Chapter 664: Investing in Racing Games
Chen Yang thought Luo Hao's classmates had their own financial backing, so securing the agency rights for KartRider was a sure thing. Unfortunately, the outcome left him a bit disappointed.
The next day, Chen Yang was still at home enjoying watching his bodyguards rough up Wenlong and the company's new employees when Luo Hao called. He said the Korean game company believed Chen Yang lacked experience operating games, which would affect their brand image, and ultimately handed the agency rights to that game company in Modu.
Faced with this result, Chen Yang was somewhat caught off guard. His dream of using KartRider to break into the domestic game market had collapsed after just one night.
Therefore, Chen Yang had Luo Hao's classmates come to Xingcheng to meet him.
Since the Korean game company refused to give him face, he had to let them know what the power of money is!
Two days later, Chen Yang received Luo Hao's classmates and his game team at the Old Hundreds Agricultural Products Trading Company.
"Chairman Chen, hello, I'm Li Cheng of Tian Cheng Game Studio. I deeply regret failing to secure the domestic agency rights for KartRider this time."
Chen Yang carefully sized up Li Cheng: about thirty, wearing a silver-gray suit with a dark blue tie, tall and slender, with a sunny demeanor, and a slight northern accent when he spoke.
"Li Cheng, does your team have the ability to produce a racing game similar to KartRider?"
Li Cheng froze for a moment. He realized that when KartRider became a hit in Korea, his first thought was how to grab its domestic agency rights and make a fortune.
Even if he encountered strong opponents in negotiations, all he could think of was finding a big backer like Chen Yang to earn a hefty brokerage fee.
As for creating original games, his studio had tried a few times over the years, but none won market recognition.
So when Chen Yang asked him whether he had the ability to create a new racing game from scratch, he hesitated.
"Chairman Chen, if you're interested in investing, we'll give it our all." Seeing Li Cheng silent, the bespectacled man accompanying him immediately took over the conversation.
Chen Yang asked the bespectacled man, "May I ask your name and what position you hold in your studio?"
The bespectacled man said, "I'm Zhang Yu, a game programmer. I've studied KartRider for a long time and have drawn plenty of inspiration from it."
Chen Yang waved his hand and said, "Your inspiration could easily become evidence for others accusing us of plagiarism. What I need is a team capable of producing this racing game. As for how the game should be made, I'll give you a completely new plan."
Zhang Yu's goal was to secure Chen Yang's investment; whether his inspiration would be recognized seemed unimportant. He jabbed Li Cheng hard and urged, "Why are you just standing there? Don't you have confidence in our team?"
Li Cheng frowned and said to Chen Yang, "Chairman Chen, developing a new racing game takes a long time. KartRider will enter the domestic market at the latest by early next year. Once they seize the market, our new game will likely struggle to achieve good results, possibly even losing money."
Chen Yang smiled and said, "A good dish doesn't fear being late; as long as our developed game has its own distinctive features, it will surely find a foothold in the market. Besides, I'm not afraid of losing money—what are you afraid of?"
Upon hearing this, Li Cheng immediately made up his mind. "Chairman Chen, if you're willing to invest, we will certainly devote ourselves fully to making this game."
Seeing his agreement, Chen Yang added, "If you lack manpower, you can recruit externally or scout industry elites abroad. As long as money can solve the problem, it's no issue for me."
Seeing Chen Yang's great enthusiasm for investing in games, Li Cheng suddenly felt a bit regretful. He wished he had raised the quote higher during the negotiations in Korea.
However, being able to personally participate in the creation of a great game is obviously a more exciting endeavor.
"Chairman Chen, should we move our studio to Xingcheng?"
"No need, keep working in Modu. I'll arrange personnel to liaise with you there. Once the relevant talent is hired, I'll also come over in person."
"All right, then we'll await your arrival in Modu."
Li Cheng's team left Chen Yang's office satisfied.
After everyone had left, Chen Yang called Luo Hao, asking him to take Li Cheng and the others to the best restaurant in Xingcheng for a meal, with the expenses reimbursed by the company.
He himself went to the Old Hundreds Financial Investment Company.
Cheng Xiao Xiao and Zhao Xiaoye had already gone to Zhou Baolin's company to supervise the rural express delivery project, while the rest were all playing games.
What reassured Chen Yang was that Wenlong had somewhat heeded advice, deliberately assigning a team to test other games.
Upon seeing Chen Yang arrive, Wenlong reluctantly put down his mouse.
"Chairman Chen, you've handled your matters so quickly?"
"No." Chen Yang shook his head, then put on a serious expression and said to him, "General Manager Yu, I've just negotiated a game cooperation project that requires assigning someone to be stationed in Modu for a period. Who do you think should go?"
Upon hearing this, Wenlong felt a bit embarrassed. He hadn't expected that his side still hadn't produced an investment proposal, while Chen Yang's side had already closed a deal.
But he was currently enjoying his games, having brought a bunch of company lackeys to take down Chen Yang's bodyguards online. Now, while savoring the fruits of victory, he certainly wouldn't want to run off to faraway Modu to be a lone commander.
"Chairman Chen, if it's a very important project, just let Assistant Huang go!"
Chen Yang glanced at Huang Youguang standing nearby, who immediately said, "Chairman Chen, I guarantee I'll complete the task."
Chen Yang had long anticipated that Wenlong wouldn't go to Modu; his real purpose in doing this was to transfer the opposing side's strategist, Huang Youguang, away.
"Assistant Huang, go back and prepare first; tomorrow you'll go to Modu together with the Tian Cheng Game Studio team."
Huang Youguang didn't expect Chen Yang's schedule to be so tight; he instinctively glanced at Wenlong. He hadn't expected that Wenlong's eyes would remain fixed on the computer game screen, utterly indifferent to his own comings and goings.
He felt a bit disappointed, but still obeyed Chen Yang's order and left Wenlong's office.
After he had left, Chen Yang then asked Wenlong, "General Manager Yu, how has your game experience been these past few days?"
"Not bad." Wenlong said proudly, "At first I ran into a hotheaded rookie who kept provoking me. After my efforts and those of my fellow colleagues, we finally suppressed their arrogance."
Seeing how obsessed he was with gaming, Chen Yang feigned seriousness to warn him, "General Manager Yu, gaming is gaming—don't get addicted! If someone complains to Deputy Secretary Yu, I'll have trouble explaining."
Wenlong dismissed it, saying, "Chairman Chen, rest assured—if anyone dares to smear you behind your back, I'll make them regret it."
