Chapter 148: Unable to Find Someone Who Understands Me Like You Do
Wen Ling hung up the phone and called Lu Zhaoye back.
"Did you hear clearly? Zhao Xingtang's words."
Lu Zhaoye grunted, his tone very different from usual, quite serious and earnest: "She won't say who's behind it, A Ling—do you want me to go pressure her?"
Wen Ling refused, "No, let's hold steady for now and see what happens later before deciding whether to act."
She gave a cold laugh and said lightly, "If it's really as she said and she understands me, then she should know what kind of person I am. If you really push me to the edge, well, we'll just go down together."
"Don't say that." Lu Zhaoye's tone was unpleasant: "You just got Zhou Yinhe back not long ago—can you bear to lose him?"
Wen Ling smiled instead: "I can't bear to lose him, so if it ever comes to that, I'll take him with me, and in the next life we'll pick up where we left off."
Lu Zhaoye muttered a curse and hung up disparagingly.
Wen Ling took a cigarette pack from her bag, opened the car window and lit a cigarette; beyond the skyscrapers, the sunset gradually sank, and Wen Ling gazed blankly as the ember at her fingertips slowly burned.
Even before coming, she had already guessed roughly what would happen, so after Zhao Xingtang finished speaking, she actually felt no inner turmoil.
But she was considerate; to satisfy Zhao Xingtang's desire to watch the drama, she put on a good performance with her acting skills.
Whether Zhao Xingtang believes it or not, she doesn't know; anyway, she truly feels she should go into showbiz as an actress, otherwise it would be a real waste of her acting talent.
The cigarette had burned down to the filter, and Wen Ling drove home.
Seeing Zhou Yinhe waiting by the underground parking garage elevator, she ran over and jumped straight into his arms.
"Baobao, do you miss me especially?" Wen Ling pressed her forehead to his, blinked, and asked, "Tell the truth."
Zhou Yinhe curled his lips, "I miss you, speaking frankly."
Wen Ling wrinkled her nose, hugged him tightly with a soft heart, "You're the best, the very best."
"Yeah, so from now on don't leave me behind to go out and eat with others." Zhou Yinhe raised a hand to stroke her long hair while leading her into the elevator upstairs.
After arriving home, Zhou Yinhe didn't let go of her; instead he held her as he walked to the living-room sofa before setting her down.
Wen Ling looked at him doubtfully, a familiar scent reached her nose, and she lowered her head to look.
The table was full of the meat snacks she usually likes, plus a few bottles of alcohol.
"Wow, you really are." Wen Ling stared at Zhou Yinhe in shock, "When did you prepare this?"
"Just now, seeing you never eat properly, I prepared some." Zhou Yinhe pulled her to sit on the rug, opened a can of alcohol and handed it to her.
Wen Ling took an excited sip and praised, "Baobao, what would I do without you? I'm afraid I'll never meet someone who understands me as you do again."
This made her firmer in her dark inner thought; when that day comes, she must take Zhou Yinhe with her.
Thinking this way also made her feel a bit guilty toward the Zhou family, so she asked
"Shall we stay a few days at Feng Qi Yuan tomorrow?"
"Why? No thanks." Zhou Yinhe frowned, recalling how Ning Qing guarded against him as if against something, and directly refused.
"Come on, come on, I also want to go play with Auntie." Wen Ling readily took his hand and shook it, then begged cutely, "Come on, okay?"
Zhou Yinhe narrowed his eyes at her, somewhat unable to read her thoughts and intentions, but Wen Ling had him completely under her sway—when she acted cute, he couldn't refuse.
The next day, Wen Ling held the two cats, while Zhou Yinhe carried two suitcases and put them in the car; the suitcases held the clothes they'd need for those days.
Hehe and Heng heng were already used to riding in the car; once inside, they obediently lay down in the back seat.
Ning Qing still didn't know they were coming back; at that moment she was receiving guests at home.
These were the ladies from various families who attended that charity banquet; since the event was hosted by the matriarchs of the Zhou and Jiang families, they all gave face and donated quite a bit, and Ning Qing, unwilling to be the sort of person who uses people then discards them, invited them to her home as guests.
Feng Qi Yuan occupies a vast area; besides the main building villa and front and back gardens, it also has Ning Qing's huge sunroom.
The ladies sat in the sunroom, laughing as they chatted about recent gossip from Sijiucheng, while Ning Qing sat in the chief seat, speaking softly with Madame Jiang.
Although it was a thank-you banquet, Ning Qing's status was evident there, so she naturally wouldn't casually chat with others.
Only Shang Zhiyu was in the villa; at that moment she was in the living room drinking fresh juice the butler had given her, eating peeled nuts, and watching a melodramatic TV drama.
Seeing Wen Ling and Zhou Yinhe return, she jumped up delighted, walked over to Wen Ling, and reached out to take the cat from Wen Ling's arms.
Both cats had undergone thorough examinations, confirming there was no chance they could harm Shang Zhiyu in the slightest; Wen Ling felt relieved handing over the now-smaller Heng heng to her, but as for Hehe, she still worried a bit—after all, he's big and heavy, what if he misbehaves?
"Heng heng, do you want to see Auntie?"
She also treats Heng heng as Zhou Yinhe's own son; by seniority, shouldn't she call her aunt?
The scene was a bit odd; the butler who looks after Shang Zhiyu covered his mouth and chuckled.
Zhou Yinhe and the servant went upstairs together to deliver the suitcases, meanwhile hanging up Wen Ling's clothes; Wen Ling sat on the sofa with Shang Zhiyu, linking arms and acting cute: "I miss you and Auntie, that's why I wanted to come stay a few days."
"Well, my mom and I are more than happy to welcome you." Shang Zhiyu beamed, "You don't know—since you went back, Mom has from time to time mentioned you, wanting to come see you but afraid that Xiao Wu would find her bothersome."
Wen Ling recalled when Ning Qing had come to see them before, and besides reminding them not to stay home all the time, she also couldn't help laughing at Zhou Yinhe's expression.
"Where's Auntie?" Wen Ling looked around, didn't see Ning Qing's figure, not even the steward of Feng Qi Yuan was present, and the servants were fewer as well.
Shang Zhiyu said, "Those ladies from Sijiucheng are here, and Mom is keeping her company in the rear sunroom."
Only then did Wen Ling recall that Ning Qing had mentioned this while chatting with Madame Jiang; "Then I'll go to the back and say hello to Auntie."
Shang Zhiyu nodded, "Go ahead then; I won't go."
Wen Ling smiled, gave Shang Zhiyu's belly a little rub, then went through the back door, past the glass corridor, and arrived at the sunroom.
Ning Qing's spot couldn't see her; a few ladies had already noticed her.
"What is this?"
That day, Wen Ling entered the venue late because of Wenhuai and Qin Siqing, and left early; those ladies hadn't all gone to where they drank coffee, so only those few who were on relatively good terms with Ning Qing had seen Wen Ling.
Ning Qing turned her head in doubt, and upon seeing Wen Ling, her normally composed image vanished instantly.
She rose happily, Wen Ling had already approached her, and affectionately said, "Auntie, do you miss me?"
She was so pretty, and her coquettish tone made Ning Qing's heart go soft; Madame Jiang beside her also felt envious to the point of inability.
"Miss, I miss you a lot."
