Chapter 59: Club Recruitment
By the third week of the semester, the three grade levels other than the freshmen had begun to settle into their regular coursework.
During the physical education elective, Sheng Bo chose swimming, while Cheng Huaiyu was urged by Dan Yuyue to choose badminton, exactly the same as her.
Zhao Gaoyang, meanwhile, giggled on the side, saying that Fan Xi had chosen tennis, so he had chosen tennis too; that way, the only people they would know in the tennis class would be each other, and there would be many more opportunities for interaction.
Cheng Huaiyu patted him on the shoulder and said, "Not bad, old Zhao. I didn't expect that even though you look like a wimp, you have so many devious tricks up your sleeve."
Zhao Gaoyang grinned: "How is this being devious? This is called great wisdom. Do you understand? Great wisdom."
"Fine, fine, great wisdom. I hope that tonight you can use your great wisdom to help me beat that BeastRace expert who just arrived as a freshman."
"Doesn't matter, the Frost Dragon will make a move."
"Make a move your ass! If you bring out the Frost Dragon again, I'm cutting ties with you."
The daily life in the dormitory consisted of Zhao Gaoyang and Cheng Huaiyu bickering and messing around. Xu Heng listened to their laughing and cursing, thought it over, and checked the basketball box on the physical education elective column on his computer.
Just then, his Penguin avatar flickered. Xu Heng clicked it open and found a message from Fan Xi, asking him which physical education class he had chosen.
"Basketball."
Fan Xi: "How did you think of choosing basketball! I thought you would choose the tennis class~ 【Crying】"
"Because I know how to play basketball, so I don't have to worry about failing the exam."
Fan Xi: "【Covering mouth and laughing】 【Covering mouth and laughing】"
Fan Xi: "Then I'll choose basketball too."
"Didn't you already choose tennis?" Xu Heng asked with some curiosity. Zhao Gaoyang had used his Loess Plateau-style voice in the dorm to tell everyone that both he and Fan Xi had chosen the tennis class.
"You can change your PE class once. Although basketball is quite hard, I still want to have classmates I know when I'm in PE class." Fan Xi followed up with two grinning emojis.
"Zhao Gaoyang is in the tennis class too," Xu Heng reminded her.
Fan Xi: "【Laughing and crying】 Do you think he looks like he's going to take a tennis class?"
Xu Heng felt that Class Monitor Fan had a point; Zhao Gaoyang really didn't look like he was going to class, but rather like a male guest going to participate in *If You Are the One*.
Fan Xi: "Alright, I won't chat with you anymore. It's club recruitment today, and I have to go help out at the Student Union. Bye."
The freshmen's one-week military training had just ended this week, and the National Day holiday was approaching. Usually, schools would not arrange freshman courses at this point, so this was the best time for club recruitment, and most clubs chose this week to carry out their recruitment activities.
Xu Heng thought of the only club he was in at university and turned to ask Cheng Huaiyu behind him: "Is our Esports Club recruiting?"
"Recruiting my ass. Everyone who joins the group chat is just asking if the club provides free computer usage. A bunch of poor losers, what kind of Esports Club is that!" Hearing Xu Heng's question, Cheng Huaiyu seemed to be angered into laughter and said: "There's something even more ridiculous. I said our club activities are held at internet cafes and we participate in Internet Cafe Tournaments regularly, so there's no free computer usage, and then a freshman asked me if the club covers internet fees?"
"Damn, Old Xu, you tell me if these people have congenital cognitive impairments. I already said it wasn't free, and they still asked me if I covered internet fees. I blocked every single freshman who asked those questions." Cheng Huaiyu took two deep breaths to calm his agitated emotions.
Zhao Gaoyang laughed from the side: "So now our Esports Club is notorious among the freshmen. Everyone is cursing us online, saying we're stingy, have no benefits, and are a fake club, telling people not to join the Esports Club. There's even a freshman who applied to start an ElectronicGameClub specifically to oppose us."
"Holy crap! There really is one? They cover internet fees? I applied to join." Sheng Bo searched the school forum, found that there really was an ElectronicGameClub, and immediately added their group owner as a friend.
Cheng Huaiyu said: "Bo Bo is doing well, infiltrating the enemy's interior to make an important contribution to dismantling the enemy's forces."
"No, I really think their club benefits are quite good. Look." Sheng Bo pointed at the group announcement for Cheng Huaiyu to see, "They hold friendly matches every week. Not only are there prizes for participating, but you also get academic credits."
"You traitor!"
"Cheng Ge, it's not that I want to defect! The enemy's treatment is just too good!"
"If this goes on, we're going to be devoured by them. Cheng Ge, let's recruit some freshmen this year. At worst, we can just increase our club benefits," Zhao Gaoyang said.
Cheng Huaiyu pondered that what he said made some sense. In the end, the few of them discussed it, bought a white towel from the supermarket downstairs, and pulled that poster of Li Xiaofeng winning the championship out from under the bed to wipe off the dust.
The white towel was supported by two clothes hangers, and the words "Recruitment" were written on it with a marker. The poster had the machine-printed Esports Club logo on it.
In this era, video games were still viewed by parents and teachers as electronic opium, so the Esports Club they had impulsively put together back then wasn't that formal. They couldn't even apply for a school activity room; they only had the recruitment and activity application credit functions permitted by the Student Union.
"Old Xu, let's go, time to recruit."
"You guys go ahead, I have things to do." Xu Heng munched on an apple while selling off some scattered shares, exchanging them for hot stocks that would hit the daily limit in the next two days.
Cheng Huaiyu took a look and laughed, "You play the stock market too?"
Xu Heng nodded and said it was a hobby, just for entertainment, and he hadn't invested much money.
"Then what are you fussing about? Hurry up and come with me, the President, to recruit. Maybe there are pretty little sisters waiting for you!"
Xu Heng thought to himself, how many girls play video games? Let alone pretty little sisters, he was afraid they wouldn't even be able to find a single pretty little brother.
But soon, he put down the apple in his hand. It seemed... there actually was one...
The person Xu Heng thought of was Jiang Mengyuan. This girl was, in every sense, a girl who could play games, was pretty, and was a little sister.
However, in his past life, Jiang Mengyuan joined the Esports Club when they were juniors. Now Jiang Mengyuan was only a freshman, so it was too early to talk about this.
"Old Xu, the brothers can't do without you!" Cheng Huaiyu said earnestly.
"Where does this come from?"
"Don't you know how popular you are among those girls right now? You don't even need to call out when you go there. Just sit down, and a whole bunch of girls will come. A whole bunch, graceful and charming, fragrant, full of the scent of youth."
Xu Heng laughed: "Hearing you say that, I'm actually a little tempted."
"Don't just be tempted, action is better than temptation."
"Fine! I'll accommodate you once."
"Holy crap! Old Xu, you're a real brother. In the future, you can sleep with my wife," Cheng Huaiyu said, moved.
"Get lost!"
Actually, it wasn't that Xu Heng really wanted to experience the feeling of being surrounded by girls; he just simply wanted to see the long legs under the girls' shorts and skirts.
