Chapter 169: The Ying Tribe's Revelry
Dawn was just breaking, yet the revelry at the Ying Tribe still had not ended. Waves of Roasted Meat fragrance and singing voices drifted through the dense forest—and of course, those sounds and scents also reached where Rongdi was.
After escaping the Ying Tribe's surveillance, he now stood beside a large tree, gazing toward the place ablaze with torchlight—that was Ying's tribe.
Lest Ying's people spot him, he had deliberately flown to the highest point, yet the wafting fragrance from over there kept making him swallow his saliva.
It was too tempting.
Suddenly, someone came up behind him.
"Chief, I'm back."
Lone Wolf and Whirlwind had returned together. Rongdi turned his head and glanced at the two. "Did you shake them off?"
"Shook them off. Chief, you're wounded?"
Only then did Lone Wolf notice that his arm was bleeding—it had been shot by Ying's people when he fled. Rongdi ought to have gone back to the tribe, but he still could not give up, wanting to see what else would happen at the Ying Tribe. So he had called Whirlwind over too.
Rongdi looked at his own wound, reached out to cover the bleeding spot, then pressed some strange grass over it. Only when the blood stopped flowing did he say, "It's fine. What's the situation over there?"
Lone Wolf and Whirlwind exchanged a glance. Whirlwind hurriedly said, "Chief, it's not good news. Tonight both the Wolf Tribe and the Cannibal Tribe brought Herbal Medicine. They're no longer short of Herbal Medicine now—they're celebrating and making food."
It had to be said that while spying, Whirlwind had caught the scent of the Roasted Meat. He had almost wanted to rush down and snatch a piece to see what it tasted like, how it could be so fragrant.
Watching the tribesmen eat so eagerly, he really wanted a taste, so… he secretly picked up an emptied Copper Pin and brought it back, planning to lick it for the flavor when no one was around and savor the memory.
"What? Na Yao and Ashu came?"
Rongdi had actually guessed long ago that the tribe was not short of Herbal Medicine—otherwise, how could that Ying have the mood to hold a Bonfire there? He punched the tree in fury, and instantly, leaves rustled down.
"Chief, we should go back. Now that three tribes have joined together, their next step will surely be to deal with us. We should prepare early."
"Joined together?"
Rongdi was furious. "What do you mean?"
Whirlwind hurriedly said, "A Blood Oath—now the Ying Tribe, the Cannibal Tribe, and the Wolf Tribe have become Brother Tribes. Chief, we can't wait any longer."
"Damn it."
Rongdi gave a cold scoff. He had waited this long only for three tribes to form an alliance? "Chief…"
Lone Wolf knew he was very angry. In truth, he still blamed him inwardly—if he hadn't been unable to let go of that female, those two tribes might have been theirs. Now they had actually joined with Ying, and there would be even less chance in the future.
"What else did they say?"
"That Nan Qinghuan is going to build houses at the Ying Tribe, and make some kind of Demo Tribe?"
"Demo Tribe? What does that mean?"
"This subordinate doesn't understand what it means either. Chief, what do we do now?"
Rongdi was furious. He had originally wanted to wait for everyone in the Ying Tribe to fall ill, to wait for Nan Qinghuan to come begging for mercy, begging him to take her away from here. But he hadn't expected… he had overlooked it—overlooked Na Yao's and Ashu's loyalty to Nan Qinghuan.
Seeing the two so nervous, Rongdi instead grew calm. "No rush. Their illness still hasn't been cured, has it? They may have the Herbal Medicine, but whether it can actually cure them is still uncertain."
These words left the two somewhat puzzled. "Chief, what do you mean?"
Did he still have a backup plan? Rongdi gave a cold scoff, his sharp gaze fixed on the bustling place not far away. After a long while, he let out a derisive laugh. "No rush. Perhaps I haven't lost yet."
"Chief…"
"Go tell that old man Elder to hurry up and make his move."
In the damp Cave, Shiva stood on tiptoe, peering toward the lively place outside, her eyes full of anticipation.
That meat smelled so good. She was starving and wanted to go out, but there were guards posted outside.
"Go get me something to eat. I'm hungry."
Those few tribesmen glanced at her. "Nothing to eat. There won't be any until tomorrow."
"How dare you treat me like this? I am Shiva. You…"
"What Shiva? Right now the tribe only has Om. We all listen to Om. Om is going to build houses for us to live in. Shiva, you're too foolish. You've offended Om and Ying—they won't care about you."
"Houses?"
Shiva was half-dead with anger. That female was going to build houses too? Her body itched unbearably. She had made some medicine herself and taken it, but it was no use—and the itching only got worse, which made her even more irritable, itching and hungry at the same time.
"Old woman."
Outside, Elder had returned. He held a Banana Leaf in his hand and pulled out a lump of sweet potato from inside. "If you're hungry, eat this."
She had wanted to eat meat, but her stomach was too empty so she had to make do. She reached out, took the sweet potato, and bit into it. "What's the situation outside? Did you go eat meat?"
At the mention of this, the old man got angry. "Don't even bring it up. That Nan Qinghuan has some nerve. I wanted to bring some meat back for you, and she snatched it away from me."
"What? She dared treat you like that?" Shiva was so furious she stuffed the sweet potato into her mouth in one bite and wolfed it down, then began scratching herself all over. "As long as that female exists in the tribe for a single day, you and I will never have any standing. We have to find a way to kill her."
Elder was so angry his mouth twisted. "Kill her? Didn't you see? that Yao and Ashu both listen to her, and so does Ying. That female doesn't take us seriously at all now. How are we supposed to kill her?"
Hearing this, Shiva felt a mix of frustration and disappointment. "It's all because of Wolf Girl Acai—truly useless. If she had made Ying like her, things wouldn't be this miserable, and she wouldn't have dragged me down too. Sigh, what about Xiaohei? Why hasn't he come back? Did he stay over there eating meat?"
Elder was even more furious. "Xiaohei—don't even mention it. I was almost thrown into the fire and burned to death too."
"What happened?"
"Don't ask, old woman. Given the current situation, we can't stay in the Tribe anymore. Do you want to leave with me or not?"
Elder wanted to leave this place, because he felt that if he stayed any longer, Ying would kill him.
Although it was Na Yao who killed Xiaohei, Ying was so smart—he surely already knew that he and Rongdi had colluded. When that time came… he needed to leave.
Shiva, however, could not bear to. She took a deep look at the Cave she lived in. "Leave? Why should I? I've lived here my whole life. If anyone should scram, it's Nan Qinghuan. What are you afraid of? My mother's tribe is powerful—they wouldn't dare do anything to us."
"If we don't leave—she's gotten the Herbal Medicine and is brewing medicine now. In a few days the tribesmen's illness will be cured, and then they'll start building houses. All the tribesmen are on their side—can the two of us still stay?"
Was she supposed to watch the tribesmen live in new houses while they were abandoned here? Shiva's face darkened and she smiled sinisterly. "Build houses…"
