Chapter 83: Seeds and Storms

~11 min read 2,123 words

The brief calm left after the Ark's main force withdrew was like the stifling heat before a storm. The "gift" taken away by the research vessel is the key piece in this game, but the waiting period for it to take effect is full of uncertainty.

Inside Pure Land a complex atmosphere of fatigue mixed with excitement pervaded. The warriors were busy clearing the battlefield, repairing defenses, and treating the wounded. Kaiwen, with his technical team, practically lived in front of the Luo Ya console, monitoring the energy recovery of the Order Barrier while trying to decipher more encrypted blocks of the Luo Ya database.

"Boss, the barrier's energy has recovered to 35%, and the basic defenses are back online. But hoping for another 'Barrier Radiance' in the short term is out of the question," Kaiwen reported, rubbing his blood‑shot eyes. "Also, I tried to track the signal signature of that 'gift,' but after entering the Ark's core network it was blocked by multiple encryption protocols, so we can't confirm whether it was successfully delivered to Prometheus."

Chen Mo nodded, his face revealing no emotion. "That's normal. If it were that easy to be tracked, it would actually mean our plan has failed. What we need to do now is trust that our 'packaging' is refined enough, and then wait patiently."

He walked to Su Yu, who was sitting with eyes closed to rest, and handed over a tube of nutrient serum. "How do you feel?"

Su Yu took it and forced a smile. "It's just the after‑effects of mental‑force overexertion; a bit of rest will fix it. Only… the feeling of being watched by a higher‑dimensional entity has become clearer." She pointed to her forehead. "True Knowledge Vision seems to have unlocked some fragments after this extreme use… about the Chaos Whisper that the Luo Ya civilization ultimately faced, and why they chose to disperse and seal the Order permissions."

Chen Mo's gaze sharpened. "Any concrete information?"

"Very vague… like looking through frosted glass," Su Yu tried to recall. "I only 'saw' countless stars extinguish in whispers, orderly physical laws collapsing, and the Luo Ya apparently activating a protocol called 'Final Definition,' but the price was… the silence of their civilization. They seem to fear some kind of 'chain reaction.'"

"Chain reaction…" Chen Mo chewed on the term, his eyes scanning the ancient Luo Ya runes. "Using Rule‑level Pollution against the Ark—could it also be triggering an uncontrollable 'chain reaction'?"

At that moment, Han Qing returned from outer‑ring reconnaissance, dust‑caked exoskeleton in hand, his tone heavy. "Chen Mo, something's off. The Ark's withdrawal was thorough; they left not even a single scouting post on the perimeter, which doesn't match their vengeful style. Moreover, I picked up some extremely faint, non‑Ark‑standard spatial signals of unknown origin, as if they're observing this place from a distance."

"A third‑party force?" Zhang Yang leaned in, curiosity on his face. "Could it be another survivor settlement? Seeing us win a battle, they want to join forces?"

"Doesn't seem so." Han Qing shook his head. "The signal is highly concealed; the tech level feels… not under the Ark."

A troublesome season. Having just repelled a strong enemy, they may already be in the sights of a new power. Chen Mo felt the pressure on his shoulders increase, but he could not let that anxiety reach the team.

"When troops arrive, the commander blocks; when water comes, earth shields," Chen Mo said gravely. "Han Qing, expand long‑range reconnaissance and focus on those unknown signals. Everyone else, use the time to rest and improve. Kaiwen, prioritize repairing and refining our internal defense and early‑warning systems. Hui Jin, the use of Pure Fire power needs further development; we need more tactical innovations like 'Definition Fragility.'"

He looked at everyone, his voice firm. "We have the initiative and now possess Pure Land and the Luo Ya legacy. That doesn't mean we can rest easy. The Ark won't be satisfied, and unknown threats may lurk in the shadows. We must make the most of every second to become stronger."

In the following days, Pure Land entered a rapid development phase. Guided by Kaiwen and the Luo Ya database, the warriors began re‑equipping with weapons and armor upgraded using Luo Ya technology; though still preliminary, their performance already far surpassed the Ark's standard gear. Hui Jin led the Pure Fire Cultists together with Kaiwen's team to attempt inscribing Pure Fire runes onto weapons or defensive structures, granting them rule‑level properties. Su Yu worked to adapt to and explore more abilities of True Knowledge Vision, trying to discern the threat beyond the fog.

Chen Mo wasn't idle either; he spent most of his time at the console studying the Luo Ya civilization's command structure and strategic thinking, trying to grasp the true power of the Order permissions. He discovered that the Luo Ya's use of Definition extended far beyond defense and offense, involving energy conversion, material reconstruction, and even localized spacetime stabilization.

Amid this tense yet fulfilling atmosphere, a week slipped by unnoticed.

That night, a shrill alarm suddenly ripped through Pure Land's silence!

"Massive anomalous energy fluctuations detected! Source… direction of the Ark headquarters!" Kaiwen, fully alert, shouted and leapt up.

On the holographic display in the control room, the area representing the Ark headquarters was now shrouded by an extremely abnormal, twisted colored halo. The halo kept expanding, and wherever it passed even the images returned by monitoring satellites showed bizarre distortions.

"It's Prometheus! It's been activated! But… the energy readings are off!" Kaiwen rapidly pulled up the data, his complexion turning paler. "The energy output frequency is wildly unstable, filled with… contradictory logical conflicts! It's like… the system itself is fighting."

Chen Mo sprang to his feet, a flash of brilliance in his eyes. "Our 'gift' has taken effect!"

Almost simultaneously, Su Yu clutched her forehead and let out a painful groan. "Chaos… so many chaotic sounds… the Prometheus 'purification' wave… has been twisted!"

On the hologram, one could clearly see that the "purification" light wave, which should have been pure and orderly, became mottled and bizarre after leaving the Ark headquarters' range. As it swept over a heavily irradiated zone, the radioactive dust was not cleared; instead it coalesced into a kind of short‑lived, phosphorescent dust creature that drifted aimlessly, causing anything it touched to decay rapidly!

It passed over an Ark‑controlled automated farm; the crops grew and mutated at a visible frantic pace, the fruits huge yet twisted, exuding an ominous aura, while the managing agricultural robots went berserk, attacking each other.

It even swept over a squad of Ark ships that happened to be on external patrol; the warships' shield systems overloaded and smoked, and some crew members suffered mental breakdowns, firing at their comrades!

Prometheus's "purification" turned into uncontrollable "distortion" and "chaos"!

"Hahaha!" Kaiwen laughed wildly, slapping the table as he watched the uncontrolled scene. "It worked! Our Rule‑level Pollution is in effect! It's polluted the very concept of 'purification'! Now the Ark's ultimate weapon is backfiring everywhere! Let's see how they'll 'purify' the world now!"

In the underground space, watching the bizarre changes outside via monitors, everyone showed shocked and excited expressions. They hadn't expected the "gift" to have such immediate—and so dramatic—effect.

"Is… is this the power of Rule‑level?" Zhang Yang opened his mouth wide. "Turning the enemy's ultimate weapon into a comic performer?"

Wang Hu scratched his head and managed, "It's more effective than me chopping people."

Hui Jin stared at the twisted light wave in the projection, hoarsely saying, "The backside of order is chaos. They try to erase every 'impurity' with absolute order, not realizing that act itself creates greater chaos. We merely… gave it a gentle push."

Chen Mo also breathed a sigh of relief; the plan had succeeded. This undoubtedly dealt a heavy blow to the Ark's 'Evolution Faction.' In the short term, they likely won't have the energy to trouble Pure Land again, and will be swamped dealing with the mess caused by Prometheus.

However, Su Yu's brow remained furrowed; she pointed to the cores of those twisted zones in the projection. "Something's wrong… look, the core of these distortions is gathering energy, forming… a new kind of order! A… chaotic order!"

Everyone stared, and indeed found that at the centers of those mutated farms, activated radiation zones, and fleet chaos, the energy was not wholly chaotic but forming an incomprehensible, self‑consistent bizarre structure. It seemed that Rule‑level Pollution was not merely destructive, but birthing some… new, unknowable thing.

"Chain reaction…" Chen Mo recalled Su Yu's earlier premonition, his mood heavy again. They seemed to have opened a Pandora's box, releasing something that could far exceed their expectations.

Prometheus's loss of control caused a massive upheaval across the wasteland.

Survivor outposts that had dared not speak out under the Ark's oppressive rule now seized the opportunity to rise. Some captured resource nodes that the Ark had lost control of due to the chaos; others began openly resisting the Ark's "purification" policy; even a few small peripheral Ark militias, seeing the tide turn, withdrew their equipment and personnel from the Ark's system.

The 'Echo' organization, thanks to its brilliant record of repelling the Ark's main force and apparently causing Prometheus's malfunction (details unknown to the outside, but the news of the Ark's main force being defeated in Pure Land could not be hidden), rose to fame. Scattered survivor groups, after hardships, began to admire…

Pure Land is no longer just a hidden outpost; it is becoming a symbol, a banner.

Chen Mo remained cautiously open to this. He dispatched Han Qing's squad to rigorously screen and background‑check newcomers, ensuring no Ark spies slipped in. At the same time, he demarcated an area on Pure Land's outskirts to set up a preliminary reception and settlement camp.

"Boss, at this rate we'll soon become a small city‑state!" Kaiwen said, eyes on the constantly updating population and resource lists in the database, both excited and a bit worried. "Managing this many people is far more complex than fighting."

"So we need to establish rules, order." Chen Mo said, watching the steady flow of Luo Ya runes on the console, a blueprint forming in his mind. "Not the Ark's cold, ruthless order, but an order based on survival, development, and mutual aid—a warm order. The Luo Ya 'Order Barrier' protects physical space; what we need to build is a societal Order Barrier."

He gathered the core members to discuss drafting Pure Land's basic statutes, contribution system, and defensive assignments. Zhang Yang was in charge of training combat personnel and constructing defensive works; Wang Hu, with his bravery and fairness, oversaw internal security and arbitration; Han Qing handled external reconnaissance, intelligence, and elite operations; Su Yu, leveraging her True Knowledge Vision and keen insight, assisted Chen Mo in decision‑making and managed communication and psychological counseling for newcomers; Kaiwen, of course, served as chief technologist, responsible for all research, application, and upkeep related to Luo Ya relics; Hui Jin was tasked with propagating the Pure Fire doctrine (with its fanatical aspects removed, Pure Fire power is highly effective against spiritual contamination and radiation) and handling matters concerning spirit and faith.

A rough yet vibrant management system began to operate in this underground space and its surrounding areas.

However, just as Pure Land was flourishing, Han Qing returned with another unsettling report.

"The unknown signal has reappeared. This time it's closer, and… seems to have multiple sources. They're observing us very patiently, and… observing the chaos caused by Prometheus at the Ark headquarters." Han Qing marked several suspicious coordinates on the map. "Their counter‑recon abilities are extremely strong; we can't get any closer."

Chen Mo stared at the faint markings on the map, as if he could see a few calm eyes hidden behind Deep Space.

"Maintain surveillance, do not provoke," Chen Mo ordered. "At the same time, accelerate our own development. Only by being strong enough can we confront any unknown storm."

He stepped to the console, placed his hand on the core rune, feeling the flow of order power that originated from the ancient civilization.

The Ark's threat had temporarily eased, but the larger game seemed only to be beginning. The "seed" they sowed sparked an unexpected storm, drawing distant eyes. The path to reclaiming the world has never been smooth.

But now, Chen Mo's gaze was more resolute than ever before.

They now had a base, comrades, the power of an ancient civilization, and had ignited a flame of hope amid the chaos.

The storm was coming, but they were no longer wild grass tossed by the wind; they were seedlings taking deep root, ready to face the rain.

A new overture has already begun.
