Chapter 6: Love‑brain, even zombies disdain it

~7 min read 1,292 words

Zhou Yinghe forcefully suppressed the urge to step forward and hug Wen Ling, only lightly asking: "What are you doing? The party is about to start."

He looked at the suit draped over Wen Ling's body, then saw the man standing close to Wen Ling wearing only a shirt, his gaze cold as an ice blade, the man shivered in fright.

Ruan MiaoMiao saw him, ran to Zhou Yinghe's front, urgently saying: "Senior Zhou Yinghe, my elder sister slandered me for pushing her, but I really didn't, I have no reason to do this."

Wen Ling gave Zhou Yinghe a bleak look, lowered her eyes, pursed her lips, tightened the suit she was wearing; the onlookers, seeing this, again felt doubtful.

Jiang Jibai turned his head to look at Zhou Yinghe, seeing Zhou Yinghe's jaw clenched, fists tightly clenched, he knew Zhou Yinghe felt distressed for Wen Ling, he sighed, walked to Wen Ling and squatted down, calmly saying: "Whether you fell yourself or someone pushed you, first change your clothes, or you'll catch a chill."

Wen Ling tilted her head, looked at the expressionless Zhou Yinghe, bit her lip and nodded.

She struggled to stand, even staggered a step and almost fell; in Wen Ling's peripheral vision she saw Zhou Yinghe step forward, saw Jiang Jibai quick-eyed and quick-handed support her, then she stopped her steps.

After Wen Ling steadied herself, she pushed away Jiang Jibai's hand, slowly walked to Zhou Yinghe's front, speaking in a moderate tone: "You know, I once fell into the manor lake and almost drowned; since then I haven't dared to even take a bath."

Zhou Yinghe moved his jaw, but said nothing.

Wen Ling averted her gaze and brushed past Zhou Yinghe.

She didn't need to explain, after all the one who fell into the lake was her, but she feared Zhou Yinghe being controlled by the original book's plot, and believed Ruan MiaoMiao's words.

Whether the people around said or did anything, whether they believed it or not, she could ignore it; but if Zhou Yinghe doubted her, she might break down.

After Wen Ling left, Ruan MiaoMiao was still explaining to Zhou Yinghe; Zhou Yinghe frowned, looked down at Ruan MiaoMiao, and said coldly: "You mean Wen Ling, in order to frame you, doesn't care about her life?"

Hearing this, Ruan MiaoMiao hurriedly shook her head and explained: "It really wasn't me who pushed her; she fell herself, Senior Zhou Yinghe, please believe me."

Zhou Yinghe coldly regarded Ruan MiaoMiao, the hostility emanating from his whole body caused the onlookers to keep their distance.

Ji Wanruo and Li WanZhen ran over, behind them also came people who had heard the news and were unaware of the situation.

The two, in the auditorium, heard someone say someone had fallen into the water by the lake, seeming to have been pushed, and instinctively thought it was Ruan MiaoMiao pushed by Wen Ling, so they hurried over.

But now this situation…

Ruan MiaoMiao was explaining to Zhou Yinghe, while Wen Ling's figure had disappeared.

The two could only go up and ask Ruan MiaoMiao.

"What's wrong, MiaoMiao? What's going on?"

Seeing the two, Ruan MiaoMiao directly grabbed their hands and pushed them forward, saying: "Senior Zhou Yinghe, these two were once Wen Ling's good friends; you can ask them—they know Wen Ling's nature best—it really was her deliberately jumping in to frame me!"

The two glanced at each other, quickly understood, and said: "Wen Ling used to be arrogant and domineering, achieving her goals by any means; since she wants to frame MiaoMiao, she would even risk her life to do so."

Zhou Yinghe suddenly laughed, looking at the three people before him, as if he were looking at some joke.

Others don't know, but could he not know? Wen Ling's fear of water goes so far that she once didn't dare to take a bath, and even needed him to accompany her for a shower; to frame someone like Ruan MiaoMiao who is nowhere near her, could she really not care about her life?

Although Wen Ling abandoned him, making him hate her to the point of gritting his teeth, he had never believed those baseless, unfounded rumors.

Zhou Yinghe couldn't be bothered with the three people anymore, his light gaze flicked once more at the man who had tailored Wen Ling's suit, then he turned and left.

Jiang Jibai couldn't help smiling, walked along with them; Qi Zhan, who never harbored those twists and turns in his heart and couldn't read others, scratched his head in puzzlement, seeing the two walk away, hurriedly chased after them.

On the small road only the three of them were present; Qi Zhan curiously asked: "How come I don't understand? What's the situation?"

Jiang Jibai raised an eyebrow, lifted his chin at Zhou Yinghe, who walked ahead radiating dissatisfaction, and teased: "It's because of Xiao Wu, a love‑rivalry dispute."

Zhou Yinghe's brows were locked, he turned his head to look at him.

Jiang Jibai approached him, corners of his mouth turning up, and casually said: "You're so certain it was Ruan MiaoMiao who pushed Wen Ling?"

"What do you mean?" Zhou Yinghe said coldly and sternly.

"Women, for the sake of love rivalry will do anything; the fact that Wen Ling fell into the water is itself suspicious; even if Ruan MiaoMiao were stupid she'd know not to act in public, yet Wen Ling fell in public—what a coincidence!"

Jiang Jibai looked at Zhou Yinghe's increasingly dark face, laughed and continued: "You think Wen Ling is a pushover? If she were, she wouldn't have taken over the Wen Family, later handing the business to her adopted brother, and come alone to Hua Guo."

Zhou Yinghe's eyelid twitched, he narrowed his eyes, tone unfriendly: "You can't be biased against her just because he once dumped me; only I know how afraid of water she is, she would never risk her life to frame someone." He turned and continued walking, his tone firmer: "Don't look at her through colored glasses!"

Jiang Jibai held back his laughter; Qi Zhan finally understood the situation, frowned at his good brother's angry back, and asked, knowing the answer: "Is he?"

Jiang Jibai: "Mm, love‑brain, even zombies disdain it."

"……" Qi Zhan agreed: "Mm, you're right."

Wen Ling returned to the car, picked up the clothes prepared in advance and put them on; after she finished changing, the driver Lao Liu got in and asked her: "Miss, are we going back?"

Wen Ling had originally wanted to go back to attend the party, but after thinking she decided otherwise; she had just forced herself to overcome her fear and jump into the water, and now her heart was still pounding.

"Go home."

Lao Liu saw her pallid face, her hair still dripping wet, fearing she'd catch a cold, he slammed the brake to the floor, and while waiting at the red light he sent a message to the family doctor to wait at the miss's villa gate.

As soon as Wen Ling got out of the car, the family doctor Qiao Hongyun ran over, first taking her temperature with a thermometer gun, then taking her pulse.

Wen Ling wordlessly withdrew her hand, looking at this doctor aunt who had looked after her since childhood.

"Aunt, what are you doing?"

Qiao Hongyun urgently said: "Any discomfort? Dizzy? That lake water is so filthy—did you swallow any? Aunt will check you, quick."

Wen Ling helplessly said: "Aunt, I really am fine."

"No, need to check to be reassured; your grandfather repeatedly ordered me to send you a weekly physical‑exam report, and if you got sick your grandfather would certainly blame us for poor care."

Wen Ling: "……"
