Chapter 55: What Do You Really Mean to Jiang Lai?

~8 min read 1,455 words

Shen Xun recalled that Jiang Lai had a slight cleanliness obsession; at home she could not stand any mess, and if there was even a little disorder she would immediately tidy up.

But Jiang Lai hadn't gone home for several days.

The home was in disarray.

"Jiang Lai, when will you come back? The home needs you."

"Shen Xun, you're not short of money; hiring a maid doesn't require you to buy gold and silver jewelry, it won't empty your wallet."

Shen Xun's heart lurched, and his breath grew shallow.

"What do you mean?"

Jiang Lai knew he felt guilty, and calmly blinked her eyes: "The literal meaning—what else could it mean?"

Shen Xun said softly: "Nothing."

"What nothing?" Not buying jewelry for Lin Shutong?

Shen Xun felt his guilt rise under her clear gaze.

"I said the home needs you not to treat you as a maid; I want you to come back—this is your home, what's the point of always staying at someone else's place?"

Shen Xun's words reminded her.

Taking advantage of having bonus money, she hurried to buy an apartment.

"Got it." Jiang Lai replied, just as she took out her phone, Shen Xun fixed his gaze on her again.

"When did you change your phone? What happened to the old one?" Shen Xun frowned, feeling a vague unease again.

Jiang Lai made a new friend.

Jiang Lai began to pay attention to her appearance.

Jiang Lai started not going home.

Jiang Lai also changed to a new phone…

"That one was always broken." Jiang Lai's voice hesitated slightly, "It should have been replaced long ago."

Shen Xun softened his tone: "Why didn't you tell me?"

"Do I have to inform you every time I change phones?" Jiang Lai looked at him, puzzled.

Shen Xun shook his head: "No, I mean tell me so I can get you a new phone."

"Oh, no need, I can do it myself."

"Where did you get the money?"

Jiang Lai almost laughed in anger: "President Shen, even the four thousand of my four‑thousand‑a‑month salary is money, incomparable to your current annual income of ten million."

"Jiang Lai, must you speak to me in this tone?" Shen Xun began explaining tonight's events: "I didn't know the whole family would come to dinner; if I had, I wouldn't have left you behind."

"So you thought I was coming to eat with whom?" Jiang Lai seized the loophole in his words: "To have dinner together with Lin Shutong here."

Shen Xun was instantly unable to refute.

"The company recently had a project up for bid; Shutong helped me a bit, and I promised to have dinner with her—this is quite normal." He looked nervously at Jiang Lai, afraid she wouldn't believe him.

Who would have thought Jiang Lai believed him, yet she asked: "Then you just left her alone to go home? That's not how you treat a benefactor."

"I said I'd wait for you downstairs."

Jiang Lai's expression changed, surprised that Shen Xun would let his beloved go home alone just to wait for her.

That's not like Shen Xun's style.

Just guilt.

"If you're going to send me home, you need to hurry; you don't need to coax Miss Lin, otherwise if she withdraws her help on this project, what will you do? I've resigned to stay home; you owe me ten thousand a month, plus those lessons, and future expenses for the child—all need money."

Shen Xun's heart suddenly settled at the future she described.

It seems Jiang Lai had no suspicions.

Jiang Lai trusted him.

She also hadn't forgotten about resigning to stay home, preparing for pregnancy, and becoming a full‑time wife.

Seeing Shen Xun's expression relax considerably, Jiang Lai couldn't help but let a faint cold smile curl her lips.

"The later stages don't really need her help; otherwise it would affect her future." Shen Xun closed the car door, walked to the driver's seat, and while fastening his seatbelt suddenly thought of something.

"You are now Ke Zhongyu's secretary; have you heard what project the Ke Clan is recently bidding on?"

Jiang Lai's hand paused.

Shen Xun wouldn't be thinking of having her steal the Ke Clan's project secrets, would he?

"Yes, the self‑developed chip project at A Da's research institute."

"Have you seen it?" A glint flashed in Shen Xun's eyes: "Since you're going to resign anyway, if possible, could you glance at their bid document—just the key parts?"

Jiang Lai thought to herself: As expected.

Shen Xun worried about Lin Shutong's future development, but didn't care that her stealing corporate secrets could land her in prison.

"I haven't participated; I can't access it."

"Ke Zhongyu didn't let you participate? He thinks highly of you, even planning to promote you to secretary the month you resign." Shen Xun recalled this and felt a fire burning inside.

Before the car started, he warned: "Jiang Lai, don't do anything that lets me down, otherwise Star Universe Technology will no longer donate to the Fuli Yuan where you grew up."

Jiang Lai met his eyes without humility or arrogance: "Star Universe Technology's donation to Fuli Yuan is your company's image need, a means of expanding brand recognition."

"We could donate to another Fuli Yuan; these years without me, relying on your paltry monthly stipend, that Fuli Yuan would have collapsed long ago." Shen Xun raised his voice, wanting her to face reality.

Jiang Lai looked out the window, ignoring him.

Shen Xun was irked by her green‑tinged clothes: "Don't wear this color again."

"Green is unlucky."

"A dirty heart sees everything as dirty." Jiang Lai thought to herself.

After seeing the person off to Cui Zhai, Shen Xun added once more: "Find a way to inquire about the Ke Clan's bid content, especially the key data; your university major is the same, so you should know what counts as key data."

……

Ke Family old residence.

Ms. Nian had just gotten out of the car when she saw her husband standing at the door, graceful and full of bearing, his gaze resentful.

Ke Fu's voice was a little low: "Ms. Nian, you went to give your friend's newly opened restaurant your patronage but didn't bring your own husband—what's the deal? Am I someone who can't be seen?"

Ke Zhongying saw the situation was bad and prepared to slip away.

"Chongying." Mother called out to her, "Give your brother a call and tell him to come back tonight; I have something to ask him."

"Okay, Mom, goodbye Mom, goodbye Dad." Ke Zhongying slipped away like oil on the soles of her feet, fleeing quickly.

After returning to her room, she immediately called her older brother.

"Brother, Mom told you to come back tonight; she has something to ask you."

"What is it?"

"How would I know? I'm not a worm in Mom's stomach; I'm just Mom's little padded jacket."

Ke Zhongyu grunted, then asked: "Where did you take Jiang Lai?"

"Brother, why are you so concerned about Sister Jiang Lai?" Ke Zhongying teased him on purpose.

As a result, the other party hung up.

"Hmph, men."

Ke Zhongying went to tinker with her own bionic robot, waiting for a suitable intelligent Crystal Core to appear.

Ten o'clock at night.

Ke Zhongyu returned to the old residence; his parents sat on the sofa, staring straight at him.

He took off his coat and sat opposite them.

"What are you two going to interrogate about today?"

"What have you been up to lately?" Ms. Nian pushed the freshly poured warm water over.

Ke Zhongyu cleared his throat and said: "I'm preparing to bid on the Self-developed Chip Project."

"I'm asking about your personal affairs." Ms. Nian gave him a sideways glance: "What are your intentions toward Jiang Lai?"

Ke Zhongyu stiffened slightly, denying: "There's nothing."

Ke Fu looked at his wife: "These words fully show he has feelings; father and son are of one heart."

Ke Zhongyu: "……"

Really his biological father.

"I know." Ms. Nian then asked her son: "Do you know Jiang Lai is Shen Xun's wife?"

Ke Fu's eyes widened instantly: "So you've been refusing blind dates all this time because you like someone else's wife?"

"This won't do." Ke Fu had a black line across his face: "Anything goes, but stealing another man's wife is unacceptable."

Ke Zhongyu took out his phone: "Dad, say it again."

Ke Fu repeated it again.

Upon thinking of something, Ms. Nian smacked her husband.

At the same time, Ke Zhongyu's voice sounded: "Remarriage, no objections?"

Ms. Nian rubbed her forehead: "……"

She just knew.

She looked at her son, gently and earnestly asking: "Zhongyu, Mom asks you again: what exactly are your feelings toward Jiang Lai?"
