Chapter 113: Showdown and Falling Out
"Uh..." Shen Yan was stunned, not expecting that he would be involved in this; he and Wu Yueer had only shared a light hug, it shouldn't be enough to make someone that jealous.
"Did you say something to provoke him?" Shen Yan asked, feeling a bit suspicious.
Zhu Baoping felt a bit guilty and stammered, "I... I just said it offhandedly. Wu Yueer might like you, and then he punched me."
"How was I supposed to know he couldn't take a joke?"
Tang Song sighed and said, "You too, you know Lao Lin likes Wu Yueer, why go and needle him with your words?" Zhu Baoping stiffened his neck and blurted out the incident from the morning where Xiao Chuchu looked at Shen Yan and was needled by Lin Yang.
"It was Lao Lin who provoked me first. I didn't even mind at the time; he was the one who took it too seriously."
At this point, Tang Song didn't know what else to say; these two troublesome roommates seemed naturally at odds.
Forget it, let them be.
Just then, Yu Youwei also found them and pulled Shen Yan aside, saying, "Pi Yan, I feel like Yue'er might like you."
Shen Yan was stunned again.
One person says it, then another says it—could Wu Yueer really like him?
In truth, it wasn't that Shen Yan hadn't had such suspicions, he just didn't dare to confirm them and didn't want to overthink it.
Since they had been spending time together, the change in Wu Yueer's attitude toward him was obvious; from her previous carefree, fiery, and sharp-tongued self to her current ladylike demeanor, speaking in soft whispers, it was like she was a completely different person.
Of course, this side was only shown to Shen Yan; she still treated other boys, including Lin Yang, with a cold face. When those thick-skinned ones tried to pester her, Wu Yueer would even curse them out, making them lose face on the spot.
Sometimes Shen Yan also wondered whether Wu Yueer truly treated him as a buddy or if she had ulterior motives.
During military training, Wu Yueer had threatened to become his sworn sibling, which Shen Yan scoffed at. On the way home for National Day, Wu Yueer had suggested that if they weren't going to be buddies, they could be a couple; Shen Yan still scoffed, treating it as if she were joking.
But as their contact grew deeper, Shen Yan discovered that Wu Yueer had absolutely no reservations around him; she would let him touch her thighs to go out and play, acted tender and affectionate, and even touched his abdominal muscles.
These were often intimate interactions between couples.
Yet, Wu Yueer always kept the word "buddy" on her lips, and her behavior crossed gender boundaries; it was also plausible to say she had no sense of gender boundaries and was just treating Shen Yan as a good buddy.
Shen Yan didn't want to say it clearly, lest he be laughed at for being delusional—what people on the internet called an "average but confident man," someone who is overconfident and actually thinks they have so much charm that beautiful women will all revolve around them.
Before long, Wu Yueer, who had returned from the restroom, asked around and found that no one knew the reason for the fight, so she approached Zhu Baoping's side.
Zhu Baoping scratched his head and kept his mouth shut. Tang Song and Shen Yan didn't know what to say either, looking everywhere but at her. Wu Yueer felt something was wrong and said, "It wouldn't have anything to do with me, would it?"
Shen Yan said, "Just don't ask. It's inevitable for men to have some friction."
Wu Yueer didn't believe it and ran over to the open space by the horizontal bars to call Lin Yang. Lin Yang was quite blunt; having nothing to lose, he asked Wu Yueer if she liked Shen Yan and was intentionally distancing herself from him.
Wu Yueer's head was buzzing, as if a swarm of bees were humming; it actually was because of her. Wu Yueer started cursing directly: "Are you f***ing sick? I'm not your private property. Who I hang out with is my freedom. Even if I got a boyfriend, it wouldn't have a damn thing to do with you."
"You're how old now, and you're still fighting? Can you be more mature?"
It was the first time Lin Yang had faced Wu Yueer's fiery temper directly, and he was startled, his tone softening a bit: "I just feel like Old Shen has a girlfriend, and you being that close to him doesn't look good."
"So what if we celebrated with teammates after winning the championship? No one else said anything, only you have so many issues. It's hilarious. Don't come looking for me ever again."
"Hey, hey! Yue'er..."
Hanging up the phone, Wu Yueer leaned against the wall and took a few deep breaths, her heart full of worries, her mind as messy as a pot of burnt porridge.
Who cared what happened to Lin Yang? She just wanted to eliminate the impact of this incident as quickly as possible.
After returning to the spectator stands, Wu Yueer began to complain with a heart full of rage: "Lin Yang has a hole in his brain. It was just a hug, what's the big deal? He actually fought someone over it."
This sentence immediately resonated with Zhu Baoping, who chimed in: "Exactly. He's too narrow-minded. He gets all worked up over a casual joke and just comes up and punches me."
As he spoke, he pointed to his bruised cheek to show his innocence.
Tang Song kicked him and said, "You two are six of one and half a dozen of the other; don't laugh at each other. Don't cause trouble when we get back; we still have to live together for four years."
"Got it!" Zhu Baoping said with a grin. Anyway, he wasn't the one who suffered a loss; if Lin Yang wanted to fight, he would see it through to the end, but it was best if they could just settle things.
Seeing Wu Yueer's attitude, Shen Yan's doubts vanished.
Sure enough, Huniu was just carefree and lacked a sense of boundaries between men and women. It was he who had been made restless time and time again—that really shouldn't have happened!
Wu Yueer added, "Shen Yan, you go and persuade Lin Yang later. Tell him to give up early; I have no intention of dating, and I certainly won't like him."
Shen Yan quickly distanced himself; Lin Yang was stubborn, and this kind of thing had to be handled by the person involved to avoid collateral damage. Tang Song felt the same way: "If you don't cut it off when you should, you'll suffer the consequences. Wu Yueer, you should just give Lin Yang a clean break; dragging it out is good for no one."
"I already spoke clearly to him just now; I can't help it if he doesn't listen." Wu Yueer looked helpless.
"Then let him be!"
At 3:30 in the afternoon, the final event of the sports meet concluded successfully. With a passionate speech from the principal, this three-day sports meet officially came to an end.
It is worth mentioning that the Law School's results this year were outstanding—one could say they shone brilliantly! After fierce competition, they successfully ranked in the good position of third place, capturing a total of twenty heavy medals!
The school leadership was beaming with joy over there and announced that they would organize a victory banquet that evening.
After the event dispersed, Tang Song invited Shen Yan to go back to the dormitory to sit for a while, just in case those two troublesome ones clashed again, so there would be more people to break up the fight.
Shen Yan didn't refuse; there were still some things in the dormitory he hadn't taken away, so it would be good to go back and check.
