Chapter 86: Echoes of the Judge

~11 min read 2,155 words

"Seed Project?"

Chen Mo keenly caught the keyword, the glow of the Luo Ya rune longsword in his hand flickering slightly, forming a subtle standoff with the opponent's cold, pure "Order" power. He could feel the Resonance within him, derived from the Luo Ya civilization, causing the commander of the "Order Blade" before him to hesitate.

"Are you an heir of the Luo Ya civilization?" Chen Mo tried to steady the opponent, while signaling Zhang Yang, Wang Hu and the others with his eyes to stay calm. A direct clash was clearly unwise; the opponent's displayed technology and power tier completely crushed them.

The silver‑armored commander—based on the fine patterns on his shoulder guard, Kaiwen quickly designated his code as "Cross Star"—had his Cross Observation Mirror still locked onto Chen Mo's blade, the electronic voice bearing a scrutinizing tone: "Heir? No. Luo Ya is a failure, a compromiser. We, the Order Blades, follow the steps of Lord Judge, practice the path of absolute Order, and eliminate any unstable factors that could lead to Chaos."

His words were cold and absolute, as if stating a universal truth.

"Lord Judge... is part of the Luo Ya civilization?" Su Yu asked softly, her True Knowledge Vision straining to pierce the opponent's dense Order shield, trying to sense more information, yet it felt like scratching an itch through a boot.

"Lord Judge, Sir, is a member of the final Luo Ya council, the only sage who has seen the true nature of the Chaos Whisper!" Cross Star's tone carried an almost fanatical reverence, "When other councilors chose to disperse permissions and let the civilization languish, only Lord Judge advocated a proactive strike, using absolute Order barriers to inversely define and purge Chaos!"

Kaiwen, listening nearby, clicked his tongue: "What a character—so the Luo Ya civilization also has hawks and doves? This 'Judge' sounds like a super hardliner!"

"So, you sealed off this place to carry out Lord Judge's plan?" Chen Mo pressed, "What is the 'Seed Project' then?"

Cross Star seemed to realize he had disclosed too much, instantly reverting to a cold demeanor: "Insufficient base permissions, no authority to access detailed 'Seed Project' data. This site is the Judge's relic, the 'Stagnant Realm'; any unauthorized intruder must undergo inspection and Purification. Final warning: lay down your weapons and submit to Order assessment."

Behind him, nine Order Blade warriors stepped forward in unison, the hum of their energy weapons sharpening, exuding intense pressure. The restrained Han Qing and others showed strained expressions, yet could not move a inch.

Seeing the negotiation on the brink of collapse, Chen Mo's mind raced. A direct clash was a poor choice; the opponent's aim seemed to be "inspection" rather than immediate execution, perhaps leaving room for maneuver. The key lay in "Resonance"—the opponent reacted to Luo Ya power.

"We can accept the inspection," Chen Mo suddenly said, startling everyone. He slowly sheathed his rune longsword, yet the Luo Ya energy within him quietly accelerated, "But you must guarantee the safety of our companions, and the inspection should be reciprocal. Since you claim to inherit the will of the Judge, and Luo Ya shares the Judge's origin, we have the right to understand the legitimacy of your actions."

He was gambling, betting that the opponent's notion of "Order" included some degree of "procedural justice" rather than sheer violence.

Cross Star fell silent, the light of the Cross Observation Mirror flickering, seemingly processing this logically consistent request. After a moment, he spoke: "Agreed. Cease resistance and follow us into the Stagnant Realm. During the inspection, if no Chaos contamination is detected, we may release uninvolved personnel."

"Chief!" Zhang Yang rushed, urging him to lower his weapon and walk with these iron cans, which felt worse than killing him.

Chen Mo halted him with a glance, whispering, "Trust me, act when the time comes." He was the first to disarm, handing his sword to a stepping forward Order Blade warrior.

Su Yu and Kaiwen exchanged glances, also choosing to trust Chen Mo, and laid down their weapons. Wang Hu let out a muffled hum, slamming his battle axe heavily onto the ground. Zhang Yang muttered curses, but ultimately complied reluctantly.

"A wise choice," Cross Star gestured, and two warriors stepped forward, fastening shackles that emitted a soft white glow onto Chen Mo and the others' wrists. The moment the shackles clicked, everyone felt their internal energy flow become sluggish, though not entirely cut off.

Under the escort of ten Order Blade guards, Chen Mo's party, together with the previously captured Han Qing squad and Zhao Ming squad, entered the mist‑shrouded depths of the "Silent Valley".

Passing through the mist, the scene before them opened up, causing all Pure Land members to gasp a cold breath.

The valley interior was not the imagined ruin but an immense, futuristically tech‑laden base. Silver‑white architectural lines were sleek and cold; countless probes of unknown function and energy conduits spanned everywhere, and the air hummed with a low, steady vibration. Everything here was orderly and clean, unlike any part of the wasteland, starkly contrasting with the decayed world outside.

They were led into the interior of the most majestic pyramid‑shaped structure—the Stagnant Realm.

The interior was spacious; at its center stood a massive circular platform surrounded by tiered, rising control consoles laden with complex instruments. Most striking was a huge polyhedral crystal hovering above the platform, continuously undergoing intricate geometric transformations, emitting a cold Order force sharing the same source as the Order Blade warriors, as if it were the heart of the entire base.

"Begin the inspection," Cross Star led Chen Mo and the others to the platform's edge. A beam of light projected from the crystal above swept over the group.

Chen Mo instantly felt an icy force attempting to infiltrate his consciousness, probing his memories, thoughts, even the essence of his soul. The Luo Ya energy within him automatically generated resistance, tugging against this force.

"High Luo Ya Resonance detected... permission assessment in progress... assessment failed, unknown encrypted protocol present," the cold electronic tone echoed through the space.

"Mutation perception ability detected... source analysis... not Chaos side, inclined toward Order definition... potential assessment: high."

This was the scan on Su Yu.

"Technical analysis and adaptation talent detected... compatibility with basic Luo Ya technology: excellent."

This was the assessment of Kaiwen.

"High‑intensity life response and combat instinct detected... Order side inclination... strong plasticity."

This was Wang Hu.

"Detection... hmm? Logical confusion, obvious aggression tendency, recommend tighter control," the electronic voice stuttered when scanning Zhang Yang.

Zhang Yang: "...???" He felt despised.

When scanning the captured Han Qing and others, the electronic voice displayed: "Memory data extraction complete, no core secrets accessed, classified as releasable units."

Cross Star nodded, waved his hand, and the invisible force restraining Han Qing and the others vanished; they staggered briefly, regained freedom, but their weapons were not returned.

"You may leave now," Cross Star said to Han Qing and the others, then turned to Chen Mo, "The five of you require further inspection, especially you, the Luo Ya Resonator."

Han Qing looked at Chen Mo, his gaze asking.

Chen Mo gave a slight nod: "First take the brothers back, inform Hui Jin that we're fine and proceeding as planned." He was referring to Pure Land's emergency protocol.

Han Qing stared deeply at Chen Mo, then without hesitation led the newly freed team members away swiftly. He knew staying would only become a burden.

Now, only Chen Mo, Su Yu, Kaiwen, Zhang Yang, and Wang Hu remained on the platform, facing a group of cold Order Blades and the hovering Judge crystal.

"Now, can you tell us the truth about the 'Seed Project' and the Judge?" Chen Mo looked up at the massive crystal, feeling the icy scanning force focused primarily on him.

Cross Star was about to speak when, suddenly, the entire Stagnant Realm trembled slightly, and the Judge crystal above accelerated its transformation speed, emitting an even more dazzling glare!

"Warning! High‑priority external command detected! Command source... 'Seed' sequence!" the electronic tone became urgent.

Cross Star spun sharply, faced the crystal, kneeling on one knee: "Guardians of the Stagnant Realm, awaiting orders!"

The crystal projected a hazy Star Map; at its center a dim planet was marked, beside it complex Luo Ya script and... familiar code!

Kaiwen recognized it instantly: "That's... the code we used to communicate with the Observer! And that planet is Earth's old‑era designation!"

Next to the Star Map, a line of massive Luo Ya characters slowly floated up:

"'Seed' activated, 'Gardener' in position. Execute final phase: 'Chaos Whisper' source suppression protocol."

"'Gardener'... is that us?!" Kaiwen shouted, "Suppress the source of the Chaos Whisper? What a joke! That thing couldn't even be handled by the Luo Ya civilization!"

Cross Star rose, turning to Chen Mo; the cold electronic voice now carried a hint of... complex emotion? "Luo Ya Resonator, and your team. According to Lord Judge's final directive, when the 'Seed' activates and the 'Gardener' appears, possessing preliminary Order definition capability, the Stagnant Realm's permissions will be granted to the 'Gardener' to assist in executing the source suppression protocol."

"The 'Seed'... refers to the rule‑pollution program we implanted into 'Prometheus'?" Su Yu realized, "It's not just a weapon, but also a... beacon?"

"Correct," Cross Star confirmed, "The core of the 'Seed' is a reverse‑locating program researched by Lord Judge, based on Chaos logic. Once activated by Purification power, it can backtrack and mark the projection source of the Chaos Whisper in the material world. Your actions unintentionally completed the first step of the location."

Chen Mo felt a massive shock within. They had originally acted only to protect themselves and counter the Ark, yet they had become entangled in the greatest secret and plan of Luo Ya's final era! Had they become the chosen executors of this grand scheme?

"Why us?" Chen Mo asked the pivotal question, "Is it simply because I can trigger Luo Ya Resonance?"

"Not so," Cross Star shook his head, "Lord Judge deduced that at some point after Luo Ya's silence, within the spark of a new civilization, an individual or group would arise capable of understanding and wielding the contradictory unity of Order and Chaos. Your method of opposing the Ark—using rule‑pollution rather than sheer force—matches Lord Judge's definition of a 'Gardener': to guide, not destroy; to utilize contradictions rather than eliminate them."

He pointed at Chen Mo: "You, the Luo Ya Resonator, are the anchor of Order." Then at Su Yu: "Mutation perceiver, the eyes that discern truth." At Kaiwen: "Technical adaptor, the bridge linking past and future." He even gestured to Zhang Yang and Wang Hu: "Powerful warriors, the blades that clear obstacles on the path. Your team possesses the essential elements to execute the protocol."

Zhang Yang heard a cloud of confusion, but understood the final sentence: "So we still have to fight, huh? Should've said so earlier! All this mystique!"

Wang Hu summed up: "Who are we supposed to fight?"

The Cross Star ignored them and said to Chen Mo: "Now, make a choice, Luo Ya Resonance, Chen Mo. Will you accept the Judge's will, take up the role of 'Gardener', obtain partial permissions of the 'Stagnant Realm', and, for the survival of civilization, go to suppress the source of the Chaos Whisper?"

A massive influx of information slammed into Chen Mo's mind. The jump was too fast— from defending the homeland to suddenly reaching the level of saving civilization's survival? Moreover, the other side seemed to give a choice, but do they really have the right to refuse? After learning so many secrets…

He looked at his companions. In Su Yu's eyes was worry, but more so trust; Kaiwen showed excitement and eagerness; Zhang Yang and Wang Hu were, as always, the "just do it" attitude.

If the source of the Chaos Whisper is not suppressed, the entire Earth, even the whole civilization, could repeat Luo Ya's downfall. This is not merely responsibility, but survival.

Chen Mo took a deep breath, his gaze fixed firmly on the Judge's crystal:

"Tell me, where is the source? What must we do?"

The Cross Star's cross observation mirror, for the first time, seemed to bend slightly, as if it were… smiling?

"Permission transfer protocol initiated… Welcome, Gardener Chen Mo. The coordinates of the source are…"

When those coordinates were reported, everyone was stunned.

That place, they knew well—indeed, it could be called one of the origins of this wasteland disaster.

—From the old era, the ruins of the Global United Gene Backup and Deep Space Communications Center, code‑named "Ark" (sharing the name with the current Ark organization but with a different meaning). It is also deep underground in the area where the current Ark headquarters now stands!

What they were heading to was, unbelievably, the core, most dangerous part of the Ark's old nest!

The real adventure is only just beginning now.
