Chapter 164: Mother-in-Law Urges for a Baby
Old Master Lin originally wanted to find a satisfactory job for his old subordinate's son, but Chen Yang actually entrusted the important position of financial manager at Old Hundred Meat Industry Co., Ltd. to Du Yue'e.
This really put Old Master Lin in a difficult spot. On one side is his old subordinate's son; on the other is his own granddaughter-in-law—both are dear to him. If discussing closeness, the granddaughter-in-law side carries even more weight.
Moreover, as Lin family's granddaughter-in-law, Du Yue'e comes from an unremarkable family background and has relatively limited education; this has always been a concern for Old Master Lin, who feels that mentioning her in front of outsiders brings a bit of loss of face.
Now Du Yue'e has become the financial manager at Old Hundred Meat Industry Co., Ltd. From now on, whenever he mentions this granddaughter-in-law to his old friends, his own reputation will gain a bit of luster.
So, Old Master Lin truly cannot oppose this matter.
"Chen Yang, do you have any better vacant positions over there?"
Chen Yang understood Old Master Lin's meaning and said to him, "Grandfather, you need to first clarify with the person concerned what exactly he wants—whether he aims to undertake a great career or just wants an idle post to get by. Anyway, since you've spoken up, I will certainly be able to arrange the job."
Old Master Lin stood up satisfied. Since Chen Yang had already given his promise, he could now explain things on his end.
"Dad, won't you have a meal before leaving?" Hu Qingwan saw Old Master Lin about to leave and quickly rose as well.
"No!" Old Master Lin waved his hand and told Hu Qingwan, "My old subordinate is still waiting for my letter at home!"
Hu Qingwan laughed, "Just give him a call directly; why make an extra trip?"
Old Master Lin naturally couldn't tell Hu Qingwan that he still had a banquet to attend. He also feared being managed by his daughter-in-law like his son. So he said, "Some things can't be made clear over the phone. I'd better go in person."
Seeing his determination to leave, Hu Qingwan could only say to Lin Feng, "Feng'er, please see grandfather off."
"Okay!" Lin Feng agreed while extending his right hand toward Chen Yang with a grin.
Chen Yang immediately understood Lin Feng's meaning, promptly pulling the car key for the Range Rover from his pocket and handing it over.
"Brother, if you really like this car, just keep driving it! I'll buy a new one later."
"Won't that be too showy…?" Lin Feng felt a bit embarrassed; last time Lin Jianguo had warned him not to drive to the Public Security Bureau.
"What's there to fear!" Chen Yang said, "My money is all legally earned and can withstand organizational scrutiny."
"Then I won't stand on ceremony!" Lin Feng genuinely liked the Range Rover, happily taking the car key to see Old Master Lin off.
After they left, Hu Qingwan looked at Chen Yang and Lin Wei with a smile, gently asking, "When do you two plan to have a child? While I'm still healthy, I can help look after it."
Lin Wei slightly pursed her rosy lips, showing a hint of displeasure, and said in a mildly protesting tone, "Mom, I've just started work; I'm busy to the point of dizziness every day—how could I still have the energy to think about having a child?"
Hu Qingwan gave her a gentle glare and scolded, "Back when I was your age, I had already given birth to your older brother and didn't feel it would interfere with work at all!"
Lin Wei objected, "How can they be the same? Our government office deals with countless tasks, all kinds of complicated and tedious affairs, huge pressure—how could it be compared to your literary work?"
Hu Qingwan gave her a look and said, "You're just the deputy mayor's little secretary—how much work can you possibly have? I think you're just making excuses."
Lin Wei snorted and said, "I'm not planning to have a child anyway. If you want to hold a grandson, go ask my sister-in-law! The baby in her belly is a true red-sprouted Lin family heir."
Upon hearing Lin Wei trying to shift the blame onto her, Du Yue'e hurriedly drew a line: "Weiwei, I and your brother are already preparing; you can't push your problem onto me!"
Lin Wei laughed and said, "Sister-in-law, you can't put it that way. Mom just wants to hold a grandson sooner. If you have a child, wouldn't my problem be solved as well?"
Du Yue'e was instantly speechless.
Seeing Lin Wei's argument go nowhere, Hu Qingwan turned to Chen Yang and asked, "Chen Yang, your family line is a single inheritance—aren't you in a hurry?"
Chen Yang helplessly pointed at Lin Wei and said, "The initiative for having a child lies with her!"
Hu Qingwan sighed. Since the parties involved aren't in a rush, she can't do anything. She got up to go to the kitchen to prepare food, and Du Yue'e immediately followed to help.
Lin Wei moved closer to Chen Yang and whispered, "Honey, do you really want a child?"
Chen Yang originally really wanted a child, but now he's changed his mind. "No rush—focus on your work first. Whenever you want one, we'll plan then."
Lin Wei didn't believe him. "No, that definitely isn't what you truly think!"
Chen Yang gave a wry smile and said, "If I let you have a child, would you be willing?"
Lin Wei immediately shook her head.
Chen Yang then said, "Since you disagree, why bother asking?"
Lin Wei joked, "I'm worried you can't hold back and will secretly go have a child with someone else."
"Your imagination is truly rich; being a secretary is such a waste of talent." Chen Yang gave her a thumbs-up. "You should go write novels."
"I have no interest in writing novels." Lin Wei gently rested her silky, smooth hair on Chen Yang's broad shoulder and whispered, "Husband, I just feel that we've only just entered the hall of marriage not long ago; to start thinking about the next generation so soon seems a bit hasty, doesn't it?"
After hearing Lin Wei's words, Chen Yang also fell into contemplation. Calculating carefully, they have only been married for a little over two months since obtaining their license. Although they are now legally husband and wife, there still seem to be many aspects of each other's personalities, habits, and daily life that need further exploration and adjustment.
Chen Yang gently stroked Lin Wei's hair and said, "You make sense. We've only had our license for two months, so our mutual understanding may still not be deep or comprehensive enough. Discussing having a child at this point is indeed a bit premature."
"Thank you for understanding, husband!" Lin Wei happily kissed Chen Yang.
Chen Yang sighed. The biggest problem now isn't between him and Lin Wei, but the parents on both sides. Besides Hu Qingwan, Chen Chunmei calls Chen Yang each time asking when they'll have a child.
Recently Chen Yang has been making excuses to avoid going to the Sunshine Garden Community, fearing that Chen Chunmei will bring up the matter of continuing the family line. In her traditional view, once married one must have children, preferably several, to expand the Chen family's future.
However, the upcoming week will see his cousin Zhao Qian's important moment of entering university. As her older brother, Chen Yang has already stood her up several times; this time he cannot miss it no matter what.
