Chapter 136. Demon Hunter

[Detected a new class. After meeting the relevant conditions, a new class can be formed.

Class: Demon Hunter

Description: A class that specializes in hunting magical creatures and possesses professional skills for dealing with them.

Conditions to Unlock: Complete the hunt of a first-tier magical creature at least once. The method is unrestricted, but the individual must have contributed at least half of the effort during the hunt.

Register with the Adventurers’ Guild and have more than three hunting records.]

Fulan raised an eyebrow. She had not expected that simply looking through information on magical creatures would reveal information about a class.

As expected, there really were more opportunities out in the world. Back in the City of Apprentices, she had nearly worn out the books from flipping through them, yet still failed to find any information on other classes.

However, this class seemed somewhat different from the ones she had had before.

Her previous classes had all required the possession of a certain skill, or for a certain skill to reach a specific level of proficiency.

But this Demon Hunter class required the completion of a particular task, without demanding any related technique.

In theory, even someone who knew no combat techniques or spells at all seemed capable of meeting the conditions for this class.

There was even a baffling requirement to register with the Adventurers’ Guild. It was impossible to make heads or tails of it. What did that have to do with being a Demon Hunter?

That made Fulan somewhat doubtful whether this class could really count as a one-star class.

Still, having it was enough. None of these conditions were particularly hard for Fulan to fulfill. They would simply take a bit of time.

“Honored Mage, this earth drake was first sighted by our guild two years ago. Because it is so powerful, none of the subjugation teams have succeeded. If you need materials from it, you can increase the bounty, and we will arrange a joint hunt with multiple teams...”

The new receptionist assumed that Fulan had taken an interest in the earth drake’s materials, so she began introducing the guild’s commission services to her.

If Fulan was willing to add more money, the receptionist would also receive a small commission.

But Fulan’s next words left her somewhat stunned.

“No, I want to register as an adventurer. Make the arrangements for me. I also want information on this earth drake and these other magical creatures...”

After hearing Fulan’s requirements in full detail, the expression on the receptionist’s face became wonderfully complicated, but she still maintained her professional composure and helped Fulan complete the registration procedures.

Ordinarily, anyone who wanted to register as an adventurer needed a joint recommendation from veteran adventurers. Someone coming alone could not enter this high-end and “profitable” profession by themselves.

But holding a formal rank was a different matter. No matter what, it still put one above a group of apprentices.

Moreover, ninety-five percent of the Adventurers’ Guild’s work actually involved magical creatures of the first tier or below.

There were very few higher-tier missions. By the time it came to second- or third-tier creatures, even teams that had second- or third-tier professionals would not lightly attempt to subjugate them.

That was because casualties were far too easy to incur in such battles. Those magical creatures all possessed wide-area attack abilities, and low-tier professionals found it difficult to survive against them.

High-tier teams generally set their sights on rare first-tier magical creatures instead, relying specifically on those rare materials for payment.

That was safer, and the rewards were not low either, so why bother challenging powerful magical creatures?

Quite a few mages had registered as adventurers before as well, but almost all of them quickly gave up on the profession.

That was because the gains from hunting magical creatures might be useful to lords and warriors, but to mages, they had very little value.

A mage’s combat power was influenced most heavily by spells, and hunting magical creatures was generally unable to provide much direct benefit to spells. Even when it did, the effect was only indirect.

“Honored Mage, if you want information on these magical creatures, you will need to pay an information fee.”

This was also one of the Adventurers’ Guild’s special paid services. If you wanted information on a particular magical creature, then you had to pay for it.

Once the money was paid, the guild would temporarily remove that creature’s listing to prevent other teams from targeting the same prey and causing a conflict.

In addition, the guild would provide sighting reports on the target, its current approximate location, and records of past subjugations of similar magical creatures.

All of that was included in the service covered by the information fee.

Without even lifting her eyes, Fulan placed several gold coins on the table.

The receptionist did not immediately take them. Instead, she confirmed it once more.

“Honored Mage, are you certain you want to take the earth drake mission? If you do not have a team, it may be very difficult to succeed...”

The receptionist looked troubled. Logically speaking, there was nothing wrong on paper with a first-tier professional taking on the subjugation of a first-tier magical creature.

This was not a matter of combat strength, but of experience. To subjugate a magical creature, a great deal of preparation was required.

For example, luring the target into a trap, or cutting off its escape routes... very often, being able to defeat the target in a fight did not mean you could successfully subjugate it.

After all, the target could flee at any time. The moment it realized it could not win, it would run at once.

Even in the case of this earth drake mission, there had been two attempts where the target managed to break through the barriers meant to intercept it, which was why the subjugation failed.

“I’m sure. That’s exactly what I want.”

Seeing that Fulan was set on it, the receptionist could not very well say anything more. She completed the paperwork for her, returned the change, and then continued,

“Honored Mage, please note that the guild will take down any magical creature for which an information fee has been paid for one month. If you wish to extend that period, please bring this voucher to the guild during the final seven days...”

After that, the receptionist explained a number of precautions to Fulan, including how to confirm that the target had truly been killed after a successful hunt, how materials should be transported, and so on...

“Honored Mage, I found the information you wanted on that enchanter’s shop. It’s right here.”

The front-desk clerk who had run downstairs earlier hurried back to Fulan’s side, panting heavily, her face flushed red.

She handed over several sheets of paper, crumpled slightly from the intensity of her sprint.

Fulan gave them a brief glance and said,

“Then I’ll be leaving first.”

“Take care!” the front-desk clerk called out enthusiastically. After all, she had earned a full eighty silver coins today, and even after splitting twenty silver coins with her coworkers, she had still made a handsome amount.

---

Half an hour after Fulan left, a weather-beaten team arrived at the Adventurers’ Guild.

The moment they stepped through the door, the team leader, Oliver, shouted at the top of his lungs,

“Hey, miss! I’m going after that earth drake again this time, so hurry up and bring me the information.”

The front desk was very familiar with this team. They had two first-tier professionals, along with more than six records of first-tier magical creature subjugations. They were a powerful group.

They had previously accepted the earth drake subjugation mission once before, but that time they spent more than a month chasing it through the mountain range without catching up to it, and the attempt ended in failure.

Presumably, they had come prepared this time.

“Uh... sorry, Oliver. That mission was taken not long ago, so I can’t give you the related information.”

When Oliver heard that answer, his brows knit tightly together, and he cursed,

“Damn it, didn’t I already tell those teams that I was dead set on that earth drake? How is someone still trying to snatch it from us?”

He knew just about all the nearby teams capable of hunting first-tier magical creatures, and he had already warned them all beforehand. Yet someone had still beaten him to it. The thought filled him with fury.

A moment later, ignoring the front desk’s explanation entirely, he pushed the door open and strode outside, shouting loudly,

“So what if I don’t have the information? It’ll just take longer to find it. I’d like to see whether whoever wants to oppose me can run faster than I can.”
