Chapter 88: Whispers of the Nest

~12 min read 2,305 words

The sight deep in the tunnel was nauseating; the walls, ceiling and floor were completely covered by a thick, pulsating dark‑red fungal carpet, and the air was filled with a strong, rotten sweet‑fishy smell. At the core of this carpet, a massive nest of slime, discarded metal and countless insect shells pulsed like a heart, emitting a strong, twisted life energy.

Above the nest hung an egg‑shaped, semi‑transparent object about the size of a car, within which a bloated, twisted shadow could be faintly seen— the insect matriarch!

"That's the thing!" Su Yu confirmed through the ocular device, "Its spiritual vibration is on the same frequency as 'Chaos Whisper'! It's commanding the insect tide!"

The insect tide seemed to sense the nest being threatened, grew even more frantic, and surged toward the assault squad without regard for anything.

"Cold Steel, Iron Anvil! Suppress the surrounding insects! Zhang Yang, Wang Hu, follow me, take out that egg!" Chen Mo barked, and the Order Governor battleblade surged with blue light.

"Copy!" Two Order Blade warriors immediately stood back‑to‑back, fully raising their energy shields; their weapons spewed scorching beams, carving a relatively safe zone amid the raging insect tide.

"Ha ha, finally a big one!" Zhang Yang roared with laughter, and the Siege Cannon aimed its explosive shotgun at the nest's base, pouring fire wildly to try to open a breach for the assault.

Wang Hu moved like a walking tank, swinging the Earth‑Shaker battle‑axe so densely that no gap remained, cleaving the charging elite guard insects into fragments and clearing a path for Chen Mo.

Chen Mo moved like lightning, his feet treading the writhing fungal carpet as he raced toward the massive egg. The nearer he got, the clearer the mind‑confusing whisper became, trying to burrow into his thoughts.

"Stay true to your core!" he growled low, the Luo Ya order power circulating within his body, repelling the noise. The runes on his battleblade glowed to the limit, aimed at the pulsating egg, and he drove it in hard!

Pfft!

Viscous, foul‑smelling liquid splattered out! The shadow inside the egg emitted a silent, high‑pitched scream, and the entire nest shook violently!

However, the expected scene of the insect matriarch dying and the tide collapsing did not occur. The pierced egg quickly withered, but the fungal carpet at the nest's core condensed and bulged even faster, forming an even larger, more twisted, grotesque face made of mycelium and insect corpses!

"Foolish… mortals…" a hoarse, overlapping voice rang directly in everyone's minds, full of malice and mockery, "I am… the extension of the Great Whisper… your order… is utterly vulnerable…"

Su Yu's face turned ashen: "No! That egg is a lure! The true core is this polluted fungal carpet itself! It has already merged with part of the 'Chaos Whisper' power!"

The fungal core's face opened a "gaping maw", and a dense, dark‑purple breath laced with intense spiritual contamination and physical corrosion spewed out, sweeping toward Chen Mo!

"Boss, watch out!" Zhang Yang's eyes widened as if about to split, wanting to rush forward but unable to reach.

Wang Hu let out a roar, trying to block with his body, but the breath's range was too vast!

At the critical moment, Chen Mo thrust the Order Governor battleblade violently into the ground, outputting order power at maximum capacity!

"Order Barrier – Miniature Version!"

A solid blue light shield instantly unfolded around him, blocking the lethal breath! The dark‑purple energy collided violently with the blue order shield, emitting a sizzling corrosive sound, and the shield thinned at a visible rate!

"Damn, this thing is far more troublesome than the Ark's mechs!" Zhang Yang shouted while bombarding the fungal core's face with his shotgun, but the effect was minimal; the explosives only made small pits in the fungal carpet, which were quickly regenerated.

Cold Steel's and Iron Anvil's attacks were likewise nullified by the fungal core's powerful energy field and regenerative ability.

"Physical and energy attacks are limited! We must break its connection to 'Chaos Whisper' on the rule level!" Su Yu shouted anxiously, her Insight ocular device capturing countless twisted energy threads between the fungal core and a higher‑dimensional entity.

"Rule level?" Chen Mo thought, his mind flashing. His order power can define, but the opponent also possesses rule‑level contaminating force, resulting in a stalemate.

At that moment, Kaiwen's voice came through the rear communicator, urgent and excited: "Boss! I've analyzed the energy structure here! This fungal core is a 'relay station'! It relies on continuous power from the deep underground source! Cut it off! Use the strongest order definition to temporarily shield its link to the source! Even if only for an instant!"

"Cut the link?" a flash of brilliance lit Chen Mo's eyes. He ripped the battleblade free, pouring all the order power within his body, together with his connection to the Luo Ya relics and even the subtle link to the 'Stasis Between', into it!

The battleblade emitted an unprecedented hum, its blue light almost solidifying!

He no longer defined 'defense' or 'attack'; instead, he condensed all his will and belief into a pure concept, and through the battleblade, he slashed fiercely at those invisible linking threads!

"Definition: In this realm, all laws… are severed!"

Hum—!

An invisible wave radiated outward from Chen Mo! It was not an energy shock, but a brief rewrite of the rules!

In that instant, the energy threads between the fungal core's face and the source seemed to be snapped by an unseen hand!

"No—!!!" the fungal core let out a harrowing, soul‑piercing scream! Its massive body convulsed violently, the dark‑red glow dimmed rapidly, and its terrifying regenerative ability abruptly ceased!

Now!

"Go!" Chen Mo, exhausted, half‑kneeling on the ground, shouted hoarsely.

"Take my axe!" Wang Hu seized the chance, roaring as he leapt, the Earth‑Shaker battle‑axe bearing mountain‑crushing, stone‑splitting force, and he slammed it into the exact center of the fungal core's face!

"I'll smash it!" Zhang Yang's shotgun also aimed at the split fissure, dumping all remaining ammunition into it!

Cold Steel's and Iron Anvil's energy beams, like surgical knives, precisely sliced the fungal core's central structure!

Deprived of source power and regeneration, the fungal core could no longer withstand the concentrated destructive onslaught; with a resentful wail, it exploded completely, turning into ash and slime fragments that rained down.

With the fungal core dead, the remaining insect tide in the tunnel, as if without command, instantly fell into chaos, beginning to slaughter each other or flee in all directions.

The crisis temporarily lifted, everyone exhaled in relief, leaning wearily against the walls to catch their breath. Chen Mo stood up with Su Yu's help; that last strike had nearly drained his strength.

"That move just now… was awesome, boss!" Zhang Yang panted, giving Chen Mo a thumbs‑up, "You cut its connection outright!"

"Rule‑level confrontation is extremely perilous," Hui Jin's voice came through the communicator (he had been remotely monitoring via Su Yu's ocular device), "Leader, are you alright?"

"I'm fine, just a bit drained," Chen Mo shook his head, eyes gazing deeper into the tunnel, "It seems the closer we get to the source, the more twisted creations appear, and the stronger they become."

After clearing the battlefield and taking a short rest, the squad pressed on. Passing through the destroyed nest area, the tunnel opened up, and ahead the outline of an old‑era subway station emerged.

However, just as they were about to enter the station hall, an anomaly regenerated!

At the station entrance, space warped like rippling water, and then three oddly shaped, silver‑white coffin‑like devices materialized silently onto the ground.

"Alert!" Han Qing's voice rang immediately from the shadows ahead; he, his ghost squad, and two Order Blades instantly entered combat mode.

Chen Mo and the others also raised their weapons at once.

The coffin lids slid open, and three… humanoid beings stepped out.

They wore silver‑white robes unlike the Order Blades' style, the robes streaming with star‑river‑like specks of light. Their faces were handsome yet lifeless, eyes deep as ancient wells, and most strikingly, a gently rotating prism crystal emitting soft white light was set in the center of each forehead.

They were the Observers who had previously had brief communications with the Pure Land!

The leading Observer stepped forward, his gaze fixed on Chen Mo, his voice ethereal and calm, gender indistinguishable: "'Gardener' Chen Mo. Your growth rate exceeds expectations."

"You?" Chen Mo remained wary, "You've been following us?"

"Observe, record, evaluate," the Observer replied, "The sprouting of the 'Seed' and the qualification of the 'Gardener' both require verification. You successfully eliminated the 'Whisper Spawn', proving you have the potential to continue onward."

"Cut the crap!" Zhang Yang shouted impatiently, "Enemy or ally? Draw a line!"

The Observer did not become angry, merely looking calmly at Zhang Yang: "The brute of power is also a piece of the puzzle. We are neither enemies nor allies. We are 'Watchers', inheriting the 'Recorder's' duty, observing the rise and fall of civilizations, ensuring 'Knowledge' does not become utterly extinguished by chaos."

"Recorder?" Chen Mo recalled the final council of the Luo Ya civilization, "What is your relation to the 'Judger'?"

"Colleagues with differing philosophies," the Observer answered, "The Judger seeks to eradicate chaos with absolute order; we believe chaos is also a universal constant, and total eradication is akin to a fool's dream. Our duty is to record chaos, understand chaos, and before the flame of civilization extinguishes, preserve its most essential 'records'."

He pointed at the crystal on his forehead: "This is the 'Civilization Prism,' storing the knowledge and memories of countless extinct civilizations."

Kaiwen's eyes went wide: "Damn! A mobile civilization database?! This thing… can I copy a copy?"

The observer glanced at him lightly: "Knowledge comes at a price. It is also beyond what you can bear at your current stage."

"Why are you here?" Su Yu asked. She could sense that these observers had no obvious hostility, but that transcendent, aloof attitude also made people uncomfortable.

"The time has come; the source of the 'Chaos Whisper' is active due to the 'Seed,' and agitated by the approach of the 'Gardener.' We will open a 'shortcut' to the core of the source, and ensure that the 'Record' is not interrupted during the final showdown. This is the 'limited assistance' we provide."

He raised his hand; the crystal on his forehead shot a beam of white light, striking a thick Isolation wall at the far end of the station. The wall, like melting ice, silently appeared a distorted light gate emanating unstable energy fluctuations.

"Pass through this gate, and you will be directly beneath the Ark's headquarters, where the source is hidden—a fusion of the old era's 'Gene Bank' and 'Deep Space Communication Array,' codenamed 'Abyssal Echo.'" The observer stepped aside, saying, "The choice is yours. Enter this gate, and there is no turning back. The final trial will be of will and belief, not mere strength."

Beyond the light gate, a faint, heart‑pounding noise could be heard—like the combined wails and whispers of billions of beings.

Chen Mo and his companions exchanged a glance, each seeing resolve in the other's eyes.

Having come this far, how could we turn back?

"Let's go." Chen Mo took a deep breath and stepped first into the twisted light gate.

Su Yu, Kaiwen, Zhang Yang, and Wang Hu followed closely. Han Qing signaled the Ghost Squad and the Order's Blade to stand guard outside, then also went in.

Watching the crowd disappear into the light gate, the observer leader's forehead crystal flickered faintly, and an ethereal voice whispered:

"Seed, Gardener, Order, Chaos… another crossroads of civilization. Let us witness whether this time it is utter downfall… or… rebirth from nirvana."

The scene beyond the light gate surpassed everyone's imagination.

This is not the interior of a conventional building, but a bizarre space that defies ordinary measurement. Beneathfoot is a dark‑red, pulsing "ground" like living tissue; overhead, a constantly twisting, shifting "sky" reflecting shattered stars and strange symbols. Countless thick, semi‑transparent energy conduits crisscross like veins, carrying viscous fluid that shimmers with multicolored filth‑stained spots.

At the center of the space lies an enormous aberrant conglomerate forged from countless twisted metal, biological tissue, and shattered screens. It throbs like a hideous heart, each beat emitting the maddening "Chaos Whisper," visible ripples of distortion spreading outward from it.

This is the "Abyssal Echo"! The Chaos Whisper's anchor point in the material world!

Beneath the conglomerate, remnants of old‑era facilities can be seen—shattered gene storage tanks, broken communication antenna bases… as if this monster grew and mutated from those human civilization artifacts.

"Ultra‑high intensity chaos contamination detected! Shield energy is being rapidly eroded!" Kaiwen's warning rang out over the team channel, his voice tinged with tremor.

Everyone felt an overwhelming pressure, not only physical but mental. Those whispers permeated everything, seeking to break their will and stir their deepest fears and despair.

"Hold fast your mind!" Chen Mo roared, the light of the Order Executor battle blade flickering like a candle in the wind amidst this chaos, yet stubbornly illuminating an area.

At that moment, the massive conglomerate seemed to sense their arrival; its shattered screen surface flared, revealing countless twisted faces and incomprehensible symbols. Simultaneously, several shapeless distortions formed of pure chaos energy split off from it, emitting piercing screeches as they lunged at the group.

The final battle has begun!

But this time, their foe is no longer the insect swarm or the fungal core, but a manifestation of the chaos source itself!

And deep within the core of the "Abyssal Echo," a pair of eyes—seemingly coalesced from countless fragmented consciences, brimming with endless malice and greed—slowly opened, locking onto Chen Mo, who wielded the Order's Blade.

The Gardener has arrived; the time of reaping is at hand.
