Chapter 412: Consecutive Calls

~8 min read 1,418 words

Shen Yan was completely indifferent: "It's not like you girls don't look at handsome guys; this is what they call the universal human appreciation for beauty."

Luo Qiqi rolled her eyes in a charming way: "That's not the same thing at all. Who knows what you boys are thinking in your hearts."

"How is it not the same? It's just like when you women go shopping and see pretty clothes; whether you buy them or not doesn't matter, you just want to try them on." Shen Yan said something shocking.

Luo Qiqi and Yu Youwei were speechless; is this thing something you can just try on whenever you want?

What the hell, if you're not satisfied after trying it, can you return it?

Suddenly, a crisp ringtone sounded from inside the car, and Shen Yan picked up his phone to look.

It was a call from Wang Sicong.

He answered and turned on the speakerphone.

"Hey! Wang!"

Wang Sicong: "Old Shen, are you coming to Shanghai during the break? I'm organizing a gathering tomorrow to introduce you to a few friends."

Shen Yan raised an eyebrow. Wang Sicong's friends were certainly not ordinary people; making more connections was naturally good, and they could come in handy at critical moments.

It was just that the timing wasn't very suitable right now.

"It's really bad timing; I'm rushing back to my hometown right now, and I have to visit the graves tomorrow."

Wang Sicong didn't express regret: "Alright then, I'll call you next time I have a gathering. By the way, do you have time tonight? Bring Yue'er along to play some games."

Yue'er?

Hearing this name, both Yu Youwei and Luo Qiqi were stunned. Although they weren't quite sure who was on the other end of the phone, it was clear that the person was in Shanghai.

This Yue'er clearly referred to Wu Yueer.

Back when school first started, Shen Yan and Wu Yueer had been hanging out together, and playing games together was a common occurrence.

But how could the other party know Wu Yueer? And it sounded like they were very familiar with each other.

Shen Yan's heart skipped a beat, but he remained calm on the surface: "I should be free tonight. I'll message you after I eat. That's all for now, I'm driving."

"Alright! Talk tonight."

The call ended.

For some reason, the car fell into a ghostly silence, and Shen Yan turned on the music player.

After the whole summer passes~

The sadness doesn't get any better~

Driving on the endless highway~

At this moment, Yu Youwei spoke up to break the atmosphere: "Shen Yan, didn't you say before that you were planning to settle in Shanghai? Have you bought the house yet?"

Shen Yan said he had, over in the Pudong New Area.

Yu Youwei was immediately overjoyed: "Isn't that very close to the Oriental Pearl Tower? Qiqi and I are planning to go to Shanghai for May Day, and we'll bring Shanni and Yue'er along. Why don't you come too, and show me your place while you're at it?"

"We'll see later. I'm not sure if I'll have time then."

Shen Yan had already explored Shanghai thoroughly; whether he went to play or not didn't matter.

Upon hearing this, Yu Youwei didn't feel disappointed. When Shen Yan got busy, he was always nowhere to be found for days at a time; she was used to it.

Finally, the car drove out of the school gate, and the road ahead was clear. The phone rang again.

This time it was a call from Chen Jun.

"Hey! Uncle Chen."

Chen Jun: "Shen Yan, is Shanni next to you? I just called her phone and no one answered."

It didn't sound like anything important, so Shen Yan responded casually: "She just finished class, so she probably put her phone on silent and didn't hear it. Try calling her again later."

Chen Jun understood, then asked: "Is it convenient for you to talk right now?"

"I'm driving. Is something the matter?"

"Then give me a call when you're free. There are some issues with the company I need to discuss with you."

"Alright! I'll call you when I get home."

Uncle Chen? Shanni? Company?

Very keenly, Luo Qiqi and Yu Youwei caught the key words from the conversation.

This Uncle Chen was likely Chen Shanni's father, that middle-aged man with a powerful aura; they had met him once during Chen Shanni's birthday.

So Shen Yan was still in contact with Chen Jun privately, and it sounded like the two had a very close relationship.

It was very likely that Chen Shanni played an important role in this.

After the call ended, Yu Youwei couldn't help but ask out of curiosity: "Shen Yan, was that Shanni's father who just called?"

Luo Qiqi chimed in: "It sounds like you two are very close."

Shen Yan didn't intend to explain too much and simply brushed it off by saying they had some business dealings. The two women nodded thoughtfully; no wonder Shen Yan took such good care of Chen Shanni, so there was this layer of reason behind it.

Intense curiosity, like strings on a harp, kept plucking at the two women's minds.

"Then you must know Shanni's family background. Is she just like the wealthy heiress in TV dramas, hiding her greatness in the city, or hiding in the court?" Yu Youwei's eyes sparkled with excitement.

Shen Yan looked at her speechlessly: "Your imagination is rich enough. Do you think a wealthy tycoon would do business with a greenhorn like me?"

Uh...

The two women were jolted back to reality.

That's right! What level was Shen Yan at? How could he reach that kind of person?

It seemed Chen Shanni was really just a little rich girl with a well-off family; they had overthought it.

There was still an hour left before the end of the workday, and the traffic in the city was decent. In just half an hour, the car successfully reached the highway entrance.

Speeding along, occasionally stuck in traffic for a short while, most of the time it was smooth sailing. The road conditions were much better than expected. If the high-speed rail from Hangzhou to Cangnan hadn't been opened yet, Shen Yan would definitely have chosen to take the high-speed rail.

It saves time and effort!

At six in the evening, having driven nearly half the distance, Shen Yan drove into a service area to rest and ate some fast food inside. The taste wasn't great, and the price was more than double what it was outside.

It averaged 25 yuan per person.

"Youwei!"

As she walked out of the restaurant, Yu Youwei suddenly heard someone calling her.

She turned her head to look.

Ha! The big chatterbox Xu Lin, who was studying at Polytechnic University and was also Yu Youwei's class monitor during high school.

On the day of school registration, it was Xu Lin's father who drove Yu Youwei and Shen Yan to the school gate.

Having not seen him for a few months, Xu Lin had grown out a side-parted hairstyle, making him look full of energy; with a satchel slung over his shoulder, he appeared very pleasantly surprised to run into Shen Yan and Yu Youwei.

"What a coincidence, I didn't expect to run into you here. Shen Yan, did you drive back?"

Shen Yan did not really like this person and just nodded indifferently: "We still have to be on our way, so we won't chat much."

As he spoke, he was about to turn and leave, with Yu Youwei and Luo Qiqi following closely behind.

According to normal human logic, Xu Lin should have just waved goodbye, but this guy was not a normal person; he caught up and said familiarly: "Since we're going the same way anyway, why don't you give me a ride? I always feel so uncomfortable on the bus."

Perhaps fearing that Shen Yan would not agree, Xu Lin added another sentence: "Regardless, my dad gave you a ride back then, you shouldn't be that stingy, right?"

Shen Yan was indifferent to this; one more person didn't make much difference, and one less didn't either, so he only demanded one thing: "I can give you a ride, but don't talk so much once you're in the car."

Xu Lin agreed readily; he truly disliked taking the bus, and traveling with Shen Yan meant there would be someone to talk to, so why not?
