Chapter 60: Jiang Lai Scolds Shen Xun
Shen Xun was still planning to say something, but Jiang Lai was anxious about the courier matter, saying: "Let's talk later, I'll ask Shen Xi."
"Don't worry, it's definitely just placed somewhere you didn't see; Xiao Xi wouldn't mess with your things."
"It's actually Shen Xi who would mess with her things."
Jiang Lai was tired of saying these things over the years, and she was also tired of hearing Shen Xun's words, so she simply hung up.
Shen Xun, suddenly hung up on, stared, frowned, and thought: Jiang Lai actually hung up on him?
He got up, grabbed his coat, left the office, and didn't forget to send Jiang Lai a message about what he wanted to eat tonight.
Lately he either eats out or at the company, finding it tasteless, each time just taking a few bites to get by.
Tonight he can finally have a proper meal.
Jiang Lai ignored his message and called Shen Xi.
First call, hung up.
Second call, hung up again.
Third call, the other end finally picked up slowly.
"Oh, Jiang Lai, you actually took the initiative to call me?"
It was completely a provocative tone.
Jiang Lai immediately affirmed: "You took my package."
"'It was me who took it, so what?' Shen Xi admitted bluntly, 'The orphanage sends you useless stuff every year, and you keep giving it to us—who would eat that rural junk? We don't even know if it's clean or not. This year, don't send us any more; we have to sneakily throw it away, or my brother will scold us if he finds out.'"
Jiang Lai's pupils shrank, and she coldly asked: "You all threw them away?"
"What else?"
"'If you don't want them, give them back to me.' Jiang Lai gritted her teeth, knowing it was useless to say this now—it's been years—she took a deep breath: 'Return my things.'"
"'Want them? Come get them yourself.' Shen Xi laughed on the other end, 'But I'm not free today; whenever I have time, let me know. Also don't think about telling my brother, or I'll tear up those drawings and letters the little brats made for you.'"
Obviously Shen Xi had already opened and looked at them.
Jiang Lai questioned: "What exactly do you want? If you want me to divorce your brother, you should persuade him, not threaten me."
"'Tch, if my brother wanted to divorce you, would it even be up to us to say? It's annoying—clearly my brother likes Shutong sister, so why won't he divorce you?'"
"'He's sick.' Jiang Lai muttered under her breath."
"'You dare badmouth my brother behind his back? Believe it or not, I'll tell my brother.'"
"'By the way, also tell me about you taking my package.'"
Shen Xi didn't dare, saying: "I don't want to argue with you; if you want these things back, wait until I'm in a good mood, then I'll contact you."
Beep.
The other end hung up.
Jiang Lai sent Shen Xi a message: "【Don't touch my things; if there's even the slightest damage, don't even think about having money to study abroad.】"
Shen Xi: "【Jiang Lai, why don't you just die!!!】"
Shen Xi: "【I just knew my brother's money is in your hands; you can't stand to see me do well!!!】"
Even through the screen, you could feel her anger.
Shen Xi: "【I wouldn't touch those things; who knows if they have bacteria or viruses!】"
Jiang Lai curled her lips.
Who cares about being misunderstood; as long as the goal is achieved.
Making sure nothing was lost, she finally relaxed, looking at bag after bag of stuff before her, suddenly not knowing where to put them.
Jiang Lai called Professor Cheng to ask for the address; the sublet rent was handed over, Professor Cheng didn't refuse, his only request being that she love and care for the house, keep it clean, since it's been empty for years and covered in dust.
Jiang Lai wasn't pretentious; she immediately said thanks, preparing to carry everything to the doorway and then take a taxi.
Just as she moved the stuff out of the elevator, Shen Xun returned.
The two collided right at the elevator entrance.
At that moment, Jiang Lai wore a baseball cap, a mask, and an oversized black jacket; Shen Xun didn't recognize her.
Jiang Lai merely paused briefly, and didn't call out to him.
After four years of marriage, Shen Xun had passed by her multiple times without recognizing her; saying it out loud, Jiang Lai felt it was a joke.
Just like their marriage, from beginning to end it's been a joke.
Shen Xun stepped into the elevator, about to press the door-close button, when he suddenly felt that the figure that had just brushed past him was somewhat familiar.
Like Jiang Lai.
He wasn't certain either.
Although Jiang Lai usually dresses plainly, she wouldn't dress like this; the jacket clearly belonged to another man, a middle-aged man.
But it really looked like her.
Just as the elevator doors were about to close, Shen Xun pressed the open button again and strode out.
"Jiang Lai?"
Jiang Lai's body stiffened; that very moment of hesitation made Shen Xun suspect her even more.
Shen Xun walked over with long strides, snatched off her hat and pulled down her mask.
"How come you're dressed like this?"
His gaze lingered on the oversized jacket, then he immediately questioned: "Whose clothes are you wearing?"
"An elder."
"Besides Professor Wang and Housekeeper Deng, which elder do you have?' Shen Xun questioned, 'Housekeeper Deng? No way.'
"A teacher you've never met.' Jiang Lai kept holding the things, the plastic bags cutting into her palms, making them red."
Shen Xun stared at her eyes for a while, saw no flaw, then turned his gaze to the things in her hands, his tone softening considerably.
"You haven't been back for days, and the house is full of trash?"
"The things Dean Mom sent had just been humiliated by Shen Xi, and now Shen Xun called them trash; Jiang Lai ignored him and continued to carry them past him."
"Shen Xun thought she was angry he hadn't helped, and reached out to help her carry them."
"I'll throw it out; did you buy vegetables?"
"Jiang Lai dodged his hand and explained word by word: 'This isn't trash; it's the specialty Dean Mom sent me. This year I'm not leaving any for you, so you won't have to throw it away.'"
"Shen Xun looked slightly surprised: 'You know? My parents didn't mean to; they just aren't used to it.'"
"'Hn.' Jiang Lai didn't want to waste words with him: 'I'm leaving first.'"
"'I'm already back, where do you still want to go?' Shen Xun grabbed her arm, 'I haven't finished work, but I came back specially to have a good meal with you, and you're thinking of going to Cui Zhai?'"
"'Jiang Lai, do you even have this family in your eyes?'"
"Jiang Lai turned her head: 'That's something I should be asking you.'"
"'If I didn't have this family in my heart, how could I drop work and rush back?'"
"'Because you found that outside food isn't as good as home-cooked.' Jiang Lai quickly answered him, 'But home-cooked meals can get boring; occasionally I still want to go out for something different and fresh. After eating out for a while, I start missing that home-cooked taste.'"
"Shen Xun had never seen Jiang Lai speak so sharply and sternly, and he faintly sensed there was more to her words."
"He pursed his lips and explained: 'You can't compare to an outside five-star chef, but my stomach is still used to eating what you cook; what you make is suitable.'"
"Jiang Lai smirked."
"This is the reason Shen Xun won't divorce himself."
"Suitable."
"Only her cooking suits her appetite."
"She is also only suited to being a hardworking housewife at home."
"'Moreover, lately it's not that I don't come home to eat; it's that you're not home, Jiang Lai. Do you know how many days you haven't come back?'"
"Jiang Lai countered: 'How many days?'"
"Shen Xun opened his mouth but couldn't answer."
"'I'm busy, I don't have time to count exactly how many days.' He grabbed Jiang Lai's hand and forcibly pulled her back, 'You can't go anywhere tonight; don't forget you're a married person with a family.'"
