Knull went on a killing spree across the universe with the All-Black sword, but was eventually defeated in a battle and fell on a desolate, nameless planet, while the All-Black sword was obtained by an indigenous inhabitant, who later became Gorr the God Butcher.

Years later, Knull awakened. He realized that Gorr was inadvertently following his path, so he did not take back the All-Black sword.

After recovering from his wounds, Knull discovered that he could create amorphous living darkness. He combined his living darkness with the animals on the planet to create one symbiotic species after another, and thus the symbiotes were born.
