Chapter 13: Uncle Chen will at most have someone beat you up
Kid, with that car you drive, I doubt you can even get through Qingqing's front gate. The old-timer Zhang from the long-established rice noodle shop saw Chen Yang park his Jetta at the shop entrance, and he held a pessimistic attitude toward the future development of his and Liu Qingqing's relationship.
If I can't get in, then I won't! Chen Yang acted nonchalant. He recalled yesterday when he drove the Jetta to pick up Liu Qingqing, her reaction was undisguised disdain. This was just picking her up off-campus; if he drove the car to the dormitory building, he estimated he wouldn't even see her face.
It seems he was a bit hasty about the car purchase. Driving a civilian car to pursue a rich young lady, he can only live in a fairy-tale movie world.
Uncle Zhang gave Chen Yang a thumbs-up, smiling and teasing: "Kid, I hope that when you someday meet Qingqing's dad, you can be just as individualistic."
"What kind of person is my future father-in-law?" Chen Yang, upon hearing Uncle Zhang mention Liu Qingqing's dad, also became curious. Actually, he had seen the family photo at Liu Qingqing's house; her father is quite handsome, but his demeanor is very aloof and stern. He doesn't look easy to get along with.
"A really unpleasant person, not much different from Qingqing's grandfather?" Uncle Zhang seemed not fond of mentioning the Liu father and son; his evaluation was obviously tinged with personal emotion.
Chen Yang sensed there was a story behind it. Uncle Zhang didn't say, and he felt awkward to ask further. Just that Liu Qingqing wasn't there, today the rice noodles always felt off.
He wondered if he was being a bit lowly, having been reborn, what's there to talk about love!
Self-inflicted troubles!
And Lin Wei, this woman truly doesn't let her rest easy. Kindly helping her, giving her a ride, ends up harming her own affairs. Truly, good intentions go unrewarded.
However, without Liu Qingqing clinging to his side, Chen Yang could actually focus on handling the supermarket renovation.
Chen Yang drove his car to the sales office of Sunshine Garden Community. The staff, seeing Chen Yang step out of his Jetta, were a bit surprised but still politely ushered their benefactors to Zhao Xiaoli's office.
Hearing that Chen Yang was looking for a renovation company, Zhao Xiaoli quickly made several calls. Within about half an hour, several cars arrived outside the sales office: a BMW, a Santana, and a Wuling minivan.
Zhao Xiaoli asked about Chen Yang's requirements, then called each of the renovation companies' representatives to the office for interviews. After the interviews, however, Zhao Xiaoli only recommended to Chen Yang the company that arrived in the Wuling minivan.
Chen Yang asked Zhao Xiaoli why she chose that company. Her answer: familiar, inexpensive, and down-to-earth in their work.
Chen Yang again asked: "Since you were already prepared to recommend their company to me from the start, why bother with such a complicated procedure?"
Zhao Xiaoli smiled and explained: "If I don't let you learn about the other companies, my recommendation lacks persuasiveness."
Chen Yang felt that Zhao Xiaoli was someone who gets things done, a pity she's a subordinate of Liu Shijie.
Not easy to dig up!
Over the next few days, aside from eating and sleeping, Chen Yang spent all his time supervising the renovation at Sunshine Garden Community. In between, Lin Wei called several times, but he didn't answer.
Having eaten the door-slammed rebuff at Liu Qingqing's place, he must let Lin Wei also taste that flavor.
However, Lin Wei is truly persistent; she actually came in person to Sunshine Garden.
She wore the uniform of Xingcheng University, white sneakers, and as soon as she appeared, she drew a lot of attention.
"Chen Yang, I didn't expect it, but your investment eye is still pretty good!"
Chen Yang saw her eyes fixed on the houses of Sunshine Garden, and inexplicably felt a bit nervous.
"What are you saying? I don't understand."
"Cut the act, Qingqing has already spilled everything—you bought a unit of housing here. Big move!" Lin Wei pointed to the six towering buildings in the community and asked Chen Yang: "Where? Won't you take me on a tour?"
Chen Yang was somewhat speechless. Liu Qingqing ignoring him for days was fine, but she actually secretly met with Lin Wei. With her simple-minded brain, going up against the future county party secretary—she's bound to be manipulated in no time.
"The hardworking Chairman Lin personally came to your door—I doubt it's just as simple as looking at a house." Chen Yang eyed Lin Wei warily, always feeling a plot was drawing near.
"My husband bought this place; as his wife, I naturally should come take a look. If we ever divorce, I need to know what portion belongs to me."
"I've already consulted; after marriage, the woman can get half of the property."
"…"
Seeing Lin Wei wearing a smug look at himself, Chen Yang decided to ignore. He reminded her:
"Lin Wei, we're just in a fake marriage!"
"We got the certificate; our relationship is legally protected. Right?"
Lin Wei pulled out the marriage certificate from her pocket and waved it in front of Chen Yang's eyes.
Chen Yang remained unmoved. He hadn't signed a prenuptial agreement initially because he knew Lin Wei wasn't after money. She surely had other motives.
"If there's something, just say it straight; between us there's really no need to beat around the bush."
"Really?" Lin Wei had intended to tease Chen Yang, but didn't expect him not to take the bait. That caught her off guard.
From the time they got their certificate, she felt Chen Yang was no longer the familiar village boy. He inexplicably won a big prize, and without hesitation invested in a high-end commercial property with huge potential. On him, there was an added sense of mystery she couldn't fathom.
"Qingqing came to see me a few days ago, hoping we could end our relationship early. I can understand her feelings."
"However, Chen Bing ran into trouble. His old man opposed his being with Zhong Lin and took back the house they lived in."
"They have nowhere to live, and you're aiming at me?" Chen Yang instantly grasped the crux of the issue, feeling a bit annoyed. The grudge from her scheming him a few days ago hasn't been settled, and now she's coming up with ideas about his house. She really doesn't treat him as an outsider!
"For the sake of your Qingqing, what's the big deal about sacrificing a house?"
Chen Yang thought: "It's not your house, so of course you don't feel sorry."
He thought it over and decided to agree to Lin Wei's request. After all, for future development in Xingcheng, having a friend like Chen Bing with background isn't a bad thing. And Lin Wei will owe him a favor.
However, he also kept a trick up his sleeve.
"The house can be let him stay, no matter how long. But I need to remind you: if the day comes that Old Master Chen investigates, you must not sell me out."
"Rest assured, just because you're the Lin family's son-in-law, Uncle Chen will at most have someone beat you up—he won't maim you."
Chen Yang gave Lin Wei a sideways glance. He remembered this woman never liked joking before—cold at school, and even more impartial in official circles. How did she suddenly change…
By the way, does the Chen family patriarch really just have someone beat him up? This is a major matter concerning the Chen family's lineage continuation!
And Lin Wei's father. In a previous life, Zhang Jun was beaten by him and lay in the hospital for three days. Faced with Chen Yang, who married her daughter without permission, his anger would likely rise several levels.
The more he thought, the more Chen Yang felt a headache.
