Chapter 37: Encountering Yan Fanqing

~7 min read 1,229 words

Su Xiyan thought, maybe she should still go to the guest room and make do for a night; that would also let Yan Moci calm down.

But thinking of her mysteriously lost Jade Ruyi, and also the Jade Ruyi belonging to Yan Moci.

There must be some connection between these two identical Jade Ruyis; it's a clue for her to find her birth parents!

After taking a long breath, Su Xiyan encouraged herself.

Su Xiyan, stay calm, be professional—you're going in to investigate the truth of the Jade Ruyi! You must maintain absolute rationality and objectivity, absolutely cannot let Yan Moci seize the initiative!

After successfully finishing her mental preparation, Su Xiyan pushed the door open and entered.

Entering the room, she saw the bed was just as she had left it, the quilt piled high over the pillow.

Su Xiyan murmured strangely, "Are you asleep?"

She closed the door and walked in, but the next second she was shoved to the doorframe, a fierce aggressive aura rushing over her.

Su Xiyan exclaimed in surprise, "Yan Moci, you're actually behind the door..."

Before she could finish, her words were all blocked by Yan Moci, replaced by faint, broken moans.

She mewed like a cat, "Yan Moci, let me go."

"Yanyan, it's clearly you who's clinging to me." hearing Yan Moci's wicked, lascivious laugh.

Su Xiyan, embarrassed, tried to pull back her hand that had instinctively clung to Yan Moci, but he stopped her, instantly turning passive into active.

Yan Moci's body was scorching, leaving Su Xiyan at a loss; he wanted to drag her into endless decadence, but she still had more important matters!

"Yan Moci! This isn't right!"

Before her reason turned completely to ash, Su Xiyan finally pushed Yan Moci away.

Although he hadn't had his fill, Yan Moci, having tasted sweetness, stopped his advance at the right point.

Looking at Su Xiyan, her eyes close and flowing, her gaze soft and silky, Yan Moci teased her:

"We're husband and wife, aren't we? Isn't it only natural for a couple to do this?"

Su Xiyan lightly bit her lower lip, "We're just a contractual husband and wife."

Yan Moci's gaze darkened, he didn't like her saying that, "If you're willing, I can..."

Afraid Yan Moci's words would throw her off balance, Su Xiyan interrupted, "Yan Moci, is that Jade Ruyi in the study yours?"

Su Xiyan's words instantly doused Yan Moci's heated passion; he frowned, pondering, and asked:

"Why are you asking this?"

Su Xiyan rolled her eyes, "I happened to notice it when I went to the study; that Jade Ruyi is especially cute, I really like it."

Su Xiyan deliberately hinted to Yan Moci, could he give her that jade pendant?

But unexpectedly, Yan Moci didn't take the bait; he just absentmindedly replied:

"Really? Since you like it, tomorrow let Dongzi take you to Imperial Essence Workshop to buy whatever you want."

After saying that, Yan Moci turned over, pulled the covers over himself and went to sleep, completely lacking his earlier domineering fervor.

Hearing Yan Moci's tone, as if he were brushing off a vain lover, Su Xiyan's heart suddenly turned cold.

She stood there, in the midst of the scorching midsummer heat, yet felt an endless winter chill.

What exactly was she hoping for?

Clearly she had already prepared herself mentally, hadn't she?

Clearly she had always treated Yan Moci with respect as Jiafang Baban, yet now she felt hurt because he refused her rude request.

This isn't right; she's always been calm and rational, yet after Yan Moci woke up just a few days ago, she's repeatedly been swayed by his emotions.

Heck, is it really that the domineering CEO's charm and advances easily make one addicted?

Such her, truly too humble, too embarrassing.

Su Xiyan's gaze gradually became tranquil yet icy; when she looked at Yan Moci, the feelings in her eyes had already vanished like smoke.

She couldn't even be bothered to care about Yan Moci's attitude just now, as if it were just a perfunctory act; she pulled the covers over herself and lay down as usual, as if in her eyes Yan Moci was still a vegetative person, never having awakened.

The room's allure vanished, because of the clear Wei-Jin style dip in the middle of the quilt between them.

Only loneliness and cold remained in the room.

The next day, when Yan Moci woke up, the person beside him had already left.

Thinking of what happened last night, he tightly shut his eyes, a flash of regret crossing them.

Yan Moci always knew Su Xiyan was different from other girls; she wouldn't fall for him just because of his status and appearance, but last night he indeed sensed a loosening in her attitude.

But all of this, because of that jade pendant, has returned to square one.

No, Yan Moci even felt that Su Xiyan's newly rebuilt mental defenses were as solid as rock, impervious to water.

Yan Moci felt an inexplicable anxiety in his heart, he contacted Dongzi,

"Where did the Eldest daughter-in-law go early this morning?"

Dongzi, "The Eldest daughter-in-law first went to see Old Madam Su early this morning, then went straight to the city library."

Yan Moci frowned, "The library? What is she doing at the library?"

Sensing Yan Moci's irritability, Dongzi cautiously replied, "Going to the library, perhaps to borrow books?"

Yan Moci snapped, "I don't want 'perhaps'! Follow her—I need to know exactly what she's doing at the library!"

"Yes!"

After seeing her grandmother early in the morning, Su Xiyan headed straight to the newspaper archive section of the city library; twenty years ago the internet was still scarce, and even with her godlike hacking skills she couldn't find something that simply doesn't exist online.

After a night's sleep, Su Xiyan had completely severed the seven emotions and six desires that would only weaken her resolve; tragic love stories of lovelorn men and women might look good, but she had no need to experience them herself.

The wise avoid the river of love; the resentful repeat their mistakes.

Entering the newspaper archive, the fragrant scent of books filled the room, making her heart even calmer.

It was still early; there were only a few people in the library, sitting in twos and threes at the tables, sunlight streaming through the tall floor-to-ceiling windows, tranquil and beautiful.

When Yan Fanqing saw Su Xiyan, she was sitting at the window-side table; a morning sunbeam fell exactly on her hair, lightly kissing her amber locks, yet thoughtfully not shaking her eyes.

The glasses perched on her delicate, high nose bridge look unreal in the reflection, leaving one unable to tell what kind of eyes this exquisite girl actually has.

Occasional page-turning sounds, the "shush-shush" white noise, make one unconsciously sink into it.

Feeling a bit weary, Su Xiyan took off her glasses, rubbed her temples, picked up an iced Americano and took a sip to refresh herself.

Feeling a gaze that constantly fell upon her, Su Xiyan slowly lifted her head.

Yan Fanqing's breath caught; those were eyes extraordinarily bright and beautiful, and the tear mole beneath them was bewitching like a demon.

Forming a stark contrast, the gaze looking over was icy cold.

Even after seeing his appearance clearly, there was still no ripple; Yan Fanqing, who always succeeded, instantly narrowed his eyes.
