Chapter 38: The Troublemaker Dan Yuyue
Zhao Gaoyang always had a delusional confidence that Fan Xi and he were a perfect match; even though he had sobered up quite a bit after being lectured by Xu Heng last time, his ego had gradually inflated and returned him to his original state.
He personally believed that since he was the one paying for this dinner, everyone coming out to eat together was meant to be his foil and to set the mood for him.
As long as Fan Xi sat next to him, once the atmosphere was right, he would confess his feelings, and it would be hard for Fan Xi not to agree.
Yet the reality was that Fan Xi had run straight over to Xu Heng, didn't even look at him, and the two were even whispering to each other, looking intimate as they ordered food.
What kind of situation was this?
Was he paying for this meal just so these two could get romantic?
Zhao Gaoyang's chest heaved, so angry he could have ground his teeth to dust.
Of course, he wasn't the only one feeling depressed at the table; Ying Ziyun also had a sullen expression.
Much like what Sheng Bo had guessed, Ying Ziyun had sat next to Sheng Bo just to see what kind of attitude Xu Heng had toward her.
She had been quite happy when Xu Heng sat beside her without hesitation, but she hadn't expected Fan Xi to sit down there too; the two of them sandwiched Xu Heng in the middle, and Xu Heng still didn't speak to her, instead whispering away with Fan Xi.
Ying Ziyun pursed her lips, watching the two of them chatting happily, then looked around; everyone was either huddled in pairs chatting, or like Sheng Bo, playing Snake by themselves for hours.
Well... there was also Zhao Gaoyang, but at least Zhao Gaoyang had Cheng Huaiyu to chat with him every now and then; only she sat in this awkward position, as if she had been isolated.
"Let me tell you, you can't be impatient when pursuing a woman; you must take it slow and steady," Cheng Huaiyu whispered, imparting his "insights" to Zhao Gaoyang. "Actually, a conservative little woman like Fan Xi is very easy to win over; as long as you do what Brother tells you, there won't be any problems."
He told Zhao Gaoyang not to be anxious, but watching Xu Heng and Fan Xi chatting happily while he couldn't get a word in, how could Zhao Gaoyang not be anxious?
At this, Cheng Huaiyu said: "Look at you, you're already failing like this, how are you going to chase her? First, you have to understand that girls like generous men; you can't be calculating over petty, trivial matters. Do you intend to cut off her right to speak to other men once you're with Fan Xi?"
"This..." Zhao Gaoyang frowned, falling into deep thought.
"Right now, Old Xu is talking to Fan Xi, so just let them talk. It's even better if Old Xu can build a good relationship with Fan Xi; you're roommates with Xu Heng, so wouldn't it be simple to have him help you pass on a message or express your feelings later?" Cheng Huaiyu continued to advise. "Don't be afraid of Old Xu stealing Fan Xi from you. Based on my year of observation, Old Xu is a deeply affectionate person at his core. Look at him sitting next to Ying Ziyun but chatting with Fan Xi—can't you understand what that means?"
"You mean he's doing this for Ying Ziyun to see?"
"Right! He just wants to tell Ying Ziyun, 'Look, I'm doing just fine without you.' Men, you know, definitely have a bit of a competitive streak when they're out."
Cheng Huaiyu said confidently: "If you trust me, don't do anything right now, don't wear a sour face either; eat harmoniously, and things will naturally fall into place."
After listening to Cheng Huaiyu's dating tutorial, the girl-chasing techniques Zhao Gaoyang had learned from the "Ultimate Male God" seemed to have reached a new level, attaining a state of sudden enlightenment.
Cheng Huaiyu was right! A man must be generous!
No matter how Xu Heng and Fan Xi were acting, what he should do now was stay calm and present his best self to Fan Xi!
Zhao Gaoyang puffed out his chest and sat up a few degrees straighter.
Fan Xi and Xu Heng weren't actually talking about much; it was mainly that Xu Heng had failed a course last semester, and Fan Xi was asking him if he had finished reviewing over the summer break and if he was confident about passing.
Xu Heng laughed and said he had only focused on playing at home, so how could he have had the heart to study.
"Then if you fail again, won't you have to take classes with the freshmen?"
"It's fine, anyway I see there are quite a few pretty little freshmen in our School of Liberal Arts this year; maybe I can trick a couple into coming back with me," Xu Heng said nonchalantly.
Hearing this, Fan Xi rolled her eyes and said coquettishly: "Disaster is already imminent and you're still thinking about picking up girls? Aren't you afraid of getting a demerit from the school?"
Xu Heng spread his hands: "I already know I'm going to fail the make-up exam, so I might as well think about the benefits of retaking the course in advance to comfort myself."
"Don't think like that. There are still two weeks until the make-up exam; if you memorize the key points highlighted by the teachers during this time, there's still a chance you can pass."
"But I didn't really listen to the classes in the latter half of last semester."
"I have notes; I can lend them to you if you need them," Fan Xi said politely.
Xu Heng took the opportunity to tease: "Then why don't you, Class Monitor, help me tutor personally? Your GPA is so high, teaching a slacker should be a piece of cake, right?"
He had originally just been joking, but Fan Xi glanced at the silent Ying Ziyun not far away, met her icy gaze, then smiled and turned her attention back to Xu Heng.
"Alright, it just so happens I'm taking the English CET-6 this semester, so I can help you tutor while I'm at it. What time do you go to the library every day?"
Now it was his turn to be awkward; he had just blurted that out subconsciously, and in reality, he had no desire for Fan Xi to help him tutor. Moreover, he had his own stock trading and novel-writing matters to handle every day, and he didn't want outsiders to know about these things for the time being.
So he declined, saying forget it, it would be too embarrassing to waste your time.
Fan Xi said: "It's no trouble. It doesn't take me many hours to do two sets of CET-6 papers every day; I can squeeze out two hours to help you with some professional course knowledge, so you can pass that make-up exam."
When she said this, she and Xu Heng were leaning very close; that faint, elusive fragrance drifted into Xu Heng's nose, and the curves hidden beneath her T-shirt were shapely and alluring.
Usually, a little boy like Zhao Gaoyang who had a crush on her would definitely be nodding his head off right now.
But who was Xu Heng? Could he not see that Fan Xi was saying these things with the intention of competing with Ying Ziyun?
However, he found it strange why Fan Xi would want to compete with Ying Ziyun.
Because Fan Xi's relationship with him didn't seem to have reached a very deep level; even if it were a good friend venting for a friend who had just been dumped, at most she would badmouth Ying Ziyun behind her back, there was no need to deliberately get close to him and act ambiguous to irritate Ying Ziyun.
Or perhaps Fan Xi and Ying Ziyun had a grudge from before, but Xu Heng knew very well that the two had had no contact at all, and didn't even know each other's names.
Thinking of this, Xu Heng smiled helplessly: "Since the Class Monitor says so, then I will respectfully comply."
He wasn't a pretentious person, and since Fan Xi was helping him out of kindness, he couldn't keep refusing.
After chatting for a while, the dishes were brought out one after another, and the waiter placed the beer on the table, asking if they wanted them opened.
Who knew that Dan Yuyue would become unhappy upon seeing the Snow logo, shouting: "What's so good about drinking beer? Young Master Zhao is paying today, it wouldn't be right not to have some hard liquor, would it!?"
