Chapter 50: A Toad Critiques Humanity
"Don't keep trying to fool me." Chu Yao shook off her hand, coldly saying: "I'm easy to deceive, but I won't let someone deceive me repeatedly."
Ruan MiaoMiao's eyes reddened, she stepped forward and opened her mouth to explain, but after Chu Yao glared at her she stopped.
Chu Yao turned back to look for her, hurrying in case someone would bully Wen Ling.
Wen Ling leaned against the edge of a round table, sipping her drink, boredly glancing around at the male and female guests who were looking at her with strange eyes.
Those invited were all the prominent young masters and misses of Sijiucheng, each someone who knows how to have fun; now they gathered in small groups, while Wen Ling stood alone in their midst, looking quite out of place.
She also couldn't be bothered to manage it, and wasn't worried that Chu Yao would be deceived again by Ruan MiaoMiao's sweet talk; she was just a bit bored.
Next, the fun arrived.
A man in a Western suit walked over, his hair slicked back, looking especially confident in himself.
Wen Ling blinked at him, and he arrogantly said: "Miss Wen, right?"
"Yeah, that's me. And you are?"
Upon hearing that, the man let out a snort-laugh: "I'm the heir of Sijiucheng's Jin Shi Group, Jin Ming."
"Wow, impressive." Wen Ling set her glass on the round table, smiled slightly, and gave a light clap.
Chu Lin stood not far away, casually drinking, eyes narrowed as he watched them.
Whose idiot is this? How did he even get in?
Chu Lin seriously thought back for a moment.
Oh, it's the Jin Family's; since we'd cooperated recently, we sent them an invitation.
But he wouldn't intervene; everyone said the Wen Family's only eldest miss was a spoiled, domineering person no less than his own sister, so he wanted to see how this eldest miss would handle the matter.
Jin Ming grew more confident, scanning Wen Ling with a wanton gaze, and said arrogantly: "Just knowing is fine, Miss Wen. I've heard you once used your power to bully others and have a poor character, but I don't mind that. Even if you once followed the Fifth Young Master, I'd still accept you. Why not follow me? At least others in Sijiucheng would also give you some face."
Upon hearing that, Wen Ling braced her hands on the tabletop, slender fingers gripping the edge, bent over with head down, her delicate figure trembling continuously.
The onlookers were all bewildered, only hearing Wen Ling's amusement leak from her lips, reaching the ears of those around.
"Wait, wait a moment." Wen Ling waved her hand, forcibly suppressing her amusement, then said with a light smile: "Now even a toad can critique humanity?"
Jin Ming frowned and snapped: "You dare mock me?!"
"What's wrong with mocking you? Don't say you're just some messed-up heir of the Jin Family, young master. Anyone here who dislikes me, who dares to criticize me to my face?" Wen Ling slowly straightened, her eyes turning cold, and stepped forward slightly in her high heels.
She curled her lips slightly: "Only you are stupid."
Jin Ming, flushed with anger, raised his hand to strike her, but Wen Ling lifted her hand, used skillful force to pinch his wrist, making him yelp in pain; she then stomped hard on the back of his foot with her high heel, and while he was dazed from the pain, she lifted her leg and kicked him.
Jin Ming's yells were loud; he stumbled back a step, fell to the ground, and rolled about clutching his head where it had been kicked.
Wen Ling ignored the noise, lowered her head to adjust her dress, and complained: "The skirt is still in the way."
The surroundings fell silent, everyone afraid to speak lest they provoke the Wen Family's eldest miss, who was so ruthless when she took action.
Jin Ming groaned in pain while gritting his teeth: "I won't let you off."
Wen Ling lowered her gaze at him, then reverted to that gentle, obedient eldest miss, speaking softly: "You'd better worry about whether the Wen Family will let your Jin Family off."
Only then did Chu Lin step forward, slowly walking to the security and saying: "Take him away."
The security guard grabbed Jin Ming's arm and roughly dragged him out of Chu Jia Zhuangyuan; the Jin Family's driver and other families' drivers were chatting together, and out of the corner of his eye he saw a figure thrown to the ground that looked like their young master, so he ran over.
"Young master! Young master! What's going on?" He helped Jin Ming up and questioned the security guard.
The security guard lowered his eyes and gave a cold smile: "Young Master Jin, you've ruined our miss's birthday banquet; later our master will personally come to your house to pay a visit."
Jin Ming, sweat covering his face and lips gone white, strained: "No, no, no, it wasn't me; clearly that lowly woman hit me—what right does Mr. Chu have to come to my family?"
The security guard tossed him a contemptuous, mocking smile and turned to leave.
On the way, Chu Yao happened to meet the two security guards dragging Jin Ming; the guard told her the whole story, and she angrily kicked him again.
What the guard said was also what Chu Yao had instructed the guard to relay.
She quickened her pace; the invited guests stared at Wen Ling as if she were a flood beast, and she snapped: "What are you looking at? Ah Ling is someone I invited!"
Wen Ling gave her an indifferent smile; Chu Yao walked up to her and said guiltily: "It's all my fault—I shouldn't have gone to see Ruan MiaoMiao, otherwise that idiot wouldn't have come to bother you."
Wen Ling chuckled lightly: "You know my reputation outside—do you think I'd let him bully me? I already struck back."
Chu Yao was somewhat shocked; she had thought Jin Ming was someone her brother had sent to beat her, but she hadn't expected that the seemingly delicate Wen Ling before her would personally throw the punch.
"What's wrong? Do you think I can't throw a punch?"
"No, no." Chu Yao shook her head vigorously: "It's just—I just think you don't look like someone who would throw a punch."
"My grandfather feared I'd be bullied, so when I was young he had me study judo with my childhood friends." Wen Ling shrugged: "It's fine—I only earned a white belt."
Chu Yao swallowed, recalling how she had previously mocked Wen Ling, and felt relieved she hadn't been beaten.
Chu Lin looked at his sister's surface words, a flicker of smile in his eyes, stepped forward and said to Wen Ling: "Miss Wen, this matter is our Chu Family's oversight; I will personally come to apologize and make amends."
Wen Ling curled her lips: "No need, anyway I already struck back." As her words fell, she gazed toward the door and sighed: "It's just a shame—he probably won't be able to function as a man anymore."
Her voice wasn't loud; only the Chu siblings could hear it clearly. Chu Lin inexplicably felt a chill run through his body, while Chu Yao gazed at Wen Ling with an expression of admiration.
"Ah Ling, can you teach me?"
Although she has a notorious reputation in Sijiucheng, she has never personally gotten her hands dirty—after all, she has many lackeys around—but seeing how formidable Wen Ling is, she seriously wants to learn.
Wen Ling gave her a doubtful glance, feeling that this Chu eldest miss was unlike her original storyline—she seemed simple-minded and overly familiar.
Could it be that her rebirth has altered the original plot?
Wen Ling nodded, about to speak, when a security guard rushed over and whispered something to Chu Lin beside him.
Chu Lin's expression slightly tightened, then he said: "Please let him in."
