Chapter 14: Wasn't it agreed we'd eat together?
A few days later, Wen Ling chose the time after work to wait downstairs at Zhou Yinhe's company.
She deliberately chose a conspicuous red backless short dress, her brown long hair slightly curled, draped over her body half covering, revealing her fair back skin, she also held a bundle of black-wrapped red roses, at this moment leaning on a limited-edition blue-gilded supercar just shipped from M Country, attracting many white-collar workers' gazes.
Wen Ling's eyes flickered slightly; she wanted everyone to see her.
Zhou Yinhe stood before the floor-to-ceiling scenic window looking down; his eyesight was excellent, he clearly saw the flamboyant Wen Ling, and pressed his lips.
Jiang Jibai stood beside him, and with a puff laughed: 'She seems no different from before.'
Zhou Yinhe lowered his gaze, the only eldest daughter of the M Country wealthy Wen family, spoiled since childhood and unrestrainedly flamboyant, she had done many astonishing things to pursue him back then, causing everyone in Sijiucheng to know, yet he just liked this type, and now using this approach, he had figured out his preferences.
Jiang Jibai, seeing his expression, patted his shoulder and said lightly: 'If you want to go, go; but I also want to remind you, back when you begged her like that lowly, she still wanted to break up, and the same can happen now.'
That's all he had to say; as for whether Zhou Yinhe could take it in, he didn't know either.
They all grew up together in the same big courtyard since childhood; among them Zhou Yinhe was the youngest, and everyone unconsciously indulged and pampered him to this day; their parents' deep affection and family harmony could be said to have suffered no grievance, yet they stumbled badly over Wen Ling.
Jiang Jibai sighed and left, taking the elevator straight to the parking lot to avoid meeting Wen Ling.
Wen Ling waited downstairs for a long time, but her mood remained good; until the dusk's afterglow gradually faded and the sky darkened, she then proactively called Zhou Yinhe.
Zhou Yinhe answered, but his voice was cold: 'What's up?'
'I'm waiting downstairs at your company.' Wen Ling's voice unconsciously took on a coquettish tone: 'You haven't gotten off work yet?'
'I've already gone home.'
Wen Ling pressed her lips upon hearing that, her shoulders slumped, she forced herself not to show her hurt feelings, and softly said: 'Didn't we agree to have dinner together?'
'No need.' Zhou Yinhe said and hung up.
Wen Ling stood there dazed for a long time, until the night wind turned cool and made her a bit chilly, then she moved her stiff body.
She bit her lip, lowered her gaze at the red roses she held, let out a soft sigh, lifted her eyes to the towering skyscraper before her, only when her eyes grew sore did she withdraw her sight; in a blink, the tears accumulated in her eye sockets streamed down her cheeks and fell onto the petals.
She held the flowers and walked a few steps, bent over to place the flowers on the roadside bench, spaced out for a while before returning to the car and driving away.
Zhou Yinhe still stood by the window looking down, his dark eyes revealing no emotion, until Wen Ling's car left did he go downstairs.
The sanitation auntie holding flowers was about to leave; Zhou Yinhe strode over and stopped her, calmly saying: 'Auntie, I'll buy this bouquet from you.'
The auntie exclaimed: 'No need to pay me; I picked this up from that bench over there, it's yours.'
Zhou Yinhe took it, noticing the abrupt droplets on the flowers, his fingers twitched; he pulled out his wallet from his suit pocket, took out two bills and handed them to the auntie, tossed a thanks and left.
Wen Ling drove aimlessly until passing a coastal park, where she found a parking spot and stopped.
She walked in slowly, saw a girl standing on the seaside path holding a microphone with accompaniment singing; Wen Ling sat on the bench opposite her, curling her lips listlessly watching her sing.
Relying on my love for you, I cling to this tiny scheme.
Without you, I lack the ability to forgive myself.
Wen Ling pressed her lips, covered her face with her hand and took a deep breath; since childhood she didn't like crying, even the scar on her knee from falling while playing games with partners as a child she never cried over, and would smile while comforting partners frightened by her wounds.
Now I don't know what's wrong; I can't help but tear up.
She listened silently until the song switched to the next one, then after composing herself she stood up, walked to the girl, took out her phone to scan the code; the girl softly said thanks, Wen Ling smiled with curved eyes and praised her.
'You sing very nicely.'
Wen Ling turned and left, sat in the car when her stomach suddenly growled, only then realizing she should have dinner.
'Hmph, the bastard who stood me up.' Wen Ling gave a soft hum, as if the low mood just now wasn't hers.
She called Lu Zhaoye, probably already calmed down; Lu Zhaoye answered quickly.
'What's up?' Lu Zhaoye still had that lazy demeanor, only hearing a 'hiss' sound, probably the lighter.
Wen Ling half-leaned on the steering wheel, muffled: 'In Sijiucheng there's no one to accompany me for a meal.'
Lu Zhaoye snorted laughingly, said: 'Who let you go?'
'Otherwise you could come to Sijiucheng, then we could still have a meal together.' Wen Ling negotiated with him: 'Anyway you're just playing around in M Country, Hua Guo also has many fun places.'
Lu Zhaoye lightly exhaled the smoke from his mouth, offhandedly said: 'The things I play with in Hua Guo can't be played.'
Oh right, Wen Ling recalled, she gave a small eye roll, disdainfully said: 'Just play then; sooner or later you'll ruin yourself.'
Lu Zhaoye bluntly retorted: 'Just keep chasing Zhou Yinhe; sooner or later you'll become a lovesick dog even dogs despise.'
Wen Ling hummed, said to Lu Zhaoye: 'Tomorrow help me ship my kitten over.'
Because she didn't know how long she could stay in Hua Guo, her grandfather liked cats but lacked patience, Wen Zhuo was busy with family affairs, only Lu Zhaoye idled around playing all day, so Wen Ling sent her kitten to Lu Zhaoye for him to take care of.
After being stood up by Zhou Yinhe tonight, Wen Ling felt this was a protracted battle; still, having Lu Zhaoye ship her kitten over would let her rest easy watching it.
'Fine, you're my ancestor, your kitten is my little ancestor.' Lu Zhaoye drew out his tone helplessly.
Wen Ling didn't want to hear her complain about herself, she hung up, started the car, pressed the accelerator and headed home.
And Lu Zhaoye leisurely wandered into the cat's room, saw that stupid cat sitting in the cat nest licking its fur, he stepped forward, squatted down, ruthlessly ruffled the cat's head twice, gloated: 'Your mom's awesome, you have to chase men while dragging yourself along; tomorrow you'll have to fly yourself, you'll suffer.'
The cat glanced at him askance, swiped a paw, leaving three long scratches on Lu Zhaoye's hand back.
Lu Zhaoye cursed, stood up and glared at the cat: 'I treat you well with good food and drink, yet you hit me? No conscience! Just like your mom!'
The cat puffed up and hissed at him: 'You're getting it! Who let you insult my mom!'
