Chapter 97: Feeding Her Potato Chips

~8 min read 1,593 words

Bai Shunan lost track of time once she got busy, and it wasn't until 11:30 at night that she finally lifted her head from the pile of documents.

Today, Ling Feng had come in and out several times, refilled her coffee twice, and even brewed a pot of chrysanthemum and goji berry tea, keeping it in a thermos.

She drank the last half-cup of goji berry tea, then leaned back against the chair to rub her temples before letting out a sigh.

Once she finally felt refreshed, she stood up and picked up her bag.

She had been living in the office for several days now, so she decided to go home tonight to take a shower and change her clothes.

Ling Feng had left a Mercedes-Benz at the company, claiming it was a public vehicle contributed to the company, but the keys were with her, and she could drive it whenever she wanted.

Everyone else in the company had already left; only the lights at the front desk were on, and the security guard was keeping watch outside.

"President Bai, you're here so late every day, you need to be careful and get some rest." The security guard was a 40-year-old veteran, and he also felt sorry for Bai Shunan.

Bai Shunan smiled: "It's alright, it hasn't been that hard."

Then the security guard pointed to a black sedan outside: "That person has been waiting outside the whole time; they said they were waiting for you."

Bai Shunan paused.

It was late at night, the streetlights were dim, and the spring air was chilly; a car was parked on the curb in front of the company.

It was Gu Yunting's car; the interior dome light was on, and Gu Yunting was looking at his phone inside.

Perhaps hearing voices from this side, Gu Yunting looked over in this direction. Seeing Bai Shunan, he put away his phone and quickly got out of the car.

"Why so late?" Gu Yunting asked as he walked up to her. He must have had the heater on in his car, because when he got close, she felt that his clothes were warm.

Bai Shunan smiled faintly: "When I was at the Gu Corporation, I was a model employee; which day didn't I work overtime until the early hours? Now that it's my own company, I have to work even harder."

Gu Yunting looked embarrassed.

That Bai Shunan could stand on her own two feet was not because she was born with the ability, but the result of her willingness to put in the hard work.

Of course, a part of it was also because he had forced her.

"What exactly is the matter that you came to find me today?" Bai Shunan asked.

Gu Yunting said: "Can we talk in the car? It's so late, let me take you home."

"Thank you for the kind offer, President Gu, but my company has a car," Bai Shunan refused.

Gu Yunting was a little angry: "Bai Shunan, it was my fault before; can I apologize to you?"

Bai Shunan squinted slightly: "Oh, which part was President Gu wrong about?"

"I... I always thought the person I liked was Mo Wanqing, but what I didn't expect was that the person I like... is you."

After saying this, he watched Bai Shunan's reaction.

As the dignified eldest young master of the Gu family, he had only confessed to two women in his life: one was Mo Wanqing, and the other was Bai Shunan.

Yet Bai Shunan acted as if it had nothing to do with her: "How did President Gu arrive at that conclusion?"

"During this time that you haven't been by my side, the person I've been thinking about has always been you," Gu Yunting said, and then he tried to pull Bai Shunan into his arms.

But Bai Shunan pushed him away at the right moment, and she smiled faintly: "Is this all President Gu came here to say to me today?"

"Yes," Gu Yunting said.

He had been saving up his deep affection for several days, wanting to express it in this moment.

But he hadn't expected that his deep affection would be like a stone hitting cotton, failing to trigger the collision he had expected.

Bai Shunan stared steadily at Gu Yunting: "Has President Gu ever heard the saying that 'late-coming affection is cheaper than a dog'? Besides, you like this one today and that one tomorrow; you sleep with one today, and when the other comes back to beg you tomorrow, your heart softens again."

Gu Yunting grabbed her hand: "To prove my sincerity, I can invest in you—one hundred million."

Bai Shunan shook off his hand again and said mockingly: "One hundred million to play with a woman? The price is indeed a bit high. But there's no need, President Gu; you're too late, I already have an investor."

"Too late?" Gu Yunting asked her angrily: "Is it because of that guy named Ling Feng? I've already checked; Ling Feng is a playboy, and the number of women he's slept with in Beishi is more than you can imagine."

"It's not because of him, it has nothing to do with anyone. I just want to manage my company well right now; I don't want to think about anything else, especially romantic entanglements. Goodbye, President Gu."

Bai Shunan pressed the car key in her hand; the Mercedes-Benz was parked right at the company entrance. She got in the car and drove away.

After the car had driven a distance, she glanced at the rearview mirror and saw that Gu Yunting was still standing where he was.

Her chest still ached faintly, but she didn't stop and continued driving forward.

……

The weekend.

Bai Shuruo had a rare chance to sleep in.

She was quite glad now that, although she and Han Yangting were a married couple in name and reality, he did not require her to share a bed with him; if that were the case, she reckoned she wouldn't be able to get a good night's sleep at all.

When she got up, she didn't see Han Yangting, but there was bread and milk on the dining table.

She took the bread and milk to the sofa and turned on the television, seeing that the startup page was on a sports channel; presumably, Han Yangting had stayed up late watching the game last night.

She simply started watching the soccer match.

She wasn't a soccer fan; she usually only watched during the World Cup, and even then, she was picky about the teams, preferring to watch teams with handsome players, like the German team.

It just so happened to be a replay of a German team match. She was drooling over the handsome guys on the German team, but the team ended up causing a huge upset, which made her lose interest. Seeing snacks on the coffee table, she grabbed a bag of potato chips and started munching on them.

As luck would have it, Han Yangting returned.

He was carrying a bag of fruit and snacks in his hand; presumably, he had just gone downstairs to buy things.

When Bai Shuruo saw him return, she couldn't help but stand up to greet him: "Brother Han."

He walked over and placed the fruit and snacks in front of her, and seeing that she was watching soccer, he couldn't help but sit down next to her.

"Does Ruoruo like watching soccer too?" Han Yangting asked with a smile.

"It's alright," Bai Shuruo said.

"You only watch during the World Cup?"

"That's right."

The replay had already finished, and it was now commercial time on the TV, but neither of them changed the channel; they both stared at the television.

Fortunately, after a short while, the next replay began.

It was rare for Bai Shuruo to focus all her attention on the match, but just then, Han Yangting suddenly leaned in close to her and pulled her into his embrace, letting her rest against his shoulder.

She looked up at him, puzzled.

"It's less tiring to watch the game this way," Han Yangting explained.

Bai Shuruo wanted to say, there's no way to watch it properly like this, okay?

Leaning against his shoulder, she couldn't concentrate at all. However, he was holding her quite tightly, and if she refused directly, it would seem as though there was distance between husband and wife.

Seeing the bag of potato chips she hadn't finished, she couldn't help but use it as an excuse: "Brother Han, I want to eat some potato chips."

Han Yangting didn't let her get up, but instead reached out with his long arm and grabbed the potato chips.

He didn't let her take them either; he took out a chip himself and fed it into her mouth.

It was over; she felt there was no way to watch this match anymore.

After feeding her one, Han Yangting asked again, "Does Ruoruo want more?"

With things like potato chips, once you start eating, you can't stop; they were so fragrant and crispy.

She nodded.

The next chip was originally meant for her, but just as she opened her mouth, before she could eat it, he put it into his own mouth.

She pouted aggrievedly.

He didn't chew it, though, but instead held the chip between his teeth and leaned toward her lips, signaling for her to come and bite it.

Bai Shuruo was stunned; would it be better to eat it, or not to eat it?
