Chapter 67: Squabbling
Bai Shuruo walked inside and saw her aunt and her cousin Dazhu sitting in the living room, with Lin Wanfen sitting on the other side.
Although Lin Wanfen had looked worldly and calculating for her own benefit over these years, she was actually a paper tiger.
Lin Wanfen forced a smile: "Two thousand yuan isn't even enough to pay for Shuhua's tutoring classes."
"But this two thousand yuan is essentially money you got without working for it; doesn't the feeling of sitting at home and picking up money feel good?"
The corners of Lin Wanfen's mouth twitched: "If that's how Big Sister feels, then so be it."
Bai Shuruo felt that Lin Wanfen's appearance was cowardly.
Yet she herself was not much better.
As soon as she arrived, Lin Wanfen acted as if she had grabbed a life-saving straw: "Ruoruo is back? Oh, hurry in, are you hungry, thirsty? Do you want to drink some water?"
While speaking, she kept giving Bai Shuruo eye signals.
Lin Wanfen had agreed over the phone to let Bai Shuruo help shoulder some of the pressure.
"Aunt Fen, I'm neither thirsty nor hungry," Bai Shuruo sat down in front and politely called out to her aunt: "Aunt."
The aunt turned to look and saw it was actually Bai Shuruo; she couldn't help but snort coldly: "Why are you back? I heard you got married, so why didn't you hold a wedding banquet? Are you afraid that I, your aunt, can't afford the gift money?"
"Next time," Bai Shuruo said.
"Next time?"
Everyone in the room looked at her.
Bai Shuruo: "..."
Sigh, she was truly not good at small talk.
She just said it straight: "Aunt, why did you come over today?"
The aunt stopped talking about that matter and brought up the issue of household registration: "Isn't my grandson about to start elementary school? After thinking it over, we still want to get him into Hu Xiao, but Hu Xiao's enrollment is limited to this community, so I wanted to register my grandson's household under your address. But Lin Wanfen refuses to agree, worried it will take up her quota. We are all relatives, is there any reason to reject someone like this? Her daughter Bai Shuhua still has at least 15 years before she even has kids."
Bai Shuruo said: "Aunt, please don't make things difficult for Aunt Fen."
"Aunt Fen? She's just your stepmother. Nine out of ten stepmothers are poisonous, yet you still side with her. If she hadn't forced you, would you have married before graduating from university?"
"It has nothing to do with Aunt Fen; I wanted to marry myself. Aunt Fen has had it hard these years too. It's not like your grandson has no school to attend; he should just go to the school where his household registration is, to save the trouble."
"Trouble?" the aunt said: "Where is the trouble?"
"Aunt, you live in Chengnan, which is 15 kilometers away from Hu Xiao. It wouldn't be convenient for you to pick him up and drop him off every day," Bai Shuruo tried her best to be reasonable.
"Doesn't she have an empty room? When the time comes, she can clear one out and I'll rent it," the aunt had boasted in front of her daughter-in-law, saying that her grandson's elementary school matter was all taken care of by her.
Hu Xiao is one of the top public schools in Fengcheng; getting into Hu Xiao is like having one foot in a key middle school. Many people spend millions to buy houses nearby just to get into Hu Xiao.
Bai Shuruo said: "That would still be troublesome. Your grandson needs to eat after school, right?"
"I'll cook it myself; I won't eat Lin Wanfen's food."
"Then you have to pay rent, and you still have to cook for the child. What about your home? Besides, it's not good for a child to leave their parents and only follow their grandmother."
Lin Wanfen listened to the conversation between Bai Shuruo and the aunt from the side, feeling both worried and anxious. With Bai Shuruo speaking so slowly and reasonably, not only would she not win the argument, but she would also lose her momentum.
Sure enough, the aunt's son Dazhu couldn't hold back any longer. He stood up abruptly, pointed at Bai Shuruo, and cursed: "Cousin, don't be such a nagger. We are all relatives; what's wrong with relatives asking you for a small favor? Enough with the nonsense, just tell me, are you going to help with this favor today or not?"
Although Bai Shuruo had a good temper, she had always been someone who wasn't afraid of trouble. She looked up at Dazhu and said: "We can't help. You should find another way."
"You... I really admire you idiots; we are cousins after all."
Bai Shuruo refused to soften. She knew that once she agreed to move the grandson's household registration over, the whole family would likely move in gradually and then slowly refuse to leave. By then, Lin Wanfen and Bai Shuhua would probably be driven out.
So Bai Shuruo repeated the same thing: "I'm sorry, we can't help."
Dazhu had been a hoodlum since he was a child. Seeing that Bai Shuruo was soft and weak yet still adamantly refused, his temper flared even more: "I'll beat you to death!"
Just as he was about to slap her, a cold and sharp voice suddenly came from the doorway: "Stop!"
Everyone looked toward the door.
They saw Bai Shunan walk in, her exquisite and sculpted features showing a cold and indifferent expression. As soon as she entered, she roared: "Who dares to hit my sister?"
As soon as Bai Shuruo saw Bai Shunan arrive, she knew her savior had come.
She felt ashamed that her sister had to save the day every time; she needed to learn more from her sister.
Bai Shunan walked in front of Bai Shuruo and blocked Dazhu with her body: "What are you here for?"
Dazhu was a little afraid of Bai Shunan, but Bai Shunan was a woman after all. He straightened his back and tried his best to put on a fierce look: "To, to register the household, to register it under your family's address!"
Bai Shunan said: "You clearly have household registration in Chengnan, why are you registering under someone else's?"
"To make it convenient for my son to go to school."
"Your son going to school, what does that have to do with us?"
"He is your cousin, how does it not have anything to do with you?"
Bai Shunan sneered: "Don't try to claim relations with us here. Back when my father was seriously ill, did you have us cousins in your hearts? Didn't you all hide far away? Now that your son needs to go to school, you want to build a relationship with us? No way! Don't come again in the future, otherwise Aunt Fen will call the police and treat you as trespassing."
"You woman, how can you be so heartless?"
"Get out," Bai Shunan said coldly.
Seeing this, the aunt couldn't help but point at Bai Shunan and curse: "Nannan, how can you be so heartless too? Look clearly, I am your own aunt, and Lin Wanfen is just your stepmother."
"No matter what, she served Dad for several years, so she should be the one to make the decisions for this house!"
"You, very well then..." the aunt said indignantly: "You won't help with this favor, right? Then, then I will go out and badmouth you. I will let everyone in this neighborhood know how heartless you all are!"
Bai Shunan pointed at the door: "Go ahead!"
Seeing Bai Shunan so decisive and resolute, the aunt couldn't help but say: "Fine, I'm going right now!"
The aunt and Dazhu left, but before Dazhu left, he glared fiercely at Bai Shunan, looking as if he wanted to kill her.
Bai Shunan crossed her arms and watched the mother and son leave coldly; she didn't take them to heart at all.
As soon as the aunt and Dazhu left the house, they started shouting outside: "Neighbors, come out and take a look, see how these heartless women inside treat their relatives. I am their own aunt, and today I asked them for a favor, but they didn't give me any face at all..."
There were quite a few houses near the Old Villa, and because there was a scene to watch, people soon gathered around.
One of the older gentlemen recognized the eldest aunt, and he couldn't help but ask, "Eh, isn't this little Hua from before? How did you become like this?"
"Uncle Wang, you still remember me?" The eldest aunt was pleasantly surprised, thinking she had found a backer.
