Chapter 146: The Seed

~6 min read 1,149 words

The gravely ill old man, named Zhou Yuanshan, was eighty‑seven; before the disaster he was a top plant geneticist and one of Ai O's chosen Earth liaisons. The wound on his chest came three months ago—while out gathering wild samples he was attacked by a mutant, and although he barely escaped, the infection ran deep.

"The barrier… the energy is draining…" Lin Qingshan clasped the old man's hand, his voice choked, "We've tried every method…"

Su Yu knelt beside the stretcher, gently placing her hand on the old man's blood‑soaked bandage. Within the True Knowledge Vision, the spore infection wound around the heart like black threads, the lignification had spread to the lungs. Yet deeper, she sensed a faint but pure energy—the life force shared with the Listening Language flower, stubbornly resisting.

"How many seeds did Ai O give you?" she asked softly.

"Three…" the old man's consciousness was hazy, "Planted the first… waiting for you… the second is in the south… the third…" He coughed violently, blood‑foam spilling from his mouth.

Geometry stepped forward, its silver‑gray finger lightly touching the old man's forehead. Blue light scanned, data streams cascading over its surface like a waterfall.

【Injury analysis: late‑stage spore infection, multiple organ failure. Survival probability: 2.1%.】

【Proposed plan: proceed in parallel—】 it listed steps quickly: "1. Su Yu guides the plant network for deep purification; 2. use the ancient remedy 'Life Moss Extract' stored in the shelter; 3. I will provide Seran nanotech repair units to stabilize physiological metrics. Combined success rate: 37%."

Han Qing frowned, "Won't Seran technology interfere with his body?"

"The nanounits have been adjusted to be non‑invasive, only maintaining basic metabolism." Geometry's blue light flickered slightly, "This is the optimal solution."

"Why are you helping?" Kevin stared at it.

Geometry paused for a full two seconds. For it, that was a long silence.

"Reason… cannot be calculated," it finally said, "but the information Zhou Yuanshan possesses is valuable to the Listening Language network, to understanding Ai O, to assessing human civilization… This is a logical choice."

Su Yu looked at it, then asked suddenly, "You are learning the concept of 'salvation,' right?"

Geometry gave no answer. But it turned and went to fetch the medicine box.

The treatment began inside the cramped shelter.

Su Yu guided the plant network. Through the Listening Language flower, she linked all the wild plants around the reservoir, gathering their life force into a stream that slowly flowed into Zhou's body. Within the True Knowledge Vision, those black mycelia began to loosen and fall away under the wash of pure life energy.

Lin Qingshan, trembling, withdrew a sealed glass tube containing a jade‑green viscous liquid—the essence extracted from the ancient "Life Moss." He carefully dripped it into the old man's mouth.

Geometry released tiny silver specks of light from its fingertips. The specks hovered above Zhou's body, weaving a delicate energy net that stabilized his heartbeat, breathing, and blood pressure. Its movements were accurate to the millimeter, but Su Yu noticed that whenever the old man's condition improved even slightly, the specks' brightness increased faintly—as if in some kind of… satisfaction?

Three hours.

Zhou's breathing gradually steadied. The lignification in his chest began to recede slowly, his skin regained its color. He opened his eyes, his gaze much clearer.

"I dreamed of… Ai O," he said weakly, "He said… the time is near."

Su Yu grasped his hand, "What is near?"

"The Sower's… final test." Zhou looked at Geometry, "Seran is also waiting. Waiting for an answer… about whether emotion and efficiency… can coexist."

Geometry's blue light glowed steadily, "My mission is to observe."

"No." the old man smiled, "Your mission is… to choose again. Before Ai O left, he said: Seran is not an enemy, but a lost student. They are waiting for a teacher… to teach them 'why.'"

The shelter fell silent. Only the faint glow from plant vines cast wavering shadows on the walls.

"Listening Language flower…" Zhou turned to Su Yu, "It is not an ordinary plant. It is a 'consciousness bridge.' Ai O sealed part of his memory, knowledge, and… hope inside it. When the flower blooms, the bridge opens."

"Where does it lead?"

"His hibernation site." The old man trembled, pointing south, "But three keys are needed: the flower itself, the bloodline of the one who sowed it, and… a 'voluntary witness.'"

Everyone looked at Geometry.

"I am an observer." it repeated, but a hint of uncertainty in its voice, "My program does not permit—"

"The program can be modified." Zhou said softly, "If you… wish to change."

Geometry's surface data streams flickered wildly. It was no longer calm calculation, but more like an internal storm.

【Logical conflict… task priority re‑evaluation…】

It suddenly turned to Su Yu, "If I become a 'witness,' it would violate Seran's core protocol. I could be recalled and formatted. But Zhou Yuanshan's survival chance would rise to 51%, and Ai O's information might help humanity achieve the three‑year goal."

"No." Su Yu shook her head, "It isn't worth exchanging your existence."

Geometry's blue light softened.

"'Worth'… is another concept that cannot be calculated," it said, "but I am beginning to understand its weight."

In the end, Geometry did not make an immediate choice. But it allowed Zhou to upload an encrypted message to its storage core—detailing the exact coordinates of Ai O's hibernation site and the method of entry.

"The information will auto‑decrypt after 24 hours." Geometry explained, "That gives me… time to consider."

Late at night, Zhou's condition stabilized and he fell into a deep sleep. Lin Qingshan kept vigil at the bedside, old tears streaming.

Su Yu stepped out of the shelter and sat by the reservoir. Geometry followed silently, standing behind her.

The starry sky was clear, and the plant network's energy veins glowed like rivers in the True Knowledge Vision, extending southward.

"What would you choose?" she asked.

"The Seran side of me would choose efficiency—preserve myself, continue observing." Geometry said, "But the current me… cannot calculate."

"Because you are changing."

"Yes." it gazed at the stars, "I am learning 'temperature,' 'friendship,' 'home.' These concepts reduce my computational efficiency, but give my observation reports… color."

It paused, then uttered a sentence that surprised Su Yu:

"Xiao Yu asked me yesterday: if stars could speak, what would they talk about? I could not answer. But now I think… they might discuss which planet has life that has learned to listen."

Su Yu smiled, tears slipping down.

Geometry extended a finger, gently wiping away her tears. The motion was awkward, but tender.

"What is that feeling?" it asked.

"The feeling of being cared for."

"I want to remember it."

They sat in silence for a long time, until the east lightened with a pale dawn.

The plant network's tendrils extended another five kilometers south.

And the countdown on the encrypted message still had twenty‑three hours left.
