Chapter 113: The Feeling of Being Taken Care Of Is Truly Wonderful

~8 min read 1,554 words

Held in his arms, Bai Shuruo felt an inexplicable sense of peace at that moment.

Upon reaching the room, he placed her on the bed and fetched a thermometer to check her temperature.

"It's fine, just a low-grade fever. Drink plenty of water and take some medicine, and you'll be better," Han Yangting said.

Bai Shuruo said, "Just a low-grade fever? Why does a low-grade fever feel so miserable?"

"Silly, any illness is miserable." Han Yangting lowered his head to kiss her on the face, then added, "You lie down; I'll go pour you some hot water to drink."

"Mm," she said, lying in bed and behaving obediently.

Before she was married, she felt that the most miserable part of life was being sick.

Once a person gets sick, they become fragile; they don't want to see a doctor, so they just go to the pharmacy alone to buy some cold medicine or rest medication, then hide under the covers to tough it out.

Whenever she was hiding under the covers enduring it, she would miss her father especially.

Although her father was busy, every time she felt unwell, he could sense it, and he would care for her, give her medicine, and then coax her to sleep, only leaving once she was asleep.

"Ruoruo, time for medicine." Just as Bai Shuruo was thinking this, Han Yangting arrived with hot water; he was also holding cold medicine, the powdered sachet type.

"This medicine of yours is so bitter," Bai Shuruo complained. Usually, when she had a cold, she just bought tablets and swallowed a handful to get it over with; she had no desire to drink powdered medicine at all.

Han Yangting actually tasted a sip and then said, "Is it bitter? I don't think so."

"Why are you drinking it yourself? This is medicine!" Bai Shuruo said anxiously.

He said sternly, "I was just helping you taste it. Take your medicine obediently, or I'll feed it to you."

"Fine, I'll drink it," Bai Shuruo said hurriedly.

She thought of the scenes in TV dramas where medicine was fed mouth-to-mouth and couldn't help but worry that Han Yangting would feed her medicine that way.

Back at the Castle, he had tried feeding her drinks like that; it was mortifying.

She drank the powder in one gulp and then painfully lay back down on the bed; the medicine was so bitter it gave her goosebumps all over.

Han Yangting suddenly produced a piece of dried tangerine peel candy as if by magic and stuffed it into her mouth.

"Mm, where did the dried tangerine peel candy come from?" Bai Shuruo asked.

Han Yangting smiled, leaned in front of her, and said, "Naturally, it's what I brought for you."

Chewing the dried tangerine peel candy, Bai Shuruo truly felt it wasn't bitter anymore.

She looked at Han Yangting with emotion and said once more, "Brother Han, you... are really good."

Han Yangting then brought over a book and said, "I'll stay here with you tonight."

"But..."

Han Yangting said, "You're sick and need someone by your side. What if you develop a high fever in the middle of the night? What if you have a seizure? Things like this can be big or small."

Bai Shuruo said "Oh," and then made room for him.

She lay to the side watching him; he was reading the book intently. His profile was handsome, there was fine stubble on his chin, and his shoulders were broad and thick. He was wearing high-quality pure cotton loungewear, which made one feel very warm.

The feeling of having someone by your side to take care of you when you are sick is truly wonderful.

After lying there for a while, she drifted off to sleep in a daze.

The next day, Bai Shuruo woke up and still felt a bit of a headache.

Just as she was about to get up, Han Yangting walked in and said he had already asked for leave on her behalf.

Bai Shuruo couldn't help but say, "My body is actually fine; it would have been okay not to take leave."

Han Yangting sat over and touched her forehead: "If you want to work, it's the same at home; the environment at home is better. Don't worry, I've already told your sister, and your sister said your work isn't busy at the moment."

Bai Shuruo felt that was true too.

Thus, the day became quite relaxed.

Han Yangting cooked porridge for her and stir-fried some small side dishes, saying that when she was sick, she shouldn't eat greasy things.

After she finished eating, he tucked her back into the room and told her to work in bed if she wanted to.

Bai Shuruo's work wasn't very busy either; recently the company had been busy with production, and new car models weren't being developed for the time being. She decided to browse automotive forums again, look at all the domestic and foreign car models and styles, and then organize her notes from yesterday's Carnival.

Around 10 o'clock in the morning, Meng Ze called her.

"Supervisor Bai, why didn't you come in today?"

Bai Shuruo said directly, "I'm feeling a bit unwell, so I took a day off."

"Is it because you got rained on yesterday?"

"Maybe, but it's not your fault; it's just that my own resistance is too poor."

"Then this is my responsibility. If I hadn't invited you to ride in my car, you wouldn't have gotten sick." Meng Ze's voice sounded roguish, half-teasing and half-concerned.

"Please don't blame yourself. I'm an adult; I'll take responsibility for my own body."

Meng Ze then said, "Then Supervisor Bai, may I come to your house to visit you?"

Bai Shuruo immediately refused, saying, "No need, it's not very convenient to come to my house. Besides, there's nothing seriously wrong with my health; I can go to work tomorrow."

"Then take care of your health, Supervisor Bai."

"Alright, if anything happens in the department while I'm away today, remember to tell me."

"Understood."

Bai Shuruo hung up the phone and thought back to her experience with Meng Ze yesterday.

Although the motorcycle was very exciting and free, her body really wasn't suited for riding on one.

Bai Shuruo only rested at home for one day before going to work.

That day, Bai Shunan specifically waited for her at the front desk.

Seeing her, Bai Shunan asked, "Ruoruo, didn't they say you were sick? How are you feeling now?"

As she spoke, she reached over to touch her forehead.

Bai Shuruo said, "I'm fine, it's just that I had a slight fever the day before yesterday, and Brother Han insisted that I rest at home."

"He's just concerned about you; with such a good husband, you should be secretly happy," Bai Shunan laughed. "Since you're fine now, go back to work. Take care of your health, and if you feel uncomfortable, just tell me."

"I know, Sister."

Just as Bai Shunan went back, Meng Ze arrived.

Seeing Bai Shuruo, Meng Ze said, "Supervisor Bai is back to work today? Are you well-rested?"

"I'm well-rested," Bai Shuruo smiled at him.

Bai Shuruo asked again, "I wasn't here yesterday; was there anything in our department?"

"It's fine. If there were any issues, wouldn't I be able to handle them?"

"Thank you for your hard work."

The two chatted while walking back to the office.

Perhaps because of yesterday's experience, the two of them were getting along like old friends now.

After reaching his seat, Meng Ze first put down his backpack, then picked up Bai Shuruo's water cup and said, "Supervisor Bai, let me go pour you a glass of water."

"Oh, no need, I'll do it myself," Bai Shuruo said quickly.

Meng Ze didn't give her a chance to refuse; he said, "I caused you to catch a cold, so pouring you water is only right. I originally wanted to bring you breakfast, but I remembered that you usually eat breakfast before coming in, so I didn't bring any."

"Then... thank you for your hard work."

Bai Shuruo logged into WeChat on her computer.

She habitually browsed the group messages first.

There were no special notifications in the work group, but the middle school group was chatting quite happily; a classmate was preparing to get married and invited everyone to the wedding banquet.

Bai Shuruo couldn't recall who this classmate was, so she didn't say anything.

At this moment, Wang Hu sent her a private message, asking, "Bai Shuruo, are you going to the wedding banquet? We discussed it privately; if we go, we'll each chip in 200 to buy the couple a gift. Do you think that's okay?"

People in Fengcheng generally don't accept red envelopes when they get married; even if one is given, the host will fold a corner of it and return it. They only accept expensive gifts from relatives, not from friends.

Bai Shuruo said, "Sure, I'll transfer the money to you."

After the transfer, Bai Shuruo suddenly thought of something and asked Wang Hu, "By the way, Wang Hu, you mentioned that librarian from back then—is it this person?"

After saying this, Bai Shuruo found a photo of Meng Ze playing basketball that day from the company's shared photos and sent it to Wang Hu.
