Chapter 30: My Cat Can Do a Backflip

~8 min read 1,457 words

Zhou Yinhe parked the car at the entrance of Lang Po Wan, Wen Ling hesitated for a moment, but still wanted something to happen with Zhou Yinhe.

"You… do you want to come in and sit for a while?" Wen Ling blinked her eyes and said, "My cat can do a backflip."

"……" Zhou Yinhe tilted his head, frowned, and looked at her.

"Really! I swear! I just want you to see." Wen Ling raised her hand, looking sincere.

Zhou Yinhe's heart kept wavering, his fingers tapping impatiently on the steering wheel, until Wen Ling placed her hand on his arm and gave it a light squeeze, after which the scales in his heart tipped completely.

"Which building?" he asked lightly.

Wen Ling's eyes lit up, and she reported the location: "Building 7."

The car stopped at the entrance of Building 7. After getting out, Wen Ling pointed to the neighboring building and introduced it to Zhou Yinhe.

"Building 8 is where Aunt Zhou and her family live; I live in Building 7 myself."

Zhou Yinhe nodded, his expression blank on the surface, but he actually felt a little nervous inside.

Wen Ling went to the door lock, scanned her face and pressed her fingerprint to open the door; Hehe was already sitting in the entryway waiting for her.

Wen Ling hugged it and said to Zhou Yinhe, who was following behind her, "This is Hehe; he's already three years old."

Hehe stared at him unblinkingly, his paws pressing on Wen Ling's arm as he kneaded; Wen Ling seemed unaware of the tense atmosphere between the person and the cat, turned around and shoved Hehe into Zhou Yinhe's arms.

Zhou Yinhe froze, then immediately hugged Hehe in a fluster; Hehe also stretched out his claws to hook onto Zhou Yinhe's suit jacket.

Wen Ling, seemingly oblivious, changed her shoes and went to the living room, leaving the airplane-eared Hehe and the even more nervous Zhou Yinhe.

Zhou Yinhe bent slightly, and Hehe jumped out of his arms; Wen Ling had already walked back with Hehe's snacks, saw a large tear in Zhou Yinhe's suit where it had been hooked, and was somewhat surprised.

"Sorry, Hehe doesn't usually act like this. Even when I left him with Lu Zhaoye before, he never behaved this way. Maybe he's just nervous because he hasn't seen you before."

Zhou Yinhe pressed his thin lips into a straight line; hearing Wen Ling mention that name, he felt somewhat annoyed.

Wen Ling pulled him into the living room, pressed him onto the sofa, and said, "Wait here a moment; I'm going to change clothes."

Zhou Yinhe watched Wen Ling leave, had no choice but to lower his gaze and withdraw his sight; the moment he stepped inside, he already felt a bit regretful about coming in.

Hehe sat not far away, cautiously watching him; seeing that he seemed to pose no threat, he inched step by step toward the sofa, finally jumped up and lay beside Zhou Yinhe's leg.

It meowed twice, and only then did Zhou Yinhe look at it.

Zhou Yinhe reached out, slowly placing his hand on it; seeing that it didn't dodge, he dared to pet it.

I don't know how long passed; Wen Ling came downstairs from upstairs, Zhou Yinhe heard her footsteps, looked up, and his mind went blank for an instant.

Wen Ling wore a black strapless sleep dress, the hem reaching only to her thighs, the lace trim revealing skin that was snow‑white and delicate.

Zhou Yinhe forced his gaze away, his fingers clenched, veins bulging on his neck, his Adam's apple bobbing continuously.

Wen Ling suppressed a smile, feigned puzzlement as she sat beside Zhou Yinhe, and asked, "What's wrong with you? Why did your face suddenly turn red? Are you running a fever?"

As she spoke, she was about to reach out to touch Zhou Yinhe's forehead.

As she raised her arm, the other strap slipped down, soft and snow‑white, half‑covering, half‑revealing; Wen Ling seemed not to notice, and kept moving closer.

Zhou Yinhe suddenly jerked back, Wen Ling was unprepared, and lunged straight into his front.

Wen Ling lifted her gaze to him, feeling Zhou Yinhe's whole body go rigid, his face quickly flushing,

"Why are you dodging me? I just want to feel your forehead to see if you have a fever." Wen Ling insisted on acting innocent, leaning against Zhou Yinhe to stroke his forehead.

Zhou Yinhe grabbed her arm, gritted his teeth, and said, "Wen Ling, you're doing this on purpose."

"What do you mean, on purpose?" Wen Ling tilted her head, innocent and pure; Zhou Yinhe knew her too well, so he wanted to get up and get away.

Who would have thought Wen Ling would directly lift her leg and straddle him, burying herself in Zhou Yinhe's arms on purpose to rub against him—only then did he realize she wasn't wearing anything at all?!

Just as he tried to push her away, Wen Ling grabbed his hand and let out a soft, coquettish moan, making Zhou Yinhe's whole body grow even more tense.

"Baobao, I really miss you; I think about you every night." Wen Ling openly told him her longing.

Zhou Yinhe felt that the person before him seemed like the one from last night's dream, waterweeds tightly entwining him, impossible to dodge or escape.

"Wen Ling." He enunciated her name syllable by syllable; Wen Ling seemed unable to hear the warning in his tone, reached out and gently brushed his face, her eyes full of longing.

When their lips met, Wen Ling slowly opened her eyes, locking gazes with Zhou Yinhe's widened eyes.

Beside them, Hehe suddenly cried out a few times, waddled over to the pair, and curiously stared at them.

Wen Ling sat up, a little shy, and said, "How about we go upstairs?"

At that moment, Zhou Yinhe suddenly pushed Wen Ling away; she fell unprepared onto the carpet, dazedly lifting her head to look at him.

"I'm leaving." Zhou Yinhe tossed out the words coldly, turned and was about to go; Wen Ling scrambled to her feet, chased after him, and tightly hugged him from behind.

"I really miss you; I know you miss me too. Why won't you get back together with me?" Wen Ling bit her lip, she could sense Zhou Yinhe's soft spot for her, and she was already completely certain of it at the banquet tonight.

What she wasn't sure about was whether Zhou Yinhe's reluctance stemmed from cherishing their feelings from three years ago or from being unable to forget.

Even if Wen Ling knew that in the original book Zhou Yinhe at this point had not forgotten her, she still couldn't be certain, fearing that her awakening might affect the world of the book.

"Wen Ling, I admit I can't forget you, and I always go soft when you approach or scheme, but I don't want to be with you anymore. Three years ago, when I begged you, didn't you say you'd never regret it? Now that you regret it, do I have to accept it all?" Zhou Yinhe's tone sank slightly, though there was no discernible rise and fall; he reached out and gradually pried open Wen Ling's hand, then said coldly, "I'm petty, you know that."

Wen Ling bit her lip and whispered, "I know you don't want to be with me, but you now……

Zhou Yinhe lowered his gaze to himself, then suddenly pulled the corner of his mouth into a light chuckle: "What? Is Miss Wen just suddenly feeling a whim to find someone to do that kind of thing, or are you preparing to cultivate a long‑term, no‑strings‑attached arrangement?"

Wen Ling's head had already been dazed by desire; hearing Zhou Yinhe's words, she stared blankly for a long while before reacting, then said foolishly, "I only want you."

Zhou Yinhe had to admit that Wen Ling's words stirred his heart, but he feared getting trapped and never being able to get out—once bitten by a snake, ten years afraid of grass ropes; he dreaded falling again into Wen Ling's love‑trap, only to be cruelly cast aside in the end.

Wen Ling's mind had long been clouded by longing; hearing Zhou Yinhe's words, she stared blankly for a long while before reacting, and then said foolishly, "I only want you."

Zhou Yinhe must admit that Wen Ling's words stirred his heart, but he fears getting involved and never being able to get out—once bitten by a snake, he fears grass ropes for ten years; he is terrified of falling again into Wen Ling's enchanting trap, only to be ruthlessly cast aside in the end.

"I don't want you." he said coldly.
