Chapter 122: Just Say I'm Dead
"President Fu, Xi Xi is used to talking nonsense all the time…" she said, losing confidence as she spoke.
No matter how you hear it, this sounds like a forced explanation.
Lu Xiwán let out a light sigh and simply gave up, "I'll keep an eye on Xi Xi and stop her from talking nonsense again."
"Since President Fu has returned, Yao Yao is yours to take care of."
When she finished speaking, Lu Xiwán turned to leave, but her wrist was suddenly clasped by a warm, large hand.
Lu Xiwán turned back, puzzled.
"President Fu, anything else?"
After a half‑hour of silence, Fu Sijue suddenly squeezed out, "I... is there anything to eat in the kitchen?"
"What?"
Lu Xiwán was bewildered by his nonsensical question.
Assuming he was urging Yao Yao to eat, she said softly, "Yao Yao's meals are normal today; it's already past midnight, so it's not appropriate to feed him more."
Upon hearing that, Fu Sijue's face showed a rare hint of embarrassment.
"I haven't eaten yet."
"Aren't you with Yun Ruojin…"
"She said she had business for me; after I heard her, I left."
"I won't dine with her…"
Fu Sijue's explanation came suddenly and urgently, and his gaze at Lu Xiwán carried a tension he himself hadn't noticed.
It seemed... as if he was terrified she would get angry.
Seeing his look, Lu Xiwán froze for a moment.
A choke rose in her chest, and the dull ache lingered for a long time.
Such a gaze was one she had once longed for immensely.
She never expected that the unfulfilled longing from years ago would be granted so easily when she appeared in another identity.
"There's nothing left to eat in the kitchen; I'll go make you a bowl of noodles."
With that, Lu Xiwán silently entered the kitchen.
Her movements were swift and decisive, while deep down she mocked her former self for being so foolish.
In just a dozen minutes or so, Lu Xiwán emerged from the kitchen carrying a steaming bowl of noodles.
Fu Sijue sat upright at the table, cradling Yao Yao in his arms, speaking softly.
When she approached, a big pair and a small pair of eyes turned toward her together.
The scene was unusually warm.
It was just like the hopeful longing she felt when she discovered she was pregnant years ago.
Only, things have changed and people are no longer the same.
She no longer needs it either.
Lu Xiwán steadied the turmoil within her, casually pushed the noodles onto President Fu's plate, and said, "If there's nothing else, President Fu, I'll go rest now."
With that, she gave Fu Sijue no chance to reply and hurried upstairs.
Meanwhile, Fu Sijue, still seated at the table, kept his gaze fixed on Lu Xiwán's resolute back.
His thin lips barely opened, the words he wanted to say stuck in his throat.
He wanted her to stay.
At least to stay and finish this bowl of noodles with him, to hear his praise.
But in what capacity could he keep her?
And in what role could he compliment her cooking…
Fu Sijue's lingering irritation from the afternoon resurfaced, the sour sting in his heart unbearably painful.
With each breath, the scent of Yangchun Noodles filled the air.
It was refreshing, like her smile by the poolside under the sun.
…
Early the next morning.
Yun Ruojin pressed her throbbing head and quickly got up.
She did her makeup, left the house, and headed straight for the Fu Family Old Residence.
Since Fu Sijue refused to cooperate, she could only start by targeting the Fu Family patriarch.
