Chapter 361: Just Like an Old Friend
347 wanted to change the fever patch on Lu Xiwan's forehead, but she grabbed his hand tightly and kept talking.
The sick Lu Xiwan clung like a child, muttering to herself, as if she had lost the ability to perceive any outside sound.
I'll go find a doctor.
Remember to bring me the fried chicken from the stand at the school gate, I love it. Lu Xiwan's vision was blurry, and Fu Sijue before her eyes suddenly turned back into how they looked when they first met.
Lu Xiwan instinctively gave him an order.
347's arm went stiff; he carefully pried open Lu Xiwan's hand that was gripping his arm.
You're sick.
I'm not. This time Lu Xiwan understood, she stubbornly shook her head, trying to prove she was fine, but even a slight movement would pull at her wound, and she sucked in a breath of cold air.
347 turned his head to look outside; at night Chris had left only two people guarding the door, and the doctor was next door.
347 looked at Lu Xiwan again, a fleeting hesitation crossing his eyes.
After hesitating a few seconds, 347 gently placed his hand on Lu Xiwan's forehead, while his other hand quickly moved her grip away from his hand.
He quickly got up and walked to the door, saying, "Go call the doctor; she's started running a fever."
The doctor had said her wounds could still become infected, so we can't let our guard down now.
Having received Chris's order, the doctor didn't dare close her eyes, threw on a coat, and came running over in a fluster.
After examining Lu Xiwan, the doctor told 347, "It's just that after her injury she came into contact with saline, causing some inflammation; there's no need to worry too much."
Although the doctor said that, 347 still wasn't reassured and followed her outside.
Besides taking medicine, is there anything else we can do?
The doctor lifted her eyes, looking at 347 with deep meaning, "This isn't a hospital after all; I can only do my best to reduce her fever, and I'll give you some painkillers… Don't be too concerned about her."
Anyone with eyes could see that 347's concern for Lu Xiwan had long surpassed mere protection.
The doctor sighed, then heavily patted 347's shoulder, "People like us shouldn't hope for anything else."
He couldn't say anything else, just dropped that line and hurried back to his room.
347 stood outside in a daze, staring at the doctor's room, repeatedly chewing over what she had just said.
The two guards at the door couldn't hold back either; they came over and dragged 347 inside.
"As for the person lying in that room, don't even mention that she's already married." The one who spoke first trailed off.
They are merely knives in Chris's hand; how could they develop other feelings?
If the boss found out, 347's life would be forfeit; as fellow subordinates making a living under Chris, they really couldn't bear to watch him make mistake after mistake.
Another person chimed in, "Even if she weren't married, our statuses are worlds apart from hers."
347 looked at them puzzled, "What are you talking about?"
He didn't understand what they were saying, and walked over to the bedside to sit down again.
"I only listen to the boss; the boss told me to protect her well, and nothing must happen to her on my watch."
That explanation was a perfectly good excuse; the two at the door felt slightly embarrassed and rubbed the tips of their noses.
Indeed, they had all undergone strict training before taking duty; it's unlikely 347 could develop feelings for Lu Xiwan in just two days.
Could it really be that they're overthinking things?
The first ray of morning sunlight slipped through the curtain gap and struck Lu Xiwan's eyes; she shifted uneasily, and as she tried to sit up she felt a sharp pain shoot through her body.
She struggled to open her eyes, turned her head slightly, and saw 347 sitting upright in a chair, properly composed, with a fever patch still on her forehead.
"Water…" Lu Xiwan's voice was hoarse, rough as if scraped by a wire over stone.
347 seemed not to have slept either; he quickly rose and brought her a cup of water.
He carefully held the cup to give Lu Xiwan water; her throat's dryness eased, and she was finally able to think about other things.
"You didn't sleep at all last night?"
Lu Xiwan's head still hurt a bit; she only remembered that she had a fever last night, and 347 had been by her side taking care of her.
Lu Xiwan looked at 347 curiously; despite not sleeping all night, he showed not a trace of fatigue.
Could it be that they're all humanoid robots manufactured by paradise?
347 didn't answer that question; he simply gazed silently at Lu Xiwan.
"I'm hungry." Lu Xiwan suddenly said, and her stomach growled in agreement.
Because of her wounds, Lu Xiwan had no appetite yesterday; only this morning did she finally feel hungry.
347 had anticipated Lu Xiwan would say that, and once again offered his programmed reply.
"Breakfast is at eight every morning; it's now seven forty."
"But I'm hungry right now." Lu Xiwan pursed her lips.
She was just venting; everyone in the villa knew her status, and she herself hadn't thought a single sentence could get her an early meal.
Unexpectedly, 347 got up, went outside, spoke to the two people waiting out there, and soon returned.
"What did you go out for?" Lu Xiwan looked at 347 curiously.
"Have them ask the boss for instructions."
These people are really tired; even having a meal requires asking someone else for permission. Lu Xiwan muttered to herself.
Soon she realized that she now belonged to "these people" as well.
Boredly watching the clouds outside, just as Lu Xiwan counted her 1,432nd sheep, a bowl of steaming mushroom chicken congee was brought before her.
Lu Xiwan couldn't sit up, so she could only be fed spoonful by spoonful by 347.
The tiny silver spoon looked especially delicate in 347's hand, and Lu Xiwan let out a little "pfft" laugh.
"You should have the maid feed me." Lu Xiwan kindly reminded him.
347 always felt like he wanted to bend that spoon.
From Lu Xiwan's perspective, she could see 347's other hand clench slightly, as if he were restraining himself from striking someone.
Lu Xiwán knew he wouldn't lay a hand on her, and she asked, "Why do you all wear glasses every day? Can you see clearly at night like that?"
Lu Xiwán's questions became increasingly outrageous, and even 347 answered each one.
"No, these are specially made night-vision goggles."
Lu Xiwán nodded thoughtfully; given Chris's extravagant and inhumane behavior, it's also quite normal that they weren't issued a night-vision device.
"Why do you have a sandalwood scent on you?" Lu Xiwán suddenly asked, a faint smile playing on her lips.
Without waiting for 347 to answer, Lu Xiwán went on speaking to herself.
"You're very like him, but you're not him."
Lu Xiwán's voice sank a little, and her eyes also held a hint of longing.
