Chapter 6
"So what? Are you going to make him divorce me?"
Jiang Lai asked back, hitting Lin Shutong right in the heart.
Lin Shutong had hinted several times over the past half month, but Shen Xun hadn't shown any intention of divorcing, yet he treated her as well as ever, even better, making her look like a mistress.
There's a saying: the one who isn't loved is the mistress.
If you really want to talk about it, it was Jiang Lai who interfered in her and Shen Xun's relationship.
In university, Shen Xun clearly loved her so much; everyone could see it.
It was just unexpected that because of a quarrel over going abroad, Shen Xun had randomly grabbed someone useless from the roadside to marry.
To her, it was simply an insult.
If she hadn't seen Jiang Lai in the hospital that day and Shen Xun hadn't introduced her as his wife, she would never have believed it.
How could Shen Xun marry a woman other than her?
After her repeated proofs, Shen Xun still loved her, even more than before.
Whatever she wanted, no matter how expensive, Shen Xun would buy it for her.
Whenever she had a situation, Shen Xun would rush to her side the first time.
Now he had even learned to cook red sugar water and wanted to cook noodles for her.
Shen Xun's money and love were hers.
Jiang Lai, this poor wretch, had nothing.
Except for a title.
A title that not many people knew about.
Now, she wanted to take back the title of Mrs. Shen.
Lin Shutong took a deep breath and smiled: "He will divorce you."
"Then thank you."
Jiang Lai couldn't wait for Shen Xun to sign the divorce agreement quickly. She couldn't breathe for even a second watching the two of them being affectionate under the same roof.
Lin Shutong never expected this reaction and froze in place.
Shen Xun came out of the kitchen with a bowl of hot red sugar water, meeting Jiang Lai's scrutinizing gaze, and his heart skipped a beat.
He called out: "Wife, you're awake..."
Lin Shutong heard this "wife" and felt sourness surging in her eyes.
"Shutong wasn't feeling well and didn't want to go to the hospital, so I brought her home."
Shen Xun only cared about explaining, not putting down the red sugar water in his hand.
Jiang Lai saw his fingers were a bit red from the heat.
The man in the kitchen for the first time didn't know how to use oven mitts.
Forget it, let them burn.
He deserved it.
As it turned out, Shen Xun wanted to pass this scalding red sugar water to her.
"I still have to cook noodles, you take the red sugar water to Shutong." The scalding bowl was placed in her hand without question.
It was so hot Jiang Lai almost let go.
Lin Shutong sat on the sofa, lips curled, saying: "Thank you, Mrs. Shen."
Jiang Lai handed the red sugar water over.
Lin Shutong reached out to take it.
Suddenly.
"Ah!"
Accompanied by a scream, the scalding red sugar water spilled.
It splashed entirely onto Lin Shutong's fair arm, and large blisters quickly surfaced.
Shen Xun rushed over to look, horrified, and turned to question Jiang Lai: "What is the meaning of this?"
Jiang Lai wanted to ask that herself.
"I..."
"It's not Jiang Lai's fault, I didn't hold it steady. A-Xun, don't blame her."
Lin Shutong was truly in pain, her eyes full of tears.
Shen Xun was heartbroken and scolded Jiang Lai: "How could you hand such a hot bowl directly to her? Couldn't you have put it on the table?"
"Didn't you hand it directly to me..."
"Do you know how important Shutong's safety is? She's working on a project that can't do without her!" Shen Xun glared coldly at Jiang Lai, "You'd better pray the doctor says she's fine and that it won't affect her work."
He bent down to pick up Lin Shutong and was about to go to the hospital.
Jiang Lai looked at the shards on the ground, the sticky red sugar water, and her own scalded fingers, swallowing the explanation she hadn't finished.
Shen Xun firmly believed she had deliberately splashed Lin Shutong with the red sugar water and brought Lin Shutong home from the hospital.
The guest room didn't house Shen Xi, but it housed Lin Shutong.
And she had to take care of her.
Jiang Lai's explanation was pale in front of the Shen family, so she didn't struggle anymore, saying she had to go to work, it was already eight in the morning.
Even if the research institute didn't need her to show up for anything recently, to avoid suspicion, she still went out as usual.
Shen Xun walked into the living room and said to Jiang Lai: "Ask for leave. This position of yours is insignificant to the company; it would be best to resign and stay home to be Mrs. Shen."
A wife with three thousand in living expenses?
Jiang Lai said: "Impossible."
Shen Xun: "You!"
The argument was a bit loud, and Lin Shutong, lying in the guest room, heard it and immediately spoke up to stop it: "A-Xun, please, don't fight because of me, I didn't hold it steady."
Hearing this, Shen Xun didn't argue about anything else, but insisted she ask for leave.
"You don't have to resign yet, but you must ask for leave for the next few days until Shutong's injury is healed. You caused the injury, so you have to take responsibility."
"I said it before, this has nothing to do with me. When I handed it over, she was holding it fine. How it spilled is something you should ask Lin Shutong, not me, right?"
Jiang Lai frowned and retorted.
What she got in return was Shen Xun questioning her again.
"Are you saying Shutong deliberately splashed boiling red sugar water on herself? She has very important scientific research work now! She has a strong career drive and no ulterior motives; it's impossible for her to do such a thing."
Jiang Lai laughed out of anger.
Important research work? She was just a name on the "Self-Developed Chip" project; she couldn't even touch the core data.
And no ulterior motives?
Truly, a woman's tears can make a man drunk.
Jiang Lai only blamed herself for being blind all these years, and she strode out the door.
Shen Xun followed closely, grabbing her wrist: "I said ask for leave, or resign."
Jiang Lai couldn't tell if he wanted her to ask for leave to take care of Lin Shutong, or if he selfishly wanted her to resign and come back to be a housewife.
Probably both.
"I said it's impossible."
"If you feel losing this job is a loss, I can compensate you."
"Compensate?" How could he compensate for four years of feelings?
"Yes, as long as you resign and stay home, I'll give you whatever you want."
Jiang Lai was now like a white rose with thorns, completely out of his control.
He instinctively rejected this feeling of losing control.
First Lin Shutong, then Jiang Lai.
"Fine, I want this house."
Jiang Lai suddenly thought of a way to get Shen Xun to sign the divorce agreement, and she raised her chin slightly.
"I want you to transfer this house to me. As long as you sign the transfer contract, I'll resign from the Ke Clan."
Shen Xun didn't care much about this three-bedroom apartment. Now that Shutong didn't lack research funding, he planned to buy a large flat in a while.
So, he agreed without hesitation.
"I'll have someone draft a transfer contract."
"I need to see it once it's drafted."
The force on her wrist loosened, and Jiang Lai pulled her hand out, rubbing it gently.
Shen Xun nodded: "Okay."
He called his assistant to handle it immediately.
Jiang Lai didn't say she was going to work, but followed Shen Xun to the company.
Shen Xun told her to wait in the car.
Before long, the assistant brought the transfer contract. Jiang Lai read it page by page carefully and looked up, saying: "I want to watch him sign it himself. I won't go up; he can come down."
The assistant said okay.
"Wait, bring a stapler down; I'm afraid it will scatter."
The assistant nodded again.
After the assistant walked away, leaving her alone in the car, Jiang Lai took out the page of the divorce agreement that needed the man's signature from her bag and replaced the page that needed a signature in the transfer contract.
Shen Xun arrived at the underground garage, holding a stapler, with a gold fountain pen in his suit pocket.
This fountain pen was the first gift she had given Shen Xun.
Four years later, he was still using it.
Jiang Lai stared at the fountain pen in his pocket, distracted.
"Stapler." Shen Xun opened the car door and sat in.
The underground garage was dimly lit. Jiang Lai lowered her eyes, carefully stapled the contract together, turned to the place where he needed to sign, and handed it over.
The contract had been drafted by the assistant, and he had already read it, so he signed his name and the date without a hint of suspicion.
He signed it.
Back then, Shen Xun had used the pen she gave him to sign the marriage registration form; today, he had used the same fountain pen to sign the divorce agreement. How could that not be considered a beginning and an end?
At this moment, the divorce agreement took effect.
In a month, they would no longer be husband and wife.
Jiang Lai held the contract in her hand, not crying.
She would never shed another tear for Shen Xun, for this marriage.
In the dim light, Shen Xun couldn't see the relief on her face, urging her about the resignation.
"I did what I promised. I'll have my assistant take you to the Ke Clan; resign immediately."
Jiang Lai nodded: "Okay."
She wasn't really working at the Ke Clan anyway; just pretending to walk around the Ke Clan building was enough.
She remembered the HR manager had recorded her face, but her access was limited to that.
Shen Xun's car was a four-million-dollar Bentley. She hadn't ridden in it many times, and this was the first time he had sent his assistant to take her.
The maple leaves by the roadside were as red as fire, and when the wind blew, they fell all over the ground with a rustle.
Jiang Lai turned her head to look out the window, her gaze unfocused.
The divorce agreement was on her lap.
The assistant driving the car observed her several times through the rearview mirror, always feeling that the President's wife was abnormally calm today, especially since her hand kept touching her ring finger, as if she wanted to take the ring off.
"Ma'am, we're here."
"Okay." Jiang Lai put the agreement into her bag, "You can go back first."
"Okay, ma'am. Remember to tell President Shen after you finish your business."
"I know."
Under the assistant's gaze, Jiang Lai swiped her face to enter the Ke Clan building. Back then, her mentor's wife had personally taken her to the HR manager, Rong Jie, for her position, so "resigning" naturally meant going to find Rong Jie.
Before she could ask the front desk, she saw Rong Jie holding a coffee.
Xu Rong also saw her, slightly surprised, then walked straight over, asking with a full face of smiles: "Little Jiang is here!"
"Rong Jie."
"Eh, let's go to the office to talk about anything!"
Jiang Lai was a person placed there by the Ke President's second aunt, so she couldn't be neglected.
While speaking, Jiang Lai noticed a gaze watching her from not far away. Following the line of sight, she only saw a slender profile.
A bit familiar.
But she couldn't remember where she had seen it.
