Chapter 206: I Can Marry Her
Bai Shuruo had previously heard Ling Feng mention that Han Yangting was preparing to remarry, to a woman of mixed heritage.
Yesterday, she heard Han Dongbei and Ye Caiyue mention Nana again; presumably, this must be that Nana.
She only heard Han Yangting continue to speak: "I am on my way to work now, it's quite on the way, so could you wait for me at the entrance of People's Park?"
She did not know what was said on the other end, but Han Yangting hung up the phone shortly after.
Bai Shuruo unconsciously gripped her hem tightly; in that instant, she only felt a sharp pain in her chest, as if she had been electrocuted.
Even tears welled up, and the scenery outside the window became blurred, but she tried her best to hold them back.
After a good while, she steadied her emotions and then said to Han Yangting: "Please let me off at the bus stop ahead; I can take the bus home from there."
Han Yangting asked: "Isn't it still too far here? How about going two more stops?"
"No need." Bai Shuruo stopped talking to Han Yangting; she turned to the driver in front and raised her voice several decibels: "Lao Huang, stop the car."
The driver was perhaps startled by Bai Shuruo's voice, and he hurriedly pulled over to the side to stop.
Bai Shuruo could not care about so much anymore; she opened the door, said "Goodbye, Mr. Han," and then stepped onto the sidewalk by the road.
She stood at the bus stop pretending to wait for a bus, and only after Han Yangting's car had driven far away did she start to walk slowly.
The tears she had been holding back all this time flowed out at this moment like a breached dam.
This feeling of heartache was as unbearable as if her whole being had been torn to pieces.
She felt that people were sometimes truly pathetic; sometimes they don't know how to cherish, and only know the pain when they are about to lose it.
She had always felt that the feelings between her and Han Yangting were not deep; all along, these feelings had been led by him, while she passively accepted them. She had loved him, but it had not reached the point of being unable to live without him.
Now it seemed, it really was like being unable to live without him.
She walked aimlessly, not knowing how long she had walked, before she sat down on a bench.
While she was crying, someone not far away had been watching her the whole time.
……
Bai Shuruo did not know how she had returned to the dormitory either.
When she returned, blisters had already formed on her heels.
She was too lazy to care, simply lying on the bed and staring blankly at the ceiling.
She did not know how long she had been lying there, until her phone vibrated; she picked it up and saw that Meng Ze was calling her.
"Hello..." Bai Shuruo's voice was listless.
Meng Ze said: "I found a job today, doing design."
"Congratulations."
"What's wrong with you? Your voice sounds off."
"It's nothing, I just came from the Manor. Maybe I'm missing Xiaofeng. Xiaofeng started kindergarten, the kind that costs over three hundred thousand a semester. I feel a bit lost; I always feel like I can't give her this kind of life."
Meng Ze was silent for a moment and said: "It's not that you can't afford it. Aren't you still not officially divorced? Otherwise, you could draft a new divorce agreement and demand a division of assets; that way you would have the means."
Bai Shuruo did not respond.
Meng Ze said: "I'm joking. I know you aren't that kind of person. You are someone who is always worried about owing someone else; you refuse to take anything from anyone."
Bai Shuruo was silent for a moment and said: "Since you've found a job, then work hard. Money is truly important."
"I wanted to say, do you want to change jobs? Actually, you could go back to doing design; you have that kind of talent."
Bai Shuruo smiled: "I lost that talent from my early years long ago. It's good enough that I can support myself now. Meng Ze, I won't talk to you anymore; I'm hungry and am going to cook something to eat."
"How about you come over and I'll treat you to a meal, or should I come over?"
"No need, another day. I'll just go downstairs and have a bowl of noodles, and I want to catch up on some shows tonight."
"Alright, then as you wish."
……
Meng Ze was actually in the vicinity of Bai Shuruo's home.
The job he found was also close to her place; he had just come out of the interview, and the company had already decided to hire him. He could officially start work next Monday.
But since Bai Shuruo did not want to see him, he had no choice but to ride his motorcycle away by himself.
Meng Ze looked handsome as he rode his motorcycle, moving like a gust of wind, just like in his youth.
Returning to the old house in the alley, he parked the motorcycle and was just about to go in when he heard someone call him.
He turned around and saw Han Dongbei.
Meng Ze paused for a few seconds, then took off his helmet, nodded toward Han Dongbei, and said: "You're here?"
His attitude was very distant, as if treating a stranger.
Han Dongbei nodded: "A Ze, long time no see. May I come in?"
Just like several years ago, Meng Ze invited Han Dongbei into the house and poured him a glass of hot water.
"Meng Ze, it's been over three years. Are you doing well?" Han Dongbei asked.
Meng Ze said: "I'm not missing hands or feet, I'm doing just fine."
"I'm quite happy to see you back," Han Dongbei said.
Meng Ze smiled and did not reply.
Han Dongbei asked: "Do you think that I'm the only one happy, and that I'm being sentimental?"
"I don't know, but I certainly don't have that feeling," Meng Ze said truthfully.
Han Dongbei also smiled: "You child, being too honest will make you suffer. Your father suffered such losses back then; listening to others' instigation, I went to Africa and didn't keep my feet on the ground."
Meng Ze could not help but ask: "When you went to Africa, wasn't it because you loved the work there?"
"Half and half," Han Dongbei said. "Perhaps I'm older now and have started to long for my family."
Han Dongbei asked him again: "Meng Ze, your grandfather intends to sell this place, right? Where will you live then?"
"Anywhere is fine. Aren't there plenty of houses for rent outside? It's not like I'll be sleeping on the street."
"How about I buy you a house? Although this place is valuable, it is too old after all, and it doesn't even have a bathroom."
"No need. If I want to buy a house, I can buy one using my own ability," Meng Ze said.
Han Dongbei drank the glass of water he had poured, then sighed: "You child, you are truly stubborn. In this regard, you are actually a bit like that child Ruoruo."
Meng Ze asked: "How do you plan to deal with her? Are you going to let her get a divorce, or keep things as they are? It's impossible for Han Yangting to go without a wife forever, right?"
"I don't know about that. It's a matter for the young people themselves, so let them make their own decisions. However, A Ze, there is something I might offend you by saying, but I still have to say it: it is not appropriate for you to be mixed up between them."
Meng Ze said irritably: "What is inappropriate about it? Xiaofeng has even called me Daddy. If they divorce, I will marry Ruoruo."
Han Dongbei said earnestly: "A Ze, I am just afraid you will get hurt."
"I don't need you to worry about me." Meng Ze continued to wash the rice and cook.
But he asked Han Dongbei one thing: "Do you want to stay for dinner?"
