Chapter 26: Returning to the Maiden Home (1)
As soon as Bai Shuruo returned home at noon, she smelled the fragrance of food in the house; there was stir-fried chicken and pork rib soup.
She saw Bai Shuhua wearing an apron and serving rice, while Han Yangting was not idle either, setting the table; the sight of the two men working was actually quite harmonious.
"Shuhua, you really are becoming more and more capable." Bai Shuruo walked over and praised him.
Bai Shuhua glanced at Han Yangting, not daring to say how much work he had actually done today, nor daring to say how many grievances he had suffered today.
It was useless to say anything; he could see that this household was still run by the brother-in-law, and his sister was also afraid of him.
Han Yangting, however, gave him a word of praise: "Shuhua is still quite capable; the work I let him do, he can do it all very well."
Bai Shuhua's little heart suffered another ten thousand points of critical damage.
With his brother-in-law staring from the side, could he afford not to do it well?
The three of them sat at the table to eat, and Bai Shuhua's appetite was better than ever. Having done so much work today, he was both tired and hungry; his hands were trembling when he picked up food. He didn't usually eat much chicken, but now he was eating one piece after another, quickly gnawing the meat off and then using his teeth to pick out the bones.
Just as he was about to pick up a chicken leg, Han Yangting took the chicken leg first and placed it in Bai Shuruo's bowl: "Ruoruo, you've worked hard at work, have a chicken leg."
Bai Shuruo quickly said, "Thank you, Brother Han."
Bai Shuhua felt even more aggrieved.
Who in this family was actually working harder?
While they were eating, Lin Wanfen called Bai Shuruo again: "Ruoruo, I just don't feel at ease in my heart. Why don't I come over and pick up Shuhua?"
Bai Shuruo covered her phone and said to the other two men at the table: "Aunt Fen said she wants to pick up Shuhua. Shuhua, do you want to go home?"
Bai Shuhua glanced at Han Yangting; if he said he wanted to go home at this time, wouldn't he be laughed at by his brother-in-law?
He simply said: "I don't want to, I still have to wash the dishes in a while."
Bai Shuruo then said to Lin Wanfen: "Aunt Fen, you don't need to come over. I will send Shuhua back this afternoon."
After finishing lunch, Bai Shuhua truly obediently went to wash the dishes and wiped the stove clean.
He wanted to return to his room to rest, but saw Han Yangting sitting on the living room sofa.
Their gazes met again.
Bai Shuhua's heart tightened, and he quickly asked for instructions: "Brother-in-law, I have finished washing the dishes. May I go back to my room to rest?"
Han Yangting beckoned, signaling him to come over.
Bai Shuhua walked over obediently.
Han Yangting took Bai Shuhua's textbooks and homework from the coffee table and said: "I just took a careful look at your homework and found that your comprehension is actually quite strong, especially in science subjects."
Bai Shuhua had originally been resistant in his heart; he was exhausted, and Han Yangting was actually still looking at his homework with him. He was almost about to lose his temper, but who knew that upon hearing Han Yangting praise him, his anger immediately vanished.
He was just about to proudly say, "That's right, the teacher also praises me like that; I've been smart since I was little."
But Han Yangting continued: "But you are too lazy."
Bai Shuhua's heart became resistant again.
Han Yangting added: "Actually, the intelligence of most people in this world is about the same. Whether they can succeed depends on whether they can overcome their own laziness."
Bai Shuhua took these words to heart.
Han Yangting added: "I have observed you for two days and have a preliminary understanding of you. You are mainly too playful. If you can put your energy into your studies, in time, you will definitely achieve good results."
Bai Shuhua understood that his brother-in-law was doing all this just to get him to study hard.
It was strange to say, but it was the same logic; he could accept his brother-in-law's way of teaching, but he was very resistant when it came to Lin Wanfen.
"Then I'll go do my homework first," Bai Shuhua said obediently.
Han Yangting didn't say much more, only saying: "Do it. After you finish your homework, I will take you home."
Counting it up, this was the first time Bai Shuruo had returned to her maiden home since getting married, so while Bai Shuruo was taking a nap, Han Yangting went to a nearby pharmacy to buy a few boxes of instant bird's nest and donkey-hide gelatin, and then went to a fruit supermarket to buy a large fruit basket.
After Bai Shuruo woke up, she told Bai Shuhua that she wanted to go out to buy some fruit. Bai Shuhua, who was writing homework in the living room, looked up and said: "Second Sister, Brother-in-law already bought it; everything is loaded in the car."
Bai Shuruo couldn't help but look at Han Yangting, who was checking Bai Shuhua's homework.
Han Yangting said without even raising his head: "Seeing that you were sleeping soundly, I didn't wake you up."
At that moment, Bai Shuruo's heart was inexplicably touched again.
Was it because of how focused he looked while checking Bai Shuhua's homework? Or because his posture while looking down at the notebook was particularly handsome? If they had children in the future, he should be a good father, right?
But then she shook her head.
No, Han Yangting was only a husband in name; it was impossible for the two of them to have children at all.
Han Yangting looked at the homework for a while, then called Bai Shuhua over: "You didn't read the question carefully on this geography problem. You haven't fully understood renewable resources and non-renewable resources. Go read the textbook for a while, then redo it."
Bai Shuhua had already been tamed to the point of having no temper left. If it were anyone else, he would have lost his temper long ago, but in front of Han Yangting, he was convinced and obedient.
They waited until Bai Shuhua finished his homework, and the sky was already turning dark. The three of them drove back to the Old Villa.
Bai Shuhua was exhausted; as soon as he got in the car, he leaned against the seat and fell fast asleep, not waking up until they arrived home.
Lin Wanfen had been waiting at the door of the house early on. Seeing the car drive over, she immediately ran over.
Bai Shuruo shook her younger brother awake: "Shuhua, wake up quickly, Aunt Fen is calling you!"
Bai Shuhua finally opened his eyes.
Seeing Lin Wanfen outside the window, who was both surprised and happy, he didn't say a word, but kept his head lowered, clearly knowing he was in the wrong.
"Shuhua, why do you look so tired? Did you not sleep well?" Lin Wanfen was heartbroken; she opened the car door and held Bai Shuhua's arm, being affectionate without stop.
As she spoke, she cried: "You child really don't make people worry. You were gone for a whole night. If it weren't for your second sister and second brother-in-law, I wouldn't have known where to find you."
"Mom, I'm fine." Bai Shuhua appeared a little impatient; he didn't want to be treated like a child.
"Aunt Fen, the reason Shuhua is so tired is because he finished his homework at my place and also helped me cook." Han Yangting walked over and spoke up for Bai Shuhua.
Seeing the tall, handsome, and polite Han Yangting, Lin Wanfen couldn't help but wipe away her tears. Although it wasn't the first time they had met, she was still stunned by the sight of him.
Of course, it wasn't out of lust for Han Yangting's good looks; when a woman reaches a certain age, seeing a handsome man usually doesn't make her want to sleep with him, but rather makes her think, "If only my son were like this too."
I wonder if Bai Shuhua will be this tall and this good-looking after she comes of age?
Because of Han Yangting, Lin Wanfen was especially warm toward Bai Shuruo after she had married: "Quick, quick, hurry inside, dinner is already made, eat before you leave."
Seeing that Han Yangting had bought so many things, her eyes crinkled into chrysanthemum-like folds again: "You shouldn't have bought anything just for coming over! From now on, you are our family's son-in-law; don't be so polite among family. Ruoruo, hurry and get slippers for your Mr. Han."
Bai Shuruo chuckled to herself; if Bai Shunan saw this scene, she would surely laugh until she was out of breath.
She looked at Han Yangting again.
This should be Han Yangting's second time at the Old Villa; the first time was when he came to propose marriage.
His manner after entering the house was familiar and practiced, even knowing that the gifts should be placed on the shelf to the right after bringing them inside.
He could even find the slippers in the entryway and knew to go to the first-floor guest bathroom to wash his hands.
It was as if he had lived in this home before.
But Bai Shuruo felt that was impossible; perhaps he just had a good memory and remembered it after one visit. I heard he has high academic qualifications, so maybe he has the talent of a photographic memory!
