Chapter 72: Each One's Reaction

~8 min read 1,497 words

Building 8, Dormitory 115.

Zhu Baoping and Lin Yang looked at each other, their eyes nearly popping out of their sockets.

Lin Yang cursed and said, "Shen Yan is too good at keeping secrets; he didn't let a single word slip about such a big deal."

Zhu Baoping's eyes were overflowing with envy, jealousy, and hatred. "Why don't I have such luck? Damn it!"

Tang Song, who was squatting in the restroom, said, "I heard Mingqing mention this. Shen Yan bought a house in that Danqingyuan Residential Complex near the school for 1.25 million, and also bought a BMW 3 Series for 300,000. After deducting 400,000 in taxes from the two million, he's pretty much spent it all."

Lin Yang and Zhu Baoping's heads were buzzing—he squandered such a huge sum of money?

Lin Yang felt that with so much money, what couldn't you do? Eating, drinking, and living it up would be as carefree as it gets; buying a house and a car was the most low-class approach.

Zhu Baoping agreed deeply; houses and cars weren't necessities. If you have money, you should spend it on women—isn't it better to revel in nightly festivities?

Sigh! Comparing people really makes one angry.

Tang Song shook his head in the restroom, disagreeing with their thoughts. Only with a house do you have a home; settling down in a big city like Hangzhou had always been his dream. Regarding Shen Yan's actions, he gave his full support.

Two hours passed in a flash.

Danqingyuan Residential Complex, Shen Family home.

The cleaning staff had long finished their work and disappeared into the distance, happily having collected their pay.

Shen Yan and his grandmother were leaning comfortably on the sofa watching television.

"Ding-dong," the phone suddenly made a sound; it was a message from Hao Anqi.

"Is the house tidied up?"

Shen Yan: "Done, I'm at home watching TV right now."

Hao Anqi: "Fortunately, longing is silent, otherwise it would be deafening."

Shen Yan's lips curled slightly; it was another bit of sweet talk she'd copied from somewhere. He said, "I'm too tired today, I'll come find you tomorrow when I'm free."

"Alright then (sullen)."

Afterward, Shen Yan greeted Shen Nainai and prepared to return to the dormitory to get some things. Just as he stepped out, he saw Chen Shanni and Wu Yue'er walking out of the elevator with bags in their hands.

"Hey! Shen Yan, did you buy your house in the same place as Shanni?"

As she spoke, Wu Yue'er playfully winked at Shen Yan.

Shen Yan nodded in affirmation and said, "You two go ahead with your business, I'm going back to the dorm to get some things." Wu Yue'er grabbed him, "Wait, give me a ride on your way."

"Shanni, I'll just drop you off here."

Chen Shanni smiled faintly and politely expressed her thanks to Wu Yue'er.

Riding through the campus, the streetlights were like dazzling pearls embedded under the night sky, illuminating the entire campus brightly.

Most students had already returned to school, and the winding paths were filled with youthful students coming and going, either young couples with arms around each other or girls strolling hand in hand.

Feeling something strange in his lower abdomen, Shen Yan reached out and slapped the back of Wu Yue'er's hand, saying irritably, "Behave yourself, is that somewhere you can touch?"

Wu Yue'er chuckled and said, "You don't lose anything if I touch you." Shen Yan said, "Then you let me touch you, don't give me that 'boys and girls are different' talk."

"Then touch me, I won't resist." Wu Yue'er looked indifferent.

Damn!

Shen Yan seriously suspected that this Huniu was born with the wrong gender; she was practically more of a hooligan than a hooligan.

Seeing this, Wu Yue'er revealed a triumphant smile, as if she were a general who had won a battle.

Walking into the dormitory building and opening the door, five pairs of eyes looked over in unison.

Zhu Baoping, who was lying on that computer chair, wasn't paying attention and fell backward onto the floor with a bang. The sound was simply too much to look at. He rubbed his aching back of the head and complained, "Shen Yan, you finally know how to come back? You didn't even make a peep about such a big deal."

Lin Yang couldn't even be bothered with his game; he stood up excitedly and asked Shen Yan if he really took the money to buy a house and a car.

Shen Yan described the fabricated sequence of events nonchalantly and then said, "I'll be living off-campus from now on, I just came by to pick up some things."

Everyone showed reluctance, especially Lin Yang. Shen Yan was the one who suited his tastes best in the whole dormitory; with him leaving, he would likely feel doubly lonely and bored.

Tang Song smiled and offered his blessings: "Then today counts as your housewarming, congratulations! Do you have a lot of stuff? I can lend a hand and help you move it over."

"Not much stuff, and I don't need to take it all; I'll still come back to stay for a couple of days occasionally."

Shen Yan packed up some personal items and locked his toiletries in the cabinet; the most troublesome thing was the computer chair.

At this moment, Shen Yan noticed various stains on the surface of the computer chair and couldn't help but frown, saying, "Zhu, it's one thing for you to use the computer chair, but how did you get it so dirty?"

Zhu Baoping looked slightly embarrassed and quickly said, "Sorry, I'll help you wipe it clean right now."

"Forget it, forget it! I'll do it myself."

Shen Yan dismantled the computer chair into pieces and then tied it securely to his electric scooter.

Looking at the brightly lit dormitory building before him, Shen Yan smiled freely, then turned and disappeared into the vast night.

Just as he returned to his new home, a message from Yu Youwei followed.

"Shen Yan, how come I never heard you mention that Shanni bought a house right next door to you?"

Shen Yan: "Since she didn't bring it up, she must have had her own reasons, so why should I make an unnecessary fuss?"

Yu Youwei: "I feel like we aren't as close as before; you don't tell me anything anymore."

Shen Yan: "I don't think so, we are still good friends."

The next morning, the sky was gray, as if covered by a huge gray curtain. A fine drizzle fell, as dense as ox hair. The raindrops tapped lightly against the window, making a crisp sound, waking Shen Yan from his sleep.

He opened his phone to look: 7:05, ten minutes until his alarm was set to go off.

Looking at the flawless white ceiling above, Shen Yan rubbed his sleepy eyes, got up, and pulled open the curtains.

Sigh! What terrible weather.

After washing up and opening the bedroom door, a bowl of steaming white porridge was on the dining table, along with a bowl of fried eggs. Shen Nainai was sitting on the sofa, watching TV with nothing to do.

A rainy day is a day to keep guests; Shen Nainai, who had always liked to go out for a stroll, was helplessly trapped at home.

Shen Yan said, "Grandma, there is a convenience store in the complex where many middle-aged and elderly people gather to play mahjong. If you're bored, you can go there and take a look."

Upon hearing this, Shen Nainai's spirits were lifted. After retiring, she only had a few hobbies: playing mahjong, going out for walks, and dancing square dances.

After eating breakfast, Shen Yan found a rain canopy and installed it on his electric scooter; at present, rain canopies were not strictly prohibited, so he could use it safely and boldly.

Passing through the South Main Gate and entering the campus, the figure of Chen Shanni holding a small umbrella and moving with light, lotus-like steps came into view; she wore a pair of black-rimmed glasses on the bridge of her nose, and the hems of her wide-leg trousers were damp, clearly divided into two areas with a significant difference in color. Shen Yan stopped beside her and said, "Do you want me to give you a lift? I see your shoes are about to get soaked."

Chen Shanni nodded her little head in pleasant surprise, then sat sideways behind Shen Yan. Shen Yan asked, "Why don't you buy a vehicle? The campus is so big, it's very inconvenient to run back and forth every day."

Chen Shanni said in a soft, gentle voice, "I bought a bicycle, but I just can't ride it on rainy days."

Only then did Shen Yan understand.

Five minutes later, the two arrived at the Xingzhi Teaching Building near the gate of the East Campus, and they happened to run right into a few girls from the Dormitory.
