Chapter 167: Not Really Sisters
Downstairs.
Mo Song asked Leng Yueyou beside him: "You and your younger sister..."
Leng Yueyou paused, a hint of wistfulness flickered in her eyes, and she spoke lightly: "We are twins, born from our mother's womb on the same day, but we have never been close since childhood."
Mo Song's steps hesitated slightly, looking at her cold, hard profile, he recalled the occasional scenes he had bumped into at the Leng Family residence, and didn't dare ask further.
Leng Yueyou, however, seemed to have opened her chatterbox, as if talking to herself: "She is the daughter Daddy holds dearest; since junior two she's been abroad receiving the best treatment, seeing the best doctors, and Dad would rather drop everything at the company and go abroad to accompany her. And I..."
She paused, the corner of her mouth curling into a self-mocking arc: "Just the nominal eldest daughter of the Leng Family, without even the qualification to stay by his side."
She moved out of the Leng Family; her father had never retained her, but she didn't need him—having her mother was enough.
Mo Song had once witnessed her insisting on moving out of the Leng Family; when she was packing her luggage earlier, her father merely asked lightly, "Have you decided?"
There was no attempt to stop her, no reluctance, and not even a question about where she was moving to.
Mo Song comforted: "It's fine, you're also excellent now, your younger sister..."
"We can't really be considered sisters anymore."
She lifted her gaze, the wistfulness in her eyes fading a little, replaced by indifference: "She had just started junior two when she was taken abroad; we have no means of contact, and though we're called twins, we're practically strangers."
We were never close to begin with.
Actually, she had hoped for it before.
After her mother remarried, it seemed she had no true blood relatives left in this world.
Countless late nights, she gazed at the photo in the album of the two of them as children wearing matching dresses.
In the photo, Leng Anzhi had her hair in little braids, timidly keeping a distance from her, while their father held Leng Anzhi's hand.
Back then she always thought that when her sister returned, they could become truly close, able to share their hearts and rely on each other like other twin sisters.
But when she really came back, she discovered they had changed a lot; she had always been aloof, no longer the little girl who longed for her father's attention.
Nowadays Leng Anzhi wears the latest designer dress, her eyes carry an innate indifference, her speech carries a faint overseas accent, and every gesture exudes an air of nonchalance.
And the little girl who once kept her emotions bottled up and didn't dare raise her voice has long since vanished.
Leng Anzhi, who has been abroad for less than three years now, wears all her emotions on her face; for people and things she dislikes, she shows a blatant indifference, and that frank coldness makes Leng Yueyou not even want to glance at her.
Between them lies an unbridgeable distance.
She paused, didn't go on, and only the light in her eyes dimmed a bit.
"Actually… she doesn't seem malicious…" Mo Song hesitated before speaking, "She was quite calm toward you just now."
"Calm?" Leng Yueyou lightly shook her head, gazing toward the distant teaching building, her tone complex: "That's because she doesn't care; to her, I, this nominal sister, might be less important than a stranger."
"So then her coming back this time…" Mo Song hesitated before speaking.
"Who knows." Leng Yueyou withdrew her gaze, the wistfulness in her eyes covered by a layer of coolness: "Maybe she's tired of life abroad, maybe Dad wants her back to handle some family affairs, or maybe… she's just come back to take a look."
She gave a light scoff: "Although Father still has a son, that is my brother, but he idles all day and Father hardly manages him, so naturally he wouldn't entrust the family business to a helpless good-for-nothing."
Mo Song didn't know what to say, "Maybe…"
Leng Yueyou didn't let her finish, shaking her head: "No matter which, it has nothing to do with me."
Leng Yueyou looked at Mo Song's profile, took a deep breath, her tone resentful: "No speaking up for her, desk mate—whose side are you really on?"
Mo Song hastily waved his hands: "Of course I'm on your side!"
"Let's go."
Mu Youyu had just stepped off the office stairs when Leng Anzhi lightly took hold of her arm.
The girl's fingertips were slightly cool, yet the motion was natural, as if she had relied on her like this for a long time.
Jiang Liangjin paused, then silently stepped closer to Mu Youyu.
"The paperwork was processed really quickly."
Mu Youyu turned her head to look at her, a gentle smile in her eyes: "Once I finish the entrance exam next week, I can officially start attending classes; then I'll show you around!"
Leng Anzhi's eyes lit up, her nod carrying a hint of excitement, in stark contrast to her indifference toward Leng Yueyou: "Sure, I'll follow your lead."
Yu Ci beside them chuckled and interjected: "By then we could still be in the same class; our class atmosphere is pretty good."
Jiang Liangjin and Gu Xingnan had nothing to say.
Leng Anzhi looked at him and drawled: "I don't want to be in the same class as Leng Yueyou; when the teacher asked just now, I applied to transfer to Class 1."
Mu Youyu followed her line: "Class 1 is also fine, as long as you're happy."
Jiang Liangjin knew Mu Youyu was always soft-hearted toward friends, couldn't bear to see them lonely; surely she was doing this because she feared Leng Anzhi might struggle to adapt after just transferring.
Yu Ci curiously looked at Leng Anzhi and pressed: "Anzhi, what's going on between you and Leng Yueyou?"
Leng Anzhi released her grip on Mu Youyu's arm, waved her hand, and said briefly: "Twins, we don't know each other."
She lowered her eyelids, her long lashes casting a small shadow beneath them, her tone indifferent as if speaking about someone else.
Gu Xingnan stood behind, calm; Leng Anzhi had already told him this before.
Jiang Liangjin cared about nothing except Mu Youyu's affairs.
Mu Youyu had suspected before, but this was the first time she heard Leng Anzhi say it herself.
Yu Ci didn't understand: "You don't know each other?"
Twins can really be unfamiliar with each other!
Leng Anzhi chuckled: "Yeah, aside from the household registration, we're just like strangers."
As a child she was also slow to warm up, plus one mother liked her, one father liked her.
Later the two divorced, and then there was even less to say.
Mu Youyu comforted: "It's fine; from now on at school, I'll be with you."
"Okay!"
