Chapter 11: Chen Sixuan
Clank. Clank.
Driving through the dark with unknown road conditions was clearly irrational; the loud noise drew waves of zombie howls from outside.
Lin Xian realized this couldn’t go on, so he rushed to the cab.
“We’ll pass over the elevated light rail line on the third ring road—we might stop there.”
Chen Sixuan seemed to sense Lin Xian’s concern and immediately offered him a viable solution.
“Good!”
Stopping on the elevated bridge would be considerably safer; most zombies on the ground couldn’t follow.
But what Lin Xian feared most right now was still that white monstrosity from earlier.
Squeak~
After the train halted atop the elevated structure, Lin Xian immediately turned off all interior lights and continuously monitored the outside.
“What was that thing just now?” Chen Sixuan asked, her face grim.
Lin Xian shook his head. “Who knows? If one of those things locks onto us, we won’t die—but we’ll lose a layer of skin.”
“So what do we do? Wait until daylight to leave the city?”
“That’s the plan. There’s a freight warehouse at Jiangshi Station—we’ll check it out tomorrow, and that should get us out of the city.”
Lin Xian had another goal: he wanted to see if he could find an electric locomotive at Jiangshi Station.
The industrial infrastructure of this era was mostly electrified, but electric locomotives carry no prime mover—they rely on current from overhead lines for power, driven by traction motors. Once the railway grid fails, these mechanical beasts are stranded on the tracks and nearly worthless.
Of course, to ordinary people, they’re worthless. But to Lin Xian, they’re different.
Lin Xian had previously imagined attaching an electric locomotive as a backup power generator: when he used his ability to propel the train, the locomotive could convert kinetic energy into electricity and store it. Even with only 30–40% recovery efficiency, if it could keep the train running during his rest periods and supply power to the rest of the car, it would essentially create a brief “infinite energy” cycle.
Jiangshi Station itself was a major terminal; if he could find one, it would save him considerable effort later.
“Have you eaten?”
Lin Xian looked at Chen Sixuan and saw how haggard she looked. Though she’d finally eaten something today and regained some strength, she’d struggled in darkness for over two months—her spirit was already on the brink of collapse.
This afternoon, she’d witnessed Director Liang’s gruesome death and been attacked by a monster; now that she’d relaxed, she was mentally dazed.
“I…”
When Chen Sixuan heard Lin Xian’s question, she spoke in a humble tone: “I just sorted through the water and food. Roughly speaking, if we eat once a day, we can last about a month.”
She felt a twinge of guilt as she said this—she’d included both herself and Lin Xian in the “one meal a day” category, though Lin Xian had never told her she was allowed to eat as much as he did.
Lin Xian’s eyes flickered as he looked toward Car 1. Chen Sixuan had already laid out the bed and sofa, arranging pillows and blankets neatly.
Aside from the TV, which she didn’t know how to install, and the steel bed frame, still unwelded, Car 1 had transformed from a vagrant’s den into a cozy one-room space—giving both of them, worn down by months of apocalypse-fueled fear, the urge to lie down and sleep properly.
Lin Xian walked over, took a fruit can from the storage rack, and handed it to Chen Sixuan.
“Eat. Then sleep.”
“Huh?!”
Chen Sixuan gasped in surprise, staring at the can in his hand—her eyes held both longing and sudden realization.
The sweet fruit can instantly awakened her appetite, but the words “sleep” made her mind wander. “Th…thank you.”
She obediently took it, sat on the sofa, and opened the can, taking a sip.
It was unbearably sweet—her entire body seemed to cry out in delight.
In that moment, Chen Sixuan felt dizzy, her consciousness drifting. She ate the fruit in large bites, silently murmuring to herself.
So sweet. So delicious. So much want to sleep.
Ah…what did it matter if she was a student or he was a teacher? In this world, he was just a man, and she was just a woman.
And he was an adept, he’d saved her life—her life was his now. What difference did it make? Let him do whatever he wanted.
This thought echoed like a demon’s whisper in her ears, sending chills down her spine. Unconsciously, she pressed her thighs together, feeling a strange liberation after abandoning her moral compass.
Soon, she finished the entire can. Then she stood up, walked halfway, remembered something, turned back, pulled a small object from her backpack, clenched it in her hand, and silently sat on the edge of the bed.
Lin Xian was in Car 3, using his ability to repair the damaged hydraulic tailboard. When he returned to Car 1 and saw Chen Sixuan sitting with her head bowed, his brow furrowed.
!
“What are you sitting there for? Go to sleep. You’ll take the first watch later.”
At these words, Chen Sixuan looked up in surprise, her eyes flickering with complex emotion. She hastily replied, “Oh, okay.”
As soon as she spoke, shame and irritation flooded her. She quickly rose, walked to the sofa, kicked off her shoes, and lay down, slipping the small object back into her bag.
Lin Xian picked up a bottle of water. He’d clearly noticed her awkwardness, but he wasn’t at the point of letting lust cloud his judgment. That white monstrosity might still be out there—this was a matter of life and death. Only an idiot would be thinking about his crotch right now.
Lin Xian now entered Car 2 and saw the mysterious girl still asleep. He found it strange.
Logically, she’d been sleeping too long—nearly twenty hours since last night. Was she truly asleep, or pretending?
Thinking this, Lin Xian frowned and leaned close to the girl, pinching her soft cheek.
“Hey, keep pretending to sleep and I’ll dump you on the street.”
“Wake up!”
“I’m taking off your pants!”
“Wow, pink…”
But the girl remained peacefully asleep, her face serene, long lashes fluttering slightly—leaving Lin Xian feeling utterly powerless.
If not for the mysterious unknown ability she possessed, he wouldn’t have bothered saving her. If she were merely a burden, that’d be fine—but who knew if she’d help him or threaten him once awake?
Night brought a sharp drop in temperature. He sighed helplessly, carried the girl to Car 1, where Chen Sixuan was already deeply asleep. He placed the girl on the sofa and covered both women with two fresh, thick blankets.
“Hmm, keeping a whole train full of beauties isn’t bad.”
Looking at the two sleeping women—one exquisitely beautiful with a gentle aura, the other petite and charming, a budding beauty—Lin Xian felt an unexpected, decadent sense of accomplishment.
