Chapter 105
105. Chapter 105: Late Reinforcements (Ally Bonus: Wang Mingbai)
Lin Yue stared at Yang Yi’s phone call, her expression turning grim.
“Yang Yi must have sensed something’s off—after Qin Qing warned me just moments ago, and now Yang Yi can’t reach Yang Ye, he’s probably guessed the operation failed and wants to find out what happened from me.” She hesitated, asking Li Yi’s opinion.
“If it’s fortune, you can’t avoid it; if it’s disaster, you can’t escape it. Whether Yang Ye comes to kill me or we kill Yang Ye, this is already a dead end. Yang Yi will never let this go, and we can’t just sit back and wait for the Yang family to come after us again.”
Li Yi glanced at Yang Ye’s corpse and spoke seriously.
“Correct. Yang Ye is dead, and this can’t be hidden forever—we’ll have to face Yang Yi eventually.” Lin Yue nodded, no longer hesitating, and immediately answered the call.
“Lin Yue, it’s me, Yang Yi.” Yang Yi’s voice came through the phone.
Lin Yue said, “Yang Yi, what do you want? We’re not close. Don’t call me for no reason.”
“Lin Yue, stop pretending. I know Qin Qing warned you. I know Yang Ye was sent to kill Li Yi—and just now, Yang Ye went silent. I suspect his mission failed. No matter how things turned out, if Yang Ye’s still alive, spare his life. Name your terms.”
Yang Yi’s voice was low, like a beast holding back its fury.
“You actually think Yang Ye’s mission failed? That guy hired a gang of vagrants to ambush Li Yi—and Li Yi’s just a Spirit Medium cultivator.” Lin Yue sneered, as if disgusted by his naivety.
Yang Yi said, “Nothing’s impossible in this world. Once you eliminate the wrong answers, only one possibility remains. So did you arrive in time to save Li Yi? But whether Li Yi lives or dies doesn’t matter to me. Yang Ye is my uncle—I have to save his life.”
“You want to save your uncle’s life; I want to save Li Yi’s. We’re in the same boat.” Lin Yue’s smile vanished, her tone icy. “Too bad your call came too late. One minute ago, Yang Ye died—I killed him. His body’s right beside me. Want to see it? Should I take a photo for you? Make a nice funeral portrait?”
At these words,
Yang Yi fell silent for over ten seconds on the other end.
But his fury and killing intent flared instantly.
Yet shouting threats over the phone wasn’t Yang Yi’s style. He suppressed his rage and grief, speaking coldly: “So, Lin Yue, you’ve chosen to stand against me, Yang Yi?”
Lin Yue opened her mouth, but Li Yi roared beside her: “Yang Yi, it’s not Lin Yue against you—it’s you, alone, declaring war on the Investigation Bureau! This time, Yang Ye killed Investigator Wang Jian and field operative Chen Hao. Are you so lost in cultivation that your mind’s corrupted? Have you gone mad? You dare kill Investigation Bureau agents? I swear I’ll avenge them. You’d better wait.”
Investigator Wang Jian is dead?
The news instantly dulled Yang Yi’s fury and killing intent. His face changed—he realized the gravity of the situation.
Investigators aren’t untouchable.
But you must handle it carefully.
Yang Ye killed Wang Jian, failed his mission, and left Li Yi alive as a witness. This leaves concrete evidence—the Investigation Bureau will act.
There’s only one way to quell this.
Kill every witness. Then the Investigation Bureau has no proof. Even if they suspect the Yang family, they’ll have to swallow it silently.
But killing every witness is impossible.
Yang Yi is still in the Safe Zone—he can’t fly to the Ruins District.
So this situation has become complicated.
Yang Yi’s mind raced with ideas, but he rejected them all—no matter how he thought, he couldn’t escape the Investigation Bureau’s pursuit.
“Li Yi, we’ve had disagreements before, but nothing that couldn’t be resolved. But after today, there’s no turning back.” Yang Yi replied again, his voice now cold—his uncle was dead.
Who was right or wrong no longer mattered.
“Your Yang family sent killers to my door—and now you want to make peace? Do you think my life is so worthless that I should hand it over like I did when I gave you that fist technique for free in the basement?” Li Yi laughed bitterly with rage. “Don’t be so arrogant. Once you towered over me, unreachable. Now you’re just a slightly stronger bandit. When I’m strong enough, I’ll make you pay in blood.”
Lin Yue added beside him: “Yang Yi, I warned you before—don’t push when you’re on top. Back then, Li Yi and I were weaker than you—we accepted the loss. But from now on, I’m just as determined to see you dead.”
“Understood. Then we’ll settle this by strength—see who survives to the end.” Yang Yi’s tone remained cold, utterly emotionless.
“Well said. Life and death are fate. Let strength decide.” Li Yi replied coldly.
Yang Yi added: “But don’t touch our families. This feud is between the three of us. Don’t drag innocent people in.”
His Yang family was large and powerful—he didn’t want collateral damage, so he made the offer.
“Agreed.”
Lin Yue said immediately: “But if another incident like Yang Ye’s happens, I’ll kill every Yang family member I find.”
She accepted the “no families” clause—she had family too, and Li Yi’s parents were silent. If they got dragged in, it would hurt everyone.
“Don’t worry. I’ll handle you myself. No other Yang will get involved. You’d better watch yourselves—don’t give me an opening.” Yang Yi ended the call immediately.
Lin Yue put down her phone, her expression grim again.
If anyone else had spoken such threats, she wouldn’t have worried. But Yang Yi was different—he was a Spirit Sense cultivator, a major figure in Tianchang City. Being targeted by such an enemy wasn’t something to take lightly.
But Lin Yue didn’t regret her choice.
“Li Yi, we must train hard. We need to reach Spirit Sense as soon as possible—only then can we stand against Yang Yi. Until then, we must play for time. Don’t let him catch us off guard. We must be extra careful. But Yang Yi has limits—he won’t charge in like a brute. You’re an Investigation Bureau field operative, and I have my Master as backing.”
Lin Yue said seriously: “Yang Yi will only strike when he finds the perfect moment. As long as we don’t slip up, we’re safe—for now.”
“I understand.”
Li Yi nodded: “This fight likely pushed me into Spirit Insight. In a few days, once the Training Base’s Strange Artifact training room is ready, I’ll get two permanent slots. Then, Lin Jie, we’ll train together using the artifact—our strength will surge, and we’ll reach Spirit Sense quickly.”
“I heard about the damaged Strange Artifact the Investigation Bureau recovered—I heard it from the Cultivator Association. You contributed heavily to that mission and got a substantial reward.” Lin Yue nodded. “I didn’t expect it to help so fast. Honestly, I’ve never trained with a Strange Artifact before. This time, I’m lucky to ride on your coattails—I’ll have it easy from now on.”
“But that damaged artifact is dangerous—it pulls you into illusions. To train with it, you must first break the illusion. Otherwise, every time you approach, you’ll be deceived and can’t train at all.” Li Yi added quickly: “But don’t worry, Lin Jie—I’ll teach you a small trick later to help you break the illusion faster.”
“You’ve only been cultivating for a short time—how do you know so much? But this isn’t urgent. Right now, your priority is healing. Your body matters most.” Lin Yue turned her concern to Li Yi’s condition.
“I know.”
Li Yi was well aware of his state.
He definitely needed rest.
As they talked,
Several armored vehicles were speeding toward them.
The engine roars snapped Li Yi and Lin Yue to attention.
They tensed—then relaxed.
“It’s the Investigation Bureau.”
Li Yi said, then added regretfully: “Looks like the Investigation Bureau’s here—but too late. If they’d arrived sooner, Wang Jian and Chen Hao wouldn’t have died.”
“Don’t blame yourself. If Yang Ye only wanted to kill you, he wouldn’t have teamed up with vagrants. Those vagrants hate Investigation Bureau agents. Wang Jian was probably targeted too—that’s why they teamed up to ambush you.”
Lin Yue comforted him: “You shouldn’t feel responsible for their deaths. Blame these vicious vagrants—they’re what’s tearing apart order. Without them, where would Yang Ye find assassins? He wouldn’t dare touch an agent himself.”
“Lin Jie, you’re right.”
Li Yi nodded, then looked at the approaching vehicles.
The vehicles stopped.
Investigation Bureau agents immediately poured out.
Some were strangers; others familiar—Zhang Zhixiong, Priest Pete. Even Team Leader Zhang Lei arrived, face dark with anger.
An incident like this—Investigation Bureau agents ambushed and killed in the Ruins District—demanded his presence.
Zhang Lei strode forward, fury contained. He glanced once and understood the situation. His gaze settled on Wang Jian’s corpse, and he fell silent for a moment.
Wang Jian had always been a diligent, excellent agent—always the first to volunteer for missions, even neglecting his own cultivation. That’s why he’d remained stuck at Spirit Medium. And now, such a good agent had been slaughtered in the Ruins District by a gang of vagrants.
He felt guilty—if he’d acted decisively that day and teamed up with Li Shaoqing to kill Wei Bin, those vagrants would’ve been wiped out then, and none of this would’ve happened.
“Sorry, Team Leader. Wang Jian and Chen Hao are dead. I couldn’t save them.” Li Yi said, filled with guilt upon seeing Zhang Lei.
“Li Yi, you did enough. You killed that knife-wielder—you gave it your all. Now rest. I’ll handle the rest. Don’t worry—I, Zhang Lei, will avenge them for you.”
Zhang Lei saw Li Yi, drenched in blood, multiple bones broken. He gently patted his shoulder and handed him a vial.
It was another bottle of Supernatural Water.
Zhang Lei had rushed here hoping to save one or two critically wounded agents with it.
But only Li Yi survived. Wang Jian and Chen Hao were dead. The vial lost its purpose—so he gave it to Li Yi to help him recover faster.
“Engineer Zheng, drive Li Yi back to the Training Base for treatment.” Zhang Lei glanced at Lin Yue: “You’re Li Yi’s friend, right? Please come along and look after him.”
“No problem. It’s my duty.” Lin Yue nodded.
Engineer Zheng hurried over, saw Li Yi’s condition, reached out to help—but stopped, afraid his rough hands might cause further injury.
“He’s badly hurt. I’ll handle it.” Lin Yue said.
“Alright, let’s head back to the Training Base immediately.” Zheng quickly started the vehicle.
After Lin Yue lifted Li Yi into the car, they sped off at maximum speed to get him medical care.
