Chapter 445: The Two Most Mysterious People of This Generation

~6 min read 1,108 words

Seeing Mu Xin and Jun Chenling chatting happily, Mu Youyu also didn't go over to disturb them.

She took Jiang Liangjin's hand, weaving through a few groups of guests exchanging pleasantries, and walked toward the seats beside the main table.

Yu Ci and Gu Xingnan sat in the middle seats, with two flat drinks and two half-eaten cakes in front of them, looking as if they had been sitting there for a long time.

The person on the left kept poking the cake listlessly with a fork, while the teenager beside him sat upright, neither hurried nor anxious.

"Why don't you two go for a walk?" Mu Youyu said, sitting down opposite them and casually pulling Jiang Liangjin down as well.

Yu Ci lifted his eyes, looking utterly bored, "You think I want to? I just came to find you, and an uncle grabbed me and questioned me for fifteen minutes about what's going on with that project at my dad's company lately—I don't even manage the company, how would I know?"

Gu Xingnan echoed, "Right, Uncle Yu went to socialize."

Jiang Liangjin curled her lip and said, "Aren't you the heir of the Yu family?"

Yu Ci stopped talking, sat up straight, "Yeah, I'm going to start working hard from now on!"

This can't go on like this.

Mu Youyu was both laughing and crying.

Gu Xingnan added, "It's fine, Uncle Yu isn't getting old that quickly."

"Right, then I can stay lazy for a few more decades." Yu Ci resumed complaining about being pulled aside by the elders just now.

Mu Youyu listened helplessly, occasionally responding, while her gaze slowly swept the banquet hall looking for her family.

All she saw were the two most mysterious members of the Mu family's generation, standing by the wall.

Mu Yichen held a cup of water he had barely sipped, turning his head to listen to an elderly man beside him, expression focused, occasionally nodding, lips moving slightly as he replied a few sentences, his voice drowned out by the surrounding noise.

Mu Yichi stood half a step behind his brother's side, eyes shifting, appearing to look elsewhere while actually taking in everything around him.

That position was chosen cleverly—it allowed them to notice anyone approaching immediately, without making those being watched feel uncomfortable.

Mu Youyu glanced for a few seconds, then, afraid of being noticed by outsiders, she withdrew her gaze.

These two brothers have rather special jobs; she never asked exactly what they do, only knowing they are seldom home, and when they do return they rush off after just a couple of days, sometimes not even gathering for New Year.

One could say even their own parents, pleading with grandparents, couldn't get them to come.

Only when this sister Mu Youyu or Mu Xin speaks up will they grant face and come back for a visit.

Family members also never bring up their work proactively, only casually asking at the dinner table, "When are you leaving?" and then saying no more after getting an answer.

Mu Youyu vaguely recalls that after the two were accepted into B Da's youth program at fourteen, they truly began to get busy, coming home less and less each year.

Every time they video chat, it's either from a lab or an undisclosed location, sometimes in the dark, making their faces impossible to see.

When she was about ten, she asked once; Mu Yichi rubbed her head with a grin and said, "Brother is working for the country," while Mu Yichen added lightly on the side, "Earning money for Baby to buy candy."

She was already sensible back then, so she didn't press further; later she pieced together some outlines from the occasional fragments the elders let slip.

Jiang Liangjin followed her gaze and saw Mu Yichen and Mu Yichi standing together, he raised an eyebrow, himself not really knowing what the two do.

Yu Ci finally finished complaining, not noticing that aside from Gu Xingnan, no one was listening.

He lifted his cup and downed the remaining drink in one gulp, then let out a breath, "Youbao, your parents are here—why don't you go keep them company?"

"They'll find something to do themselves."

Mu Youyu shook her head.

Jiang Liangjin glanced toward the main table, where Mu's father was talking with Jiang Su, occasionally nudging him.

Mu's mother sat beside Grandma Song, with Shen Ningmu on her other side, the three close together.

Mu's mother tilted her head to listen to Grandma Song, occasionally leaning on her shoulder, her demeanor so gentle it didn't seem like that of a mother of four.

Yu Ci clicked his tongue twice, "Your parents' relationship is really good, they travel everywhere and hardly manage you."

"They do," Mu Youyu mused, "They just don't care what we do, but sometimes they still ask if something comes up."

A flicker of gloom passed through Yu Ci's eyes, then he said casually, "That's pretty good."

Gu Xingnan stood up and patted his shoulder; Yu Ci tilted his head to look at him, feeling a bit comforted.

Jiang Liangjin gave him a sideways glance and comforted him with action, "On your birthday, I'll give you that sports car you've been eyeing."

"Deal!" Yu Ci revived with full vigor, raising his empty cup as if toasting, "Thanks in advance, President Jiang—President Jiang is so imposing!"

Mu Youyu helplessly gathered her thoughts, noticing Mu Yichen and Mu Yichi still talking with that old man, then, not knowing what happened, all three headed together toward the backstage.

Yu Ci set down his empty cup, turned to Jiang Liangjin, "By the way, when did you say you'd send it?"

"Your birthday."

"There are still several months," Yu Ci calculated in his head, "How about sending it early? As a celebration of my successful transfer."

"What does your successful transfer have to do with me?"

"To celebrate our lasting friendship!"

"." Jiang Liangjin couldn't be bothered to respond; Yu Ci cared, turned to Mu Youyu, and complained, "Youbao, judge this."

Mu Youyu was pulled back from her daydream, blinked, and said, "What?"

Seeing her expression, Yu Ci knew she hadn't been listening at all, sighed, "Forget it, forget it."

Gu Xingnan let out a low chuckle beside him; Yu Ci glared, and he settled down.

Mu Youyu's light eyes wandered aimlessly across the banquet hall, then suddenly stopped in a direction not far away.

Lin Ning was walking toward her, wearing a light pink dress, hair tied in buns, a smile on her face.

Beside her followed another person, half a step behind.

Mu Youyu saw the person coming, and her expression froze.
