Chapter 63: She Missed Out

~7 min read 1,328 words

"No," Jiang Lai turned the phone over to cover it, "It's my first time as a secretary; if there's any place I do poorly, Ke Zhongyu will point it out."

Shen Xun felt Jiang Lai was somewhat speaking for Ke Zhongyu; Ke Zhongyu was famously aloof and harsh.

"You were never suited for work; you're better off at home," Shen Xun said, "Eldest Miss Ke also said your cooking is delicious."

Ke Zhongying snapped her head around, her gaze lingering, "President Shen really takes things out of context. I said Sister Jiang Lai's cooking is tasty, you said I want her to stay home and cook. If you keep conveying it like that, it wouldn't surprise me if Star Universe Technology went bankrupt someday."

The siblings were equally cutting, yet he couldn't afford to offend anyone; Shen Xun smiled, "Eldest Miss Ke has misunderstood."

"You misunderstand me first," Ke Zhongying turned to Jiang Lai, "Are you really leaving?"

Shen Xun looked at Jiang Lai.

Jiang Lai nodded, "Hmm, there's still a little over half a month."

Shen Xun, smiling, picked a piece of fish for Jiang Lai.

Jiang Lai lowered her head to look.

Ominous.

Jiang Lai looked at the red wine in Ke Zhongying's goblet, knowing her tolerance, and warned, "Drink less."

Ke Zhongying giggled, "It doesn't matter."

Then she asked, "Why are there no dishes you like here?"

Jiang Lai was startled, "How do you know what dishes I like?"

"Spicy ones," Ke Zhongying whispered near her ear, "My brother told me."

Shen Xun and Xie Yongsi only heard the first part.

Xie Yongsi explained, "Our brother Shen's stomach isn't great; he always eats rather lightly."

Shen Xun nodded, "Right."

"You even get it right," Ke Zhongying sneered, "Sister Jiang Lai, for you, doesn't make the flavors she likes, and you take it for granted."

Angered, she gulped two mouthfuls of red wine.

After two sips, her face flushed and her gaze became dazed.

Xie Yongsi exclaimed in surprise, "Eldest Miss Ke's tolerance is that poor?"

Jiang Lai nodded worriedly, leaned in a bit to sit, and soon Ke Zhongying rested her head on Jiang Lai's shoulder, both hands tightly hugging her arm.

"Sister Jiang Lai, you have to sleep with me tonight."

"I don't care; you must sleep with me tonight!" Ke Zhongying's mind was full of taking Sister Jiang Lai away, hugging the fragrant sister at night, and she laughed foolishly at the thought.

Jiang Lai went along, "Ke Zhongying is drunk; I'll take her back, you all keep drinking."

Shen Xun rose as well, "Call to have the Ke family's driver come pick her up."

Ke Zhongying said drowsily, "My phone's dead; don't let Mom and Dad know, they won't let me drink, shh."

She pressed a finger to her lips, without both hands hugging Jiang Lai, nearly lost her balance and fell off the chair.

Jiang Lai hurriedly steadied her, "Okay, I'll take you to the apartment, without telling them."

"Thank you, Sister Jiang Lai." At that moment Ke Zhongying was like a well‑behaved sweet child, and Jiang Lai instantly thought of the clingy kids at the Fuli Yuan she visited each time, a gentle smile spreading on her face.

Shen Xun was momentarily dazzled by her smile.

He thought, if Jiang Lai gave birth to their child, would she become this gentle too?

Nevertheless, he still didn't want Jiang Lai to take Ke Zhongying.

Shen Xun: "We can ask Mr. Ke to pick her up."

Jiang Lai: "He's not in A City."

Shen Xun's gaze darkened slightly, "How do you know?"

Jiang Lai was speechless, "My daily job is handling his schedule."

Shen Xun only then realized.

Xie Yongsi's gaze flickered between the two, thinking Shen Xun's reaction to the matter between Jiang Lai and the boss was excessive.

Shen Xun corrected himself, "We'll escort together."

Jiang Lai was surprised, looking at Xie Yongsi, "Your brother is still here."

Xie Yongsi: "It's fine, sister‑in‑law, I'm not drunk; I can call a designated driver to go back."

"I don't want him to drive," Ke Zhongying glared at Shen Xun, "If a man takes two women home, people will misunderstand; I'm afraid that Lin will cause trouble. Though she wouldn't dare act rashly in front of me, being thought we have a connection with him is bad."

The usually gentle and courteous Shen Xun's face darkened, "Miss Ke, Jiang Lai is my wife; we already have a relationship."

"Tch," Ke Zhongying made a dismissive look, as if saying, "I don't listen; what can you do to me?"

Indeed, no one here could do anything to her.

Jiang Lai helped Ke Zhongying to her feet and said to Shen Xun, "I'll just take her back; you all keep eating."

"Come back early; I'll be waiting at home," Shen Xun stood up to open the door for her.

Jiang Lai pretended not to hear that sentence.

She didn't believe Shen Xun would wait for her.

Xie Yongsi, also skeptical, asked impatiently as soon as the door closed, "Brother Shen, you wouldn't have developed feelings for sister‑in‑law, would you?"

Shen Xun lifted his gaze.

"Hearing that sister‑in‑law has some connection with the superior makes me uneasy; you both acknowledge sister‑in‑law's role and still wait for her to come back," Xie Yongsi enumerated, "Even though Lin Shutong has been back for so long, you gave Lin Shutong countless valuable things, yet never thought of divorcing her to marry her. Is it really only because sister‑in‑law takes good care of the house?"

Shen Xun's lowered fingers curled slightly.

"I married her; I have a responsibility toward her."

"Just responsibility?" The slightly drunk Xie Yongsi couldn't help but sneer, then asked, "Brother Shen, are you really going to wait tonight?"

"She hasn't eaten much," Shen Xun said, looking at Jiang Lai's bowl and chopsticks; the bowl still held half a bowl of rice and the piece of fish he had picked for her.

Every time he served Jiang Lai a dish, she would eat it immediately, finishing it completely.

This time, it's the Ke Family Eldest Miss being immature; she ate a lot of each dish herself, but didn't let Jiang Lai have a proper meal.

In the car.

The driver had been waiting for a while: 'Miss, Miss Jiang.'

Ke Zhongying pushed Jiang Lai into the car, then quickly got in herself, and then said to the driver: 'Quick, quick, quick, hurry up and drive!'

She was a bit drunk, but not very drunk.

After the car drove a bit farther, Ke Zhongying slumped onto the seat, turned her head and asked for credit: 'How about it? I said leave it to me, I guarantee I can handle it!'

Jiang Lai chuckled: 'Thank you.'

'It's fine, just a pity I didn't finish your dishes, but I ate a bit of each, so it's not a loss.' Ke Zhongying rubbed her stomach, 'I see you didn't eat much; I'll have someone send you a late-night snack to my place.'

Jiang Lai looked at her: 'Can you still eat?'

'I can eat a little bit, mainly you should eat more, I want to order something extra spicy for you.' Ke Zhongying fiddled with her phone, getting the order wrong several times, then handed the phone to Jiang Lai.

Just then, a person noted as Huang Zhangxiong sent a message.

【You took my treasured wine in exchange for Jiang Lai's cooking?】

It seems Huang Zhangxiong is Ke Zhongyu.

After Jiang Lai finished ordering, she handed the phone back, saying: 'Just now a message from Boss Ke popped up; he seems angry because you took his wine.'

'So be it, he has a whole wall of hidden wine; I just moved his wine, not his wife.' Ke Zhongying didn't care and picked up the phone.

The phone popped up another message.

Huang Zhangxiong: 【She lost out.】

Ke Zhongying's hand trembled; it looks like she might have messed with her brother's future wife...
