Chapter 130: The Sun of the Empire
Everyone in the Imperial Court had recently made a discovery—
Their Sun was in a very good mood.
Over the next few days, although Laiboli was repeatedly given the cold shoulder, he stood outside the door and coaxed her with a very good temper each time. When he couldn't coax her, he didn't get annoyed or lose his temper like he used to; instead, he wandered off to see the six little deer.
He didn't really remember who was who, as the patterns on the fawns were all different. At that moment, they were blinking their large, black-grape-like eyes at Laiboli, which inexplicably softened his heart.
One was very easy to distinguish because its appearance was different from the other fawns; it was a reindeer. It had a little black nose, brown fur, small ears, and a small body, looking quite clever.
Laiboli picked it up from the stroller and placed it on the ground. The little deer trotted along on its four small hooves, walking very steadily.
He nodded with satisfaction and said to the servant, "Give them more physical training in the future. The three little females don't need to participate, but keep a close eye on this one and report any situation to me immediately."
The servant respectfully accepted the order.
Laiboli asked again, "Does Sui Sui come often?"
The servant dared not lie and said, "Miss Qiao does not come often, but..."
"Speak your mind."
"Yes. Miss Qiao does often go to see the lion cubs."
Laiboli's eyelids twitched.
He didn't say anything, his expression unreadable, but before leaving, he instructed, "Keep the nine snake eggs further away in the future. Don't mention them in front of her."
The servant agreed.
However, fate did not follow his wishes, as all nine snake eggs developed cracks on this very day.
First, one little snake broke its shell, and immediately after, the second and third ones also seemed to have telepathy, struggling to crawl out of their eggs.
The incubator suddenly became crowded. Three little snakes, as thick as index fingers, began to circle and swim, flicking their tiny tongues. By the time all nine eggs had hatched, the servant had already moved each little snake into a larger incubator.
Among them was a pure white little snake with a pair of red eyes that were extremely cute. But before the little white snake could adapt to the world, it was pinned down by a silver two-headed snake.
The silver two-headed snake was twice as thick and long as its brothers and sisters. Even at an age without teeth, it opened its mouth wide, flicking its tongue and hissing at the other little snakes.
When Qiao Suisui received the news, she was playing with the lion cubs. Hearing that the snake eggs had hatched, she went to take a look out of curiosity about the two-headed snake. This one look made her scalp tingle.
The incubator was densely packed with snakes, winding and piled together. Although they were still very small and their patterns were beautiful, Qiao Suisui's fear of cold-blooded animals made her never dare to look a second time.
She didn't even see who was who, nor did she see any two-headed king cobra, and she turned and walked away with small steps.
Behind her, several little snakes sensed their mother's approach and scrambled to crowd into the box. The two-headed king cobra kept bumping its head against the glass, trying to "break out of prison" to find its mother.
Soon, someone reported Qiao Suisui's reaction to Laiboli. The man, who was signing documents, frowned and said sternly, "Who told you to act on your own and tell her?"
The subordinate immediately lowered his head nervously, wiping away sweat. He thought to himself, even if you don't like the children of the other two, you can't stop a biological mother from seeing her own children.
Everyone thought the Sun disliked the children of Miss Qiao's other two "spouses," but that was not the case.
Laiboli knew how much she feared snakes.
When she first returned from Sote, Qiao Suisui often had nightmares. Sometimes she said she was swallowed by a python, and sometimes she dreamed she had fallen into a snake pit.
He accompanied her and coaxed her for nearly half a month before she slowly improved and stopped having nightmares.
Back at the palace, Qiao Suisui clutched her chest, her pores trembling all over at the mere thought of that scene.
She had wanted to give the photos of the snake cubs to Zongfang, but she had run away in a panic and hadn't taken any. Now, she wasn't willing to go back to take them, so she ordered people to take ID photos of each snake cub and label them with serial numbers.
It was nearly evening when she got the photos. For some reason, Luka had been leaving early and returning late these past few days, so she had to use her light brain to call Ka'er.
The other end of the audio call answered almost instantly, but after Qiao Suisui greeted him, there was silence. Just as she was about to pick up the light brain to check if there was a problem, she heard the man's first words: "Who are you? You're not Qiao Suisui, are you? Give the light brain back to her quickly."
"If you don't speak properly, I'm hanging up."
"Don't, don't!" Ka'er said with a laugh, "You never take the initiative to contact me. I just couldn't believe it for a moment."
Now it was Qiao Suisui's turn to be caught off guard, and she said a bit embarrassedly, "I have something I need your help with."
"Ha."
He fucking knew it; this woman never thought of him unless she needed something.
"Say it, since I owe you," he said, his teeth itching with anger.
Qiao Suisui coughed and said, "I want... to ask you to help me send something to the Southern Battlefield."
"..."
Hearing the words "Southern Battlefield," Ka'er knew who she was referring to, and his mood became complex, sour, and bitter.
He suppressed his anger and asked, "What is it?"
"Photos."
Send, send, send—do you really have to send a few lousy photos? I'll send him a missile instead.
That's what Ka'er thought, but he didn't say it out loud.
He used a joke to express his true feelings: "Sure, besides being your private flying ship, I've now become your messenger. When you're happy, let me be your man."
Hearing this, Qiao Suisui's heart skipped a beat. Listening to his tone, she clearly felt Ka'er's unhappiness. After thinking for a moment, she explained, "I don't know any other way. The Southern Battlefield has signal shielding. I heard that people there can only contact the outside world through encrypted communication bands. I... I really don't know who else to ask for help."
Ka'er was silent for a few seconds, then changed from his usual uninhibited self, his tone full of sincerity: "Sweetheart, you don't need to explain to me. I'm very happy that you're willing to trouble me. Really happy."
Qiao Suisui was unable to handle Ka'er being so serious all of a sudden and stood there stunned, not knowing what to say.
There was only the sound of their breathing on the other end of the audio. After a long while, Ka'er said gently, "Close your eyes."
Qiao Suisui didn't understand, but she obediently did as told.
She slowly closed her eyes. She couldn't remember how much time passed—it seemed like a few heartbeats, or perhaps as long as an hour of stillness—when Ka'er's voice sounded in her ears again, but this time it was inside the palace—
"Alright, open them now."
She opened her eyes to see a man with red short hair, wearing a black special forces uniform, standing two steps in front of her.
"Ka'er!"
Qiao Suisui exclaimed in a low voice, watching as Ka'er smiled and walked straight toward her.
"I've come to collect some labor dispatch fees."
"What labor..."
Before she could finish her question, Ka'er leaned over and kissed her.
He embraced her, his gun still held in front of him, the cold metallic texture touching her soft arms.
It was a hard, cold embrace.
Yet it was the most romantic kiss that made her melt instantly.
