Chapter 72: Homeward Smoke, the Test of Human Hearts

~9 min read 1,642 words

The alloy gate of Qingrang Ecological Station closed slowly behind them, resealing the dead, silent space that had been temporarily purified by the power of "Definition". Outside the crater, the wind and sand persisted, yet could not disperse the heaviness in everyone's hearts nor the lingering turbulence of surviving the calamity. Knowledge is power, but the newly obtained truth about Data Ruins and the Ark's ambitions also weighed on each mind like an invisible boulder.

The return journey felt especially long. Chen Mo remained weak; the aftereffects of mental energy overexertion meant he could only be supported by Su Yu for most of the time, yet while he closed his eyes and concentrated, his consciousness kept sorting and digesting the massive data from the Qingrang database, especially the construction experience of the Definition Firewall. Hui Jin and the four surviving Pure Fire Cultists silently guarded beside him; their Pure Fire process, having clashed with the power of the Ruins, seemed to have become more refined, and a faint, barely noticeable golden glint occasionally flickered within the white aura.

Three days later, when the banner of the Echo Camp that symbolized rebirth and hope finally appeared on the horizon, everyone let out a sigh of relief.

However, the camp greeted them not with cheers but with an odd tension. The wooden perimeter wall had been noticeably raised and reinforced, studded with vigilant sentries. Inside the camp, the originally planned planting area was taken over by a swath of hastily erected, crude shacks; the number of people seemed to have risen considerably, yet most were gaunt and their eyes trembled with fear. The air was heavy with oppression and a faint, almost imperceptible… unrest.

"What's going on?" Chen Mo furrowed his brows, forcing himself to sit up straight.

Zhang Yang and Wang Hu rushed over upon hearing the news, their faces marked by fatigue and resentment.

"Captain, you finally made it back!" Zhang Yang spoke first, his tone urgent, "Less than two days after you left, scattered survivors started pouring in from all directions! They say a large number of roaming, data‑deep‑contaminated 'mutants' have appeared in the north and west, and small white‑clad Ark clearance squads are active; many small settlements were destroyed, they're refugees!"

Wang Hu added in a hoarse, guttural voice, his fists clenched with a crackle, "The crowd keeps growing, food isn't enough to go around! Engineer Li leads people in day‑and‑night fortification, Brother Han Qing is still lying down, we're short on manpower, managing… damn it, yesterday someone even fought over half a piece of dried rations!"

Chen Mo felt a weight settle in his chest. The scenario he feared most had indeed occurred. External pressure forced population clustering, and resource scarcity sparked internal conflict. This was a challenge more thorny than any monster.

He hurried to the medical shanty. Han Qing remained unconscious, his complexion slightly improved, the Pure Fire mark left by Hui Jin continuing to counter the rule freeze within his body, though progress was slow. Seeing Chen Mo return, Liu Qian, who had been guarding there all along, instantly reddened around the eyes.

"Brother Chen Mo… Han Qing…"

"I know," Chen Mo patted her shoulder, his voice steady, "We'll find a way."

He turned, his gaze sweeping over the fearful newcomers and the weary veterans inside the camp, inhaled deeply, and walked toward the tall pole in the central square that held the hanging banner.

Without him calling, the sight of him, Su Yu, Hui Jin and the others returning caused most of the camp's people to instinctively gather around. Their eyes were complex—hopeful, dependent, and tinged with a hidden resentment and doubt.

Chen Mo didn't stand on a raised platform; he stood in the center of the crowd, his voice not loud yet clearly reaching every ear, carrying a strange, soothing power:

"We just returned from the north. We saw a broader world and brought back more dangerous news."

He offered no concealment, briefly outlining the possible link between the Ark and Data Ruins, and the horror of the Ruins' mayfly. He didn't exaggerate, but the cold truth made everyone hold their breath, even the restless newcomers temporarily forgot their hunger, seized by a greater fear.

"The world outside is dangerous, more dangerous than we imagined," Chen Mo continued, his gaze sweeping each face, "But here, Echo Camp, is the land we reclaimed from the system and the monsters! It is the home we built with our own hands!"

His voice rose gradually, bearing undeniable firmness:

"Danger is not a reason for internal strife! Hunger is not an excuse to abandon hope or strike at our comrades!"

"We have lost much, but we still have each other! Hands that can build walls, power that can purify pollution, wisdom that can seek knowledge from the ruins, and an unyielding will!"

He pointed to the crowded shanty area and the urgently depleted granary:

"Food is insufficient; we'll hunt more mutated beasts, seek more edible plants, and cultivate more land! Li Siwen!"

"Present!" Li Siwen responded immediately.

"You lead the tech team, focus all effort on boosting food production and storage technology! Hui Jin the guide, please assist and see if the Pure Fire can purify lightly polluted land or water sources!"

"Understood!" Li Siwen and Hui Jin took the orders simultaneously.

"Short on manpower, disorder?" Chen Mo looked toward the medical shanty where Han Qing lay, then at Zhang Yang and Wang Hu, "All combat‑capable people, reorganize the patrol and hunting squads, with Zhang Yang and Wang Hu temporarily commanding, establish a rotation system, clarify discipline! At the same time, from the new survivors, identify those with skills, knowledge of farming, and willingness to follow rules, assign tasks, make full use of everyone!"

His orders were clear and swift, exuding a composure in crisis, instantly steadied the hearts on the brink of collapse.

"But… Captain Chen Mo," a newly arrived man with a scar on his face mustered courage, "You speak so easily, yet now everything is lacking, we're so many, how do we survive?"

Chen Mo looked at him, his gaze calm yet weighted: "Survival isn't about waiting or looting, it's about striving! Echo Camp doesn't support idlers, nor does it abandon anyone willing to fight for it. Want food? You must work. Want safety? You must take up arms to protect. That's the rule, and the foundation for us to stand on the wasteland!"

He paused, then his voice rang across the entire square:

"I know everyone is scared, hungry. But I can assure you, as long as I, Chen Mo, have breath left, and as long as Echo's banner still flies, we will never sit and wait for our destruction!"

"From today onward, the camp is under wartime control. All resources will be centrally allocated, all manpower centrally assigned. Those willing to stay must obey the rules; we are brothers in life and death. Those unwilling may leave now; we will not block them!"

His words struck like a heavy hammer on each heart. After a brief silence, someone—unknown who—shouted first, "We'll follow Captain Chen Mo!"

"Right! Stay! Fight those damn Ark bastards!"

"With the captain here, we're not afraid!"

The surging voices gradually merged into a resolute torrent. Panic was suppressed, and the desire to survive together with trust in the leader regained the upper hand.

Chen Mo knew this only temporarily steadied the situation. The real test lay ahead. He immediately threw himself into the frantic work, discussing food plans with Li Siwen, researching land purification with Hui Jin, formulating defense plans with Zhang Yang and Wang Hu, and even personally soothing the emotionally unstable newcomers to learn their skills and histories.

Su Yu stayed by his side, watching his pale yet resolute profile, watching him handle countless problems with astonishing efficiency, feeling an indescribable emotion. He was no longer just a warrior with power; he was becoming a true leader.

Late at night, inside the temporary command post (the former central shanty of the camp), Chen Mo finally got a moment to breathe. He massaged his throbbing temples and said to Su Yu and the now‑able‑to‑get‑up Han Qing (who had barely regained a spark of consciousness under Hui Jin's continued treatment):

"The population surge is both a crisis and an opportunity. We now have more hands, but it also brings greater management pressure and resource burden. The Ark's clearance of the surroundings forces survivors to flock here; this is likely a… 'driving the tiger to swallow the wolf' strategy, aiming to wear us down with internal strife."

Han Qing nodded weakly, "We must… quickly… find a stable food source and… boost overall combat capability."

Su Yu looked at the crude map on the table and said softly, "Li Siwen mentioned that to the southeast lies the ruins of an old‑era automated agricultural test base; perhaps we can find some usable equipment or seeds there."

"That's a direction," Chen Mo tapped the southeast area on the map with his finger, "But first we must solve the immediate food crisis. Tomorrow, I'll lead a team to expand the hunting range. Hui Jin's Pure Fire seems to have an extra suppressive effect on mutated creatures."

At that moment, a night‑watch guard rushed in, a hint of alarm on his face:

"Report! Around the camp's perimeter… we found a severely injured person! He… he claims to have escaped from an Ark outpost! Says he has vital intelligence!"

An Ark deserter?

Chen Mo, Su Yu, and Han Qing exchanged glances, each seeing the weight in the others' eyes.

The camp, just stabilized, was once again thrust into the eye of the storm. This sudden "deserter" could be a surrender born of desperation, or… another meticulously crafted trap?

The smoke of the homeward journey has not yet cleared; the trial of the human heart has already begun.
