Chapter 117: The Wolf Clan That Eats Snakes, Rats, Insects, and Ants
Her first reaction was whether Ying would get hurt; from the Wolf Tribe's words, it seemed Ying and the Wolf Tribe were not enemies.
But a Blood Sacrifice—could it be... the tall woman didn't want to deal with her, glanced at the short woman, and said, "Lei, take care of her; I'm going to work first."
The woman called Lei quickly nodded, waited for the tall woman to leave, then managed a faint smile toward Nan Qinghuan, "You must be hungry; I'll get you some food."
Soon, Lei returned, holding a Banana Leaf, and carefully walked to her side, placed the Banana Leaf on the Stone Bed and gently opened it.
"You, have something to eat."
When Nan Qinghuan saw what was inside, she almost rolled off the bed, "Insect?"
Oh my god, can this be eaten? It was a plump, white insect, its whole body translucent and gently wriggling—beyond disgusting. Nan Qinghuan was speechless. What kind of place is this? Eating insects? The insect was transparent, as long as a roundworm but not as plump. Even though she was used to these disgusting things—she had seen the tribe eat bark and grass roots—eating an insect truly shattered her worldview.
Lei saw Nan Qinghuan so scared and was a bit confused, "What are you afraid of? This is food, it's delicious; if you don't eat, you'll starve."
"I won't eat it; take it away. What kind of place is this?"
Lei, seeing that she wouldn't eat, got quite angry, then rewrapped the insect as if to give it to someone else. Nan Qinghuan almost vomited. What on earth does the Wolf Tribe eat? "If you don't eat, you'll starve; don't you know what this place is?"
Nan Qinghuan was about to ask if it was the Wolf Tribe when a man's footsteps sounded from outside, "Qinghuan…"
Outside the Cave, Ying's tall figure walked in. Seeing Ying return, she immediately ran forward and hugged him, "Where did you go? Why are you only now here?"
Ying was startled, then gave a bright laugh and pulled her into his arms; his expression was extremely indulgent. He reached out to gently stroke her long hair, as if soothing her emotions.
"Don't be afraid, I'm back, aren't I? What's wrong?"
"They here eat insects, how disgusting."
Ying naturally knew what the Wolf Tribe ate. He lifted Nan Qinghuan back onto the Stone Bed, then looked at the standing woman and said, "Lei, go bring in the rabbit I killed."
Lei was somewhat afraid of Ying, but still timidly fetched the rabbit back. The rabbit was clearly killed by a stone; its gray fur was stained red with blood.
"Ying…"
"Go out."
Besides Nan Qinghuan, Ying showed no friendly expression to the other Tribe women. Lei, after glancing timidly at Ying, quickly stepped back. Ying saw Nan Qinghuan still clinging to him; he grew impulsive, but, considering the situation here, he held back.
Go back and make love with her.
"You wait a moment, I'll go roast meat."
Nan Qinghuan saw him deftly handling the rabbit; she also got up and stood beside him, noticing his arm was wrapped in a Beast Skin, and it seemed there was blood inside.
"What's wrong with your hand?"
She grabbed Ying's wrist to see what was happening, but Ying pushed her away; it seemed that was a secret he couldn't be touched.
"Nothing, you're hungry, right? Once I roast the meat, you can eat."
Seeing that he wouldn't show her, it was boring; although she wanted to ask, she also knew that if this man didn't speak, she couldn't get answers. She had too many questions.
So she squatted beside him, watching him deftly tend the rabbit, seeming to know what she wanted to ask. Ying muttered hurriedly, "This is the Wolf Tribe; most of the people here are Half-beasts, very few are humans."
"Half-beast?"
She inhaled a cold breath, recalling the eyes of those two women earlier; weren't those wolf eyes, glowing green?
Ying knew she was scared, yet nodded and explained, "Half-beasts live beyond the rainforest; they survive by eating Plantain leaves and snakes, insects, rats, and plagues."
"Eat those things, but not humans?"
"Humans?" Ying shook his head, "It's probably a rumor; I've never seen them."
Another rumor—must say, rumors really kill people. Only now did she realize that the woman called Lei had made her eat insects; compared to eating snakes and ants, it wasn't so bad.
Nan Qinghuan clenched her fist, recalling the weapons she had found that were used to beat people, which had corn kernels on them; a man's head bore smallpox. So there must be corn cultivation here. The Tribe people really waste resources; such good corn not eaten, but they eat snakes, insects, rats, ants? She was about to ask something, when Ying suddenly stopped his actions, lifted his gaze to her, and asked, "Did the Rongdi help you when the Wolf Tribe attacked you last night?"
Hearing this, she felt a bit awkward, but still nodded, "He helped us kill those Wolf Tribe members."
Upon hearing that, a strange look flashed in Ying's eyes, but he lowered his voice and said, "When Yao asks you later, say it was the Rongdi who killed them; you don't even know the Rongdi, understand?"
"Don't know the Rongdi?"
Nan Qinghuan instantly understood his meaning; indeed, the man called Yao wouldn't easily let those who killed his people go; his leaving didn't mean he wouldn't investigate.
Ying nodded, "Just say you don't know him; once I finish my business, I'll take you away from here."
As he spoke, the rabbit had already been completely skinned; Ying didn't have the habit of cleaning, and since Nan Qinghuan saw that insect, she was no longer picky.
Now that there's rabbit meat, it should be cooked high.
Ying had an excellent memory; after seeing the roast, he could recall how to do it. Soon, the sizzling, oily scent of roasted rabbit meat filled the air, making Nan Qinghuan's stomach rumble; seeing that rabbit meat, she almost wanted to.
She hadn't eaten much last night; now she felt she could eat a whole cow.
"Qinghuan, come try it."
Ying tugged off a rabbit leg and handed it to her; Nan Qinghuan reached out to take it, intending to tear off a piece of meat and shove it into her mouth, when a mocking woman's voice came from outside.
"So you didn't stay at your father's place to eat, you hurried back just to find food for this female?"
As soon as those words were spoken, the couple looked toward the Cave entrance and saw... a woman carrying a round winnowing basket walking slowly toward them. She wore a Beast Skin, her hair tied with a vine, and a wildflower was tucked in her hair, giving her a very wild appearance.
Ying, however, ignored her as if she didn't exist, but patiently looked at Nan Qinghuan, "Eat, and when you're full I'll take you out for a walk."
Nan Qinghuan also drooped her head, saying nothing, focusing on eating; her intuition told her the woman meant no good.
Sure enough... she hadn't finished her rabbit leg when the woman, seeing they ignored her, quickly grew angry; she suddenly hurled the winnowing basket she held at Nan Qinghuan.
With a bang, the basket flew toward Nan Qinghuan.
"You're crazy."
Ying suddenly sprang up, snatched the basket and smashed it hard onto the ground, retorting to the woman, "If you hurt Qinghuan again, don't blame me for beating you."
