Chapter 210: A Man's Gaze
The games ended in the afternoon.
The kindergarten arranged a buffet.
Although the ingredients were not particularly high-end, the children were very happy to eat together, and the parents ate casually as well.
Having played games all morning, both adults and children were hungry, so Bai Shuruo, Han Yangting, and Xiaofeng sat down to eat together.
Bai Shuruo felt her appetite had never been as good as it was today; she ate a lot of roasted chicken wings, curry fish balls, and various fruits, and did not forget to get some for Xiaofeng.
Looking at Han Yangting, he maintained a dignified appearance at all times; not wanting to crowd with the other parents and children, he only took a little fruit and sat down to eat in small bites.
Bai Shuruo watched for a while, and unable to bear it, she pushed the plate she had filled with food toward him.
Seeing this, Han Yangting said "Thank you," and then picked up a sandwich.
Bai Shuruo looked at the sandwich, thinking of how he had once made them for her, and she could not help but drift off for a moment.
Xiaofeng finished eating quickly and went to compare how many rabbits she had with the other children, so only Han Yangting and Bai Shuruo were left at this table.
When playing the games, everyone had cooperated and acted like an ordinary married couple, yet as soon as the games ended, they returned to a state of not speaking.
But with the two of them huddled together, it was inevitably a bit awkward.
In the end, it was Han Yangting who spoke first: "Are you going back to the Manor to stay tonight?"
"No, I only have one day of leave; I have to go back as soon as the activity ends."
Han Yangting said again: "If it's hard to get a taxi, let the driver take you back."
Bai Shuruo chewed on a fish ball and said: "No need to trouble yourself, I can just take a taxi to the subway station; it should be easy to get a taxi here. You should take Xiaofeng back to sleep after you finish eating; she must be very tired from playing today, she might even fall asleep in the car."
Han Yangting then said: "Fine, as you wish."
Silence once again.
After a while, Bai Shuruo asked again: "Mr. Han, there is something I would like to ask you, about the divorce agreement..."
"The divorce agreement is still kept with me," Han Yangting said.
"When... do you intend to sign it?"
"Are you in a hurry?" he asked.
"No, of course I'm not the one in a hurry." Seeing that he had misunderstood, Bai Shuruo said: "I heard that you have someone you want to marry."
Han Yangting leaned back in his chair, propping his head with his hand, and looked at her: "There has always been someone I want to marry."
Bai Shuruo felt another wave of heartache, but she forced herself to endure it, even smiling on the surface: "Since you have someone to marry, you should sign the divorce agreement sooner; don't delay that young lady."
He was still looking at her, his gaze as deep as a dark pool, unfathomable and unreadable; after a long while, he slowly asked: "Is it because you also have someone you want to marry that you want to divorce as soon as possible?"
"Me? Of course I don't," Bai Shuruo said.
"Or is it that you are preparing for blind dates and are afraid others will find out you are married?"
"Neither."
Han Yangting then asked: "Since it's neither, then what are you rushing for?"
"I just said it, I'm afraid of delaying you."
Han Yangting picked up a bottle of mineral water from the table, took a sip, and while tightening the cap, said: "I am very cautious about marriage; one cannot be in a hurry to marry, so naturally, one cannot be in a hurry to divorce, don't you think?"
Bai Shuruo: "..."
Bai Shuruo did not even know how she had returned to her residence.
Throughout the day, Han Yangting's words repeated in her mind: one cannot be in a hurry to marry, so naturally, one cannot be in a hurry to divorce.
What did he mean by that?
After returning, she lay on the bed.
The sky grew darker, and the light in the room grew dimmer.
Until her phone vibrated; she picked it up and took a look, it was Meng Ze.
Meng Ze said he was at the door and told her to open it.
Her heart gave a slight start, and then she went to open the door.
The hallway light was not very bright, and her room had no lights on; Meng Ze stood with his back to the light, making his face unclear and his expression blurred, and Bai Shuruo felt a hint of gloom on his face.
Her heart could not help but tighten.
For so many years, she had never guarded against him, but today she inexplicably sensed a signal of danger from him.
She hurriedly turned on the light, and after seeing Meng Ze's face clearly, she felt she had overthought it.
"I brought you some food," Meng Ze said.
Bai Shuruo looked at the food container in his hand and hurriedly said: "Why be so polite? I ate a lot this afternoon and I'm still full."
Meng Ze said: "You ate this afternoon, so you don't need to eat now? Just consider it a late-night snack."
Seeing Meng Ze's gloomy expression, Bai Shuruo felt bad about refusing his kindness, so she unfolded the small table in the room and said: "Look at how messy it is here, and the place is small; next time, don't bring food up to eat, the smell takes forever to clear out."
Meng Ze said: "When was your room ever not messy? Was it not messy when we were in Dali?"
To smooth over the atmosphere, Bai Shuruo said: "That's true, it's not like it's our first day knowing each other; as long as you don't mind."
What Meng Ze brought were two stir-fried dishes, as well as sushi, duck necks, and so on.
The two of them ate in silence.
Bai Shuruo was indeed not very hungry, so she ate little.
However, Meng Ze seemed quite unhappy; he asked her: "Could it be that you've grown tired of delicacies and aren't used to eating these street snacks anymore?"
"I really don't have much of an appetite," Bai Shuruo said: "Why are you acting strange today?"
"Strange?"
"You know I've always eaten little, and you never forced me to eat before; anything I couldn't finish, couldn't you just eat it yourself? Why can't you today?"
Meng Ze put down his chopsticks, pulled out a tissue to wipe his mouth, and then threw the tissue away: "Forget it if you don't want to eat."
Half the food remained; Meng Ze put it away, then tossed it into the trash can.
Bai Shuruo looked at this food, naturally feeling pained; she had always been thrifty, but she had neither a refrigerator nor a microwave in her room, so it could not be eaten if kept.
Having eaten his fill, Meng Ze showed no intention of leaving.
The room was very small; apart from a bed, there was only a small single-seat sofa, and Meng Ze sat on that sofa, showing no intention of leaving.
Bai Shuruo simply stopped minding him; the two had lived together for several years in the past, so if he wanted to sit for a while longer, let him sit.
But there was no television or other entertainment facilities in the room, so Bai Shuruo said, "Meng Ze, I'm going to read for a while, make yourself at home."
Since the small sofa was occupied by him, she sat on the edge of the bed to read.
However, just as she was reading, Meng Ze walked over and took the book from her hands.
Bai Shuruo looked up and saw the look in his eyes.
Most of the time, the look in Meng Ze's eyes was roguish and cynical; in short, it was not very serious.
But now, she read a different flavor in his eyes—it was the look a man gives a woman, a look of wanting to possess.
