Chapter 50: Leaving Without Saying Goodbye? Angry!
After exiting the residential complex, she hailed a taxi outside to the company entrance; because it was a morning flight, they had to rush to the airport.
There were nearly one hundred people going on this business trip to Xijiang; aside from some technical staff, most of the others were young people—young people have good stamina, good appearances, and are full of energy.
Bai Shuruo also saw Wang Xuekai and Zhang Yuanyuan.
It made sense; both were the campus heartthrob and the department beauty, and their images were the most qualified to represent the company on a business trip.
Among so many handsome men and beautiful women, Bai Shuruo felt she was just there to make up the numbers; after all, she had been notified at the last minute, while everyone else had been notified two days in advance.
Zhang Yuanyuan stood in the crowd, her shoulder-length hair dyed in the currently popular "granny grey," wearing a bright yellow down jacket and pulling a black suitcase covered in sequins. Seeing Bai Shuruo, she teased, "Doesn't a married woman need to stay home and keep her husband company? Running so far away for a business trip? Is your husband willing to let you go?"
Bai Shuruo paused, then returned a magnanimous smile: "My husband has a broad perspective; he doesn't mind a day or two."
After saying this, she walked to the other side to line up.
Zhang Yuanyuan glared at Bai Shuruo.
Wang Xuekai stood far away, chatting with a young, handsome man from the same department.
After waiting a while longer, two buses arrived, followed by a flurry of activity: loading luggage, boarding the bus, and listening to the tour guide explain the precautions.
After all the tossing and turning, it was already seven o'clock in the morning.
Han Yangting woke up on time at six o'clock in the morning.
When he got up, he passed by Bai Shuruo's room and saw that her door was open.
He couldn't help but go in to take a look; at this time of day, Bai Shuruo was usually still asleep.
As it turned out, upon entering, he found the quilt on the bed folded neatly, more than half the clothes in the wardrobe were gone, and the large suitcase she had arrived with was also missing.
He couldn't help but furrow his brows.
What was going on? Running away from home?
Because of that kiss last night?
Thinking of the way she had pushed him away at the time, it was as if he were some kind of beast.
He walked dejectedly to the living room, leaning against the sofa and staring blankly at the ceiling.
He felt a sense of failure he had never experienced before, and at the same time, he was very angry.
She had actually left without saying goodbye.
He picked up his phone and called her, but it wasn't answered.
He thought to himself, Bai Shuruo, I'll only give you half an hour; you must give me an explanation!
Half an hour passed...
He looked at his silent phone and thought again: Fine, I'll give you another half an hour!
Another half an hour passed...
The phone screen finally flashed; he picked it up immediately, but it was a call from his grandfather.
His grandfather was still in Beishi; although he had bought a villa in Fengcheng, it hadn't been renovated yet, and even if it were, it would need to air out for a good half year before he could move back in.
"Grandfather, you're up so early," Han Yangting greeted first.
Old Master Han chuckled, "Is it early? I've already been out for a run and come back. But you're a newlywed, why are you up so early too?"
"It was time, so I woke up."
"Where is Ruoruo?" Old Master Han asked.
"She... is at work."
"You really spoil her too much. If you ask me, you should just put her in our Baiyin Group, find a senior executive to mentor her, and let her gain some experience; she'll be able to handle it soon enough."
Han Yangting smiled, "One step at a time."
Old Master Han continued, "You've been living together for so long, do you feel like you can make a life together? If you can't, then get a divorce sooner rather than later; don't hold her back, and give her a substantial breakup fee when the time comes."
Han Yangting couldn't help but say, "Grandfather, are you questioning your grandson's charm?"
"How is that questioning your charm? I'm worried she doesn't have a common language with you. After all, since her family went bankrupt, the life she's lived is different from yours. She's grown up this big, she's never even been abroad, right? You studied abroad; can you two even communicate on the same level?"
"Even if you haven't eaten pork, haven't you seen a pig run? If I want to understand things abroad, I can just scroll through the news every day," Han Yangting said.
Old Master Han sighed helplessly, "Fine, I won't ask about your affairs, but your Second Uncle is celebrating his birthday next week, so you must come back."
"Alright, I will be back on time," Han Yangting said.
Bai Shuruo had called Han Yangting twice, but the line was always busy.
She had no choice but to send a WeChat message: Brother Han, I received a notice last night that I have to go on a business trip today for about a month to Xijiang.
After sending the message, she didn't see a reply, so she leaned against the seat and looked out the window.
She had barely slept last night, and now the bus heater was on, making it very comfortable; her colleagues were all drowsy, and she was the same.
The scenery outside the window was unchanging—buildings, green belts, and the grey, hazy sky; as she watched, she closed her eyes.
Her phone flashed, but she didn't know a message had come in.
After sleeping for about half an hour, they arrived at the airport, followed by another round of busyness and chaos: moving luggage, entering the airport, verifying nucleic acid tests, the guide taking roll call, and then distributing tickets and checking in luggage.
It had been a long time since Bai Shuruo had flown; when her father was alive, the whole family would go on vacation every year, but after her father passed away, she hadn't even left Fengcheng in order to save money.
Therefore, after entering the airport, she felt a wave of melancholy.
It wasn't until she boarded the plane that she took out her phone and saw a text message from Han Yangting.
Her heart trembled subconsciously.
It was a WeChat message from Han Yangting.
She had been worried that Han Yangting would blame her, but it seemed he didn't; his message was only four characters: "Have a safe trip."
The fewer the words, the more one's imagination runs wild.
He must be angry; he must blame her for leaving without saying goodbye.
She closed her eyes and pondered.
At this moment, a flight attendant came over to remind them to turn off their phones.
Before powering down, Bai Shuruo saw that her phone seemed to have received another message, but before she had time to look, she had already pressed the power-off button.
Forget it, she would look at it after getting off the plane.
Flying from Fengcheng to Xijiang required a transfer, and there was another connection in between.
Throughout the journey, she had been sitting next to a girl from the Human Resources Department named Lin Shan; the two had similar personalities, both being quiet, and they quickly became acquainted, chatting idly.
It was already evening by the time they arrived in Xijiang.
Xijiang had a high altitude and was many times colder than Fengcheng; Bai Shuruo put on her only down jacket, but she still felt so cold she was shivering, thinking she would go out later to buy some warm supplies.
They could stay in a hotel in the city for the first night, and the two of them shared a room.
Just after they settled in, the guide took them downstairs to eat.
After the meal, she went nearby to buy thermal clothing and only then remembered that she hadn't turned her phone on; she wondered what the content of that later message was.
However, when she opened WeChat, she was surprised to find that the message was gone.
The shops here closed early, and she couldn't worry about it so much; she and Lin Shan bought thermal underwear, as well as scarves, hats, snow boots, and heat packs, and after all that fuss, the night had passed.
By the time she came back and soaked her feet, it was already past eleven o'clock at night.
After much hesitation, she decided not to call Han Yangting so as not to disturb his rest.
Fengcheng.
Han Yangting had worked out tonight and taken a shower, after which he went to the bar to open a bottle of red wine, drinking while waiting for a call.
He had sent her a message in the morning telling her to call him back when she arrived, but it was already past eleven o'clock, and he still hadn't received her call.
It seemed that once this young woman left home, she was like a kite with a broken string, flying off freely.
In the past, she listened to him simply because she felt she lived off him and ate his food, which was why she was so obedient to him.
Feeling depressed, he downed the glass of red wine in one gulp, poured another, and drank again.
