Chapter 876: Disagreement
Through conversation, Li Yi gained some understanding of the living dead in this world; strictly speaking, these individuals with living dead status possessed no extraordinary powers.
They merely acquired certain traits of the deceased after dying, and otherwise were no different from ordinary people—still fragile, killable by firearms, and incapable of immortality.
The only usefulness they held was that this world required them to communicate with the dead and handle disasters caused by the deceased.
Once he understood, Li Yi lost interest and had no desire to investigate how the dead existed; his time in this world was brief, and all he needed was for these living dead to eliminate that building.
The following evening.
"Mr. Taiyi, the operation against the lockdown zone in Huaimu City begins at ten o'clock. Will you be going to the scene?" Minister Wang Jianming arrived personally at around eight to notify him.
"You're punctual enough. I hope this operation doesn't disappoint me—you've already taken your rewards, and if you fail, I'll be very displeased."
Inside the conference room, Li Yi, seated atop a auspicious cloud, was reviewing various records concerning living dead incidents.
Through official channels, one could most directly and effectively learn the truth about the dead in this world.
He set down the file in his hands and looked at Wang Jianming.
Wang Jianming, as minister, stiffened at once and said: "Rest assured, Mr. Taiyi—this operation deploys highly experienced living dead squads; success is guaranteed. Moreover, Commander Zhao Hongjie has mobilized every available resource to ensure absolute certainty."
He understood this was more than just an operation—it represented a promise to Taiyi and the survival of the entire world.
If that building could not be destroyed,
the warfire from the other world might very well spread here; this world already struggled to cope with the dead, and had no strength to confront a powerhouse like Li Yi.
"Good. Now leave me alone—I'll observe your operation from above this city. If you complete the mission successfully, I'll give you a gift before I leave." Li Yi withdrew his gaze and walked forward.
An auspicious cloud sprouted beneath his feet; he ignored the wall ahead and passed straight through it, moments later soaring into the sky above.
He can pass through walls too?
Wang Jianming's eyes widened in shock.
Such incomprehensible supernatural power—no matter how many times he witnessed it, it shattered one's worldview. Li Yi's endless abilities left no doubt: if he grew angry, destroying this world would be effortless.
After all, a single large-scale natural disaster could shatter the balance between the living and the dead, erasing everything here.
"All departments, prepare. Taiyi has left the building and is now above Huaimu City. Everyone, execute the plan as ordered. Remember: under any circumstance, fulfill every request of Mr. Taiyi without hesitation."
"Also, this operation is not merely a war between the living and the dead—it determines the fate of the entire world. May all the living remain safe."
Wang Jianming pulled out a radio and spoke a few brief, solemn words.
Meanwhile,
Li Yi, standing atop an auspicious cloud, had returned to the previously sealed zone.
This time, due to his presence, far more personnel participated; even outside the lockdown zone, he saw numerous armed personnel blocking roads.
Armed helicopters filled the sky.
Though this world's technology had only advanced to around the 1990s, all necessary weapons and equipment were present.
Inside the lockdown zone,
many living dead had begun preparing for the operation. Some Li Yi had seen before—the woman named Han Chuan, the man with half his body charred, and a young man dressed like a corpse's funeral shroud. Though their ages varied,
their emergency mobilization by the state for this mission meant they were no ordinary individuals.
"According to this world's rules, at ten p. ., the living sleep and the dead awaken. I wonder how they'll use their living dead status to eliminate those three invisible ghosts."
Li Yi thought to himself, then glanced behind him.
The dead corpse clinging to his back was still there.
And after surviving the first day, by the second night, it had grown heavier—its weight could easily crush a living person, but for Li Yi, it remained within tolerable limits.
As time slowly passed,
the living dead within the lockdown zone began moving.
They did not deploy everyone, but selected ten to form a temporary squad; if they failed, a second squad, then a third, would take over. Clearly, in dealing with the dead, numbers were not better than precision.
"Everyone, I'm Zhang Yan, the team leader responsible for this region."
A middle-aged man stepped forward and spoke bluntly: "Inside the building ahead, we've confirmed three dead: a man, a woman, and a girl—apparently a family of three."
"But these three deceased are not ordinary."
Before Zhang Yan finished, he was interrupted.
"No need to elaborate. I know the danger of this family. The entire building has become a spirit dwelling—such corpses are rare. If Huaimu City's living dead could handle this, they wouldn't have sealed off the area."
"And this mission is unusually critical. From the personnel deployment, it's clear this is a mission that must succeed—meaning all of us living dead can die, but we must destroy those three corpses and dismantle this spirit dwelling, correct?"
A man radiating putrid stench stared at Zhang Yan with a blank gaze.
Zhang Yan paused, then nodded: "Yes, Jiang Yan. This mission must succeed."
"Because of that man?" Another living dead pointed upward.
But instantly, Han Chuan slapped his hand down, her gray-white eyes warning: "Don't point. Do your job. That one—no, that being—cannot even be called human. He possesses power to destroy the world of the living."
"True. A being who can sever a hundred-kilometer river with a single finger isn't human—calling him a god wouldn't be excessive. So we're all monkeys, performing a war between living and dead for his amusement?" The man chuckled at Han Chuan.
Han Chuan coldly replied: "You're wrong. This isn't entertainment—it's saving our world. If you know that being above possesses such power, you wouldn't want to see such entities fighting and slaughtering in our world, would you?"
"This building accidentally connected to another world. He used it to enter ours. If we don't destroy it, countless others like him will appear."
"So that's how it is." Their expressions grew grim.
They had been hastily mobilized and knew little of the details—only fragments. Doubts naturally arose.
"If the building is destroyed and the one above doesn't leave, but stays in our world forever—what then? Why not make him leave first, then act?" Jiang Yan suddenly said gravely.
Han Chuan frowned.
She hadn't thought that far—she merely followed orders and did her duty. After all, negotiations with Taiyi were handled by the higher-ups; the terms reached were beyond her knowledge.
But Jiang Yan's words stirred unsettling thoughts among them.
If the mission succeeded and the building fell, wouldn't Taiyi remain in this world indefinitely—with no one from the other world able to subdue him?
If so, the entire future of this world would become his plaything.
"I think we must communicate this to the higher-ups. The operation must be delayed." Han Chuan immediately turned to Zhang Yan, earnestly.
Zhang Yan's expression darkened with hesitation. "Any issues? Finish the mission first."
"After the mission, it'll be too late," Jiang Yan said gravely. "This opportunity is unique—it concerns the fate of the world. Can we treat it so casually? If this issue isn't resolved, I refuse to act."
"I agree," someone immediately echoed.
Han Chuan frowned deeply, lost in thought.
Zhang Yan's face darkened—he hadn't expected such dissent just before the operation.
"Understand this: what happens if you refuse? I repeat—finish the mission first. Don't dwell on other matters. His existence will be handled by those above."
"If Mr. Taiyi decides to stay permanently in our world, that's the true catastrophe. Haven't you wondered—what if he's immortal?" Jiang Yan said. "I don't fear death. I'm merely trying my hardest to correct the errors you're making."
"This world is too small to contain a god."
Zhang Yan fell silent.
He had to admit: Jiang Yan was right. If the building was destroyed, severing the link to the other world, Taiyi might well refuse to leave.
With his power, the entire world would become his toy.
No one could bear the risk of such a world's collapse.
After all, this opportunity comes but once—choose wrong, and doom is eternal.
