, or repenting, it should all come from Mother herself.
The operating room door opened, and Chi Ce walked out.
Jiang Lai's gaze immediately followed him, and she slowly stood up.
Gu Zhiyan rose as well, looking expectantly at Chi Ce.
Chi Ce said to Ke Zhongyu and Jiang Lai: "Don't worry — it's just a knife wound, not a bullet left inside. He'll be fine once he wakes up at daybreak. But he'll need to recover properly, so he should be transferred to B City."
Jiang Lai nodded: "Okay."
Gu Zhiyan's parted lips closed, then opened again: "Thank you, Doctor Chi."
Chi Ce gave him a slight twitch of the lip, nodding without saying a word.
Gu Sen was wheeled into a spacious, quiet room. An IV needle was in the back of his hand. Jiang Lai stood by the bed, just watching quietly, watching without blinking, and pressed the call button when the drip was nearly finished.
Gu Zhiyan sat on the sofa, drowsy. Chi Ce noticed something was off, went over, and reached out to feel his forehead, then said: "Young Master Gu, go find a doctor and get an antipyretic injection. Both your parents are in trouble now — if you collapse too, how will the rest be handled? There's plenty for you to handle ahead."
Gu Zhiyan said his thanks and unsteadily went off to find a doctor.
Meanwhile, Ke Zhongyu's phone hadn't stopped from midnight to dawn — calls from the company, from his parents, and from the Nian Family.
The news of Gu Sen and his wife being kidnapped by their adopted daughter probably couldn't be suppressed.
At the same time, Gu Yinxue was still being resuscitated in an operating room at the same hospital. Around seven in the morning, the doctor announced that Gu Yinxue was out of life-threatening danger. She was then sent to the intensive care unit, with police posted to guard her, only waiting for her to wake up before being escorted back to B City to await sentencing.
