Chapter 26: Meeting the Father-in-Law

~8 min read 1,446 words

Lin Wei really knows how to handle Liu Qingqing; she just whispered a few words in her ear and treated her to KFC, and the conflict was resolved.

After their intimate moment at night, Chen Yang learned from Lin Wei that her work arrangements had changed and she needed to return to Qingshui City early to prepare.

Chen Yang analyzed that it was probably related to Xu Li, the Deputy Mayor of Qingshui City who had not yet taken office.

Although they were newlyweds, after only a few days of intimacy they had to start living apart; Chen Yang suddenly felt reluctant. After thinking it over, he decided to personally send Lin Wei home.

"Aren't you afraid my dad will beat you?"

"If this beating is unavoidable, better to get it over with sooner!"

Although they were newlyweds, after only a few days of intimacy they had to start living apart; Chen Yang suddenly felt reluctant. After thinking it over, he decided to personally send Lin Wei home.

"Don't worry, with me protecting you, Old Lin will know his limits." Lin Wei wrapped her arms around Chen Yang's neck and kissed his handsome face, which was a reward for his change in attitude.

After a while of intimacy, Lin Wei suddenly remembered something and asked Chen Yang if he was willing to work at the Qingshui City Industry and Commerce Bureau. "That position was secured by my dad pulling strings; it would be a waste to let it go."

Chen Yang felt rueful; having connections really made a difference. In his previous life, when he looked for work in Qingshui City, not only government offices but even public institutions would turn him away.

Of course, Zhang Jun's meddling was also a factor. Many people didn't want to offend the local tycoon just to help a rural kid.

Now with the Lin family as his backing, Chen Yang would face no resistance going to the Industry and Commerce Bureau. He felt a bit tempted, after all, this was the iron rice bowl he had dreamed of in his previous life. Even if he just slacked off there given his current net worth, he could guarantee food and clothing without worry.

The problem is, he still has to take revenge! Dealing with a local tycoon, being a low-level civil servant isn't enough. Given Lin Wei's personality, she would also never support him doing things for personal gain using power.

So, after weighing it repeatedly, Chen Yang still refused Lin Wei's good intentions.

Early the next morning, Chen Yang was awakened by the noise of Lin Wei packing her luggage.

She packed up all the personal items and books she had tidied the previous two days, sealed Chen Yang's gifted laptop and her own desktop computer in cardboard boxes, and then spent another roughly two hours busy.

Once all the luggage was loaded onto the car, the trunk and back seat were almost completely stuffed.

Even so, Chen Yang still drove to Xingcheng International Shopping Centre, the largest mall in Xingcheng, and bought ten packs of Zhonghua cigarettes and a case of Feitian Moutai for Lin Jianguo. He also bought some Chanel handbags, perfumes, and lipsticks for Lin Wei's mother and older sister-in-law.

"You're so generous, even if our Old Lin wanted to make things difficult for you, he'd feel a bit embarrassed." Lin Wei was very pleased with Chen Yang's performance.

In her impression, Chen Yang was a solitary, inept at socializing honest person. Apart from studying, he only worked part-time; he rarely joined gatherings with Zhang Jun and their other roommates. She had helped him apply for so many scholarships at school, yet she had never even shared a thank-you meal with him.

Who would have thought that, as graduation approached, he suddenly changed.

Lin Wei was somewhat unaccustomed to this change in Chen Yang, yet she also liked it. Although she liked his good looks, she didn't want to spend her life with a blockhead.

"I remember when we first went on a date, you scolded me for wanting to buy a single item."

"That's different. When you were strapped for cash, spending recklessly would add many unnecessary troubles to life. I don't want you to become a hypocrite."

Chen Yang smiled, not knowing how to respond. Lin Wei's wish was too idealistic; he couldn't fulfill it in his previous life, and even less so after his rebirth. In the real world, how can one avoid being hypocritical? All he could guarantee was treating the people close to him a little better.

After a three-hour highway drive, it was already 2 p. m. when they arrived in Qingshui City.

Lin Wei's home is in the Cuiyuan Community near the Qingshui City Public Security Bureau, one of the earliest commercial housing complexes in Qingshui City. During his freshman winter break, Chen Yang had gone there once with Zhang Jun, and he still roughly remembered the location.

As they approached the building, they could see from afar Bureau Chief Lin standing downstairs chatting with a few elderly people, with Lin Wei's older sister-in-law Du Yue'e standing beside him.

Upon seeing Lin Wei get out of the car, Lin Jianguo immediately stopped his idle chatter and cheerfully went up to inquire after his precious daughter. But when he saw Chen Yang step out of the driver's seat, his formerly bright face instantly darkened, and his eyes revealed a chilling killing intent.

Chen Yang quickly called out "Dad," and also greeted Du Yue'e as "sister-in-law."

Lin Jianguo gave a cold snort, still keeping a stern face.

Seeing Lin Jianguo's unpleasant expression, Du Yue'e dared not speak and merely gave Chen Yang a polite smile.

Seeing the atmosphere was off, Chen Yang quickly lowered his head and silently opened the rear door to move the luggage.

Lin Wei shook Lin Jianguo's arm, acting coquettishly: "Dad, I haven't had lunch yet!"

Upon hearing that, Lin Jianguo lost interest in dealing with Chen Yang and pulled Lin Wei toward home.

Lin Wei couldn't bear to let Chen Yang move the luggage alone; she pouted and expressed her dissatisfaction to Lin Jianguo: "Dad, there's so much luggage—couldn't you lend a hand?"

Lin Jianguo gave Chen Yang a sideways glance and snorted angrily: "After raising cabbage for over twenty years only to have it ruined by a pig, what's wrong with letting him move the luggage?"

Lin Wei lowered her voice and whispered to Lin Jianguo: "Dad, in the matter of the pig ruining the cabbage, the initiator was actually your family's cabbage."

Upon hearing that, Lin Jianguo looked at his daughter in disbelief, then glanced at Chen Yang moving things, and after a while still couldn't figure it out. He lowered his voice and asked Lin Wei: "Weiwei, besides looking like a pretty boy, in what way is this guy stronger than Chen Bing?"

"I like him, that's enough." Lin Wei said that and then urged Lin Jianguo to help move the things.

With everyone pitching in, the luggage and gifts were quickly moved.

Seeing Chen Yang buy Zhonghua cigarettes and Moutai, Lin Jianguo thought this kid still had some sense of propriety.

Upon further thought, he became unhappy again. With a stern face he told Lin Wei: "I recall this kid's family background is poor; the money for these cigarettes and alcohol couldn't be coming from you, could it?"

Lin Wei replied: "My little scholarship isn't even enough for my own use; what could I use to subsidize him?"

"Borrowed?" Lin Jianguo's face darkened further, and his attitude toward Chen Yang worsened. He shouted: "Without money, don't pretend to be a big spender—take these things back and return them!"

Chen Yang was about to explain, but Lin Wei beat him to it and defused the situation: "Dad, it's all his own money. Besides these cigarettes and alcohol, he also bought branded bags and cosmetics for Mom and sister-in-law, worth tens of thousands!"

Seeing that his daughter's expression didn't look like she was deceiving herself, Lin Jianguo's attitude eased a bit. He asked Chen Yang in an inquiring tone: "You're a student—where did you get so much money?"

Chen Yang recalled an interesting news story and replied: "When I was on the bus without change, I happened to see a lottery stall nearby, so I bought a ticket to get change. I didn't expect my luck to be good—I actually won the first prize."

"……"

Lin Jianguo suddenly felt the urge to beat someone up again. This kid is obviously trying to fool him by pretending to be a fool. With lottery wins so easy, how could there still be poor people in this world?
